The new Maserati MC20 supercar – the brand’s first since the MC12 – has been pictured in public for the first time disguised in a full-body camouflage wrap.

Few details can be drawn from the official images – shot underneath the L.O.V.E. statue in Milan – although the car’s aggressive profile and elements of the aero package are clearly visible.

The Italian marque says the car will now undergo a period of development on both road and track, with plans to release more images from locations “symbolic of Italian audacity”.

The supercar will make its global debut in May. No further information has been revealed about the Maserati MC20, which stands for Maserati Corse ('race' in Italian) and 2020, other than to say that the famous Italian brand will use the MC20 to "return to the world of racing”.

2021 Maserati MC20 to Be Powered by All-Italian Twin-Turbo V-6

The upcoming MC20 will be a mid-engine reminder that Maserati exists. Rather than a successor to the ultrarare, hyperexpensive MC12, the MC20 is a run-of-the-mill six-figure Italian sports car offered in both coupe and convertible forms. Maserati promises that the MC20 marks the start of a new phase in the brand's history, which it desperately needs if its vehicles are going to be relevant again.

MC20 mules appear to take cues from the Alfa Romeo 4C, which makes sense, as this Maserati could help amortize FCA's development costs for that Alfa's carbon-fiber tub. The first MC20s will use a new twin-turbo V-6 rumored to make more than 600 horsepower, with torque routed through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. We expect a hybrid eventually, and Maserati says a battery-electric version will come in time.

Maserati originally planned to reveal the MC20 in May, but has postponed the unveiling until September due to the coronavirus pandemic. The cabrio should follow in 2021. We estimate prices will begin around $160,000.

2021 Maserati MC20 officially unveiled: Mid-engined supercar to revive brand

The 2021 Maserati MC20 supercar has been launched overnight, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Italian sports luxury car maker.

The two-seated Maserati features a mid-mounted 463kW/730Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 – the first engine to be developed and manufactured by the company in two decades. Previously, engines were built for the brand by Ferrari.

Fitted with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, the 90-degree V6 propels the car from zero to 100km/h in a claimed 2.9 seconds.

Drive is through the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential, with an optional electronic diff available.

To complete the supercar experience, the Maserati MC20 features 'butterfly' doors.

The 20-inch wheels hide 380mm ventilated discs and six-piston Brembo callipers at the front, and 350mm ventilated discs with four-piston callipers at the back.
Buyers can also option carbon brakes to improve stopping performance.

Inside, the basic interior uses a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10-inch infotainment with Alexa smart assist. Carbon-fibre, leather, and alcantara feature throughout, and the driver can select from four driving modes.

Maserati says a fully-electric version of the MC20 is coming in the future, offering an even quicker 0-100km/h time and a driving range of 325 kilometres (based on the WLTP test).

With the use of carbon-fibre, Maserati says the MC20 weighs 1500 kilograms.

Taking just two years to develop, the supercar was designed from the outset to be offered in a cabriolet body, which is expected to be released in 2021.

The MC20 marks the start of a new chapter for Maserati, with the Italian car company announcing a total of ten new models before the end of 2023.

A new, mid-size SUV is coming in early 2021 to compliment the larger Levante SUV. Maserati's social media has also promised a new Gran Tursimo coupe, expected after the MC20 cabrio has been revealed.

In 2022, an all-new Maserati Quattroporte will be announced, followed by an all-new Levante SUV in 2023.

The brand's revival is crucial to the success of the upcoming merger between Fiat-Chryler Group – owner of Maserati – and the Peugeot Group. The new parent company will be known as Stellantis.

Pricing has not been announced at this stage, but the 2021 Maserati MC20 is expected to compete against the Lamborghini Huracan and the upcoming V6 hybrid baby supercar from Ferrari.

Maserati has shared some images of MC20 Convertible Prototype. The camouflage it wears is based on cloud pattern, apt for a convertible.

MC20's body is made of carbon fibre and composite materials in its entirety, which Maserati found to be an identical solution for all the configurations to come: coupé, convertible and, in the future, electric.
