Maruti labour unrest spreads to Suzuki units - The Economic Times [frustration]

NEW DELHI: The ongoing labour unrest at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar facility spread to three companies of Suzuki Motors in India on Wednesday, with
more than 4,000 workers going on a flash strike in support of their colleagues at the country's largest car maker.

The protests stalled production at engine units of Suzuki Powertrain India and Suzuki Castings in Manesar and two-wheeler unit of Suzuki Motorcycle India in Gurgaon from Wednesday afternoon.

"All the workers of different shifts at these three companies have gone on strike since this afternoon in support of MSI's ( Maruti Suzuki India) Manesar plant workers," Suzuki Powertrain India Employees Union President Sube Singh Yadav said.

Though the immediate trigger for protests was not known, union leaders said that remarks of Maruti Chairman Osamu Suzuki, that the management will not accept any indiscipline, has sparked a strong reaction among the staff. Also, the company's decision to sack five more workers in Manesar on Tuesday on disciplinary grounds and hiring of 100 staff to replace the existing workforce has led to resentment.

The workers have asked Maruti management to end the 16-day standoff with Manesar workers, who have so far refused to sign a good conduct bond that the management has set as a prerequisite for entering the factory premises.

"The company is being run by workers and Maruti produced around 13 lakh cars in FY11, which is 30% more than its installed capacity of 10 lakh. Driven by workers initiatives, the company managed to reach its historically high production, but now they are subject to extreme adverse conditions just because they are demanding their basic rights," said Sonu Gujjar, president of workers body of Maruti's car assembly plant in Manesar.

Suzuki, the sixth largest Japanese carmaker with 54.4% in Maruti, is facing a possible shutdown of its main plant in India. The Gurgaon facility makes some of its top selling vehicles such as Alto, WagonR and Eeco and employs nearly 4,500 staff.

The abrupt stoppage of production at Manesar, which makes critical diesel engines, may soon impact production of diesel variants of Ritz and Dzire cars made at Gurgaon plants.

"Maruti may be heading for a major disaster if the diesel engine plant of Suzuki Powertrain stops production. Diesel cars are in high demand and this will hit sales, which has seen sharp decline in past quarter," said an auto analyst. Suzuki employs about 2,500 workers at its Manesar plant, while the two-wheeler facility that rolls out 1,200 motorcycles and scooters every day, has 1,400 workers at its plant in Gurgaon.

current news is that there were some hand fight between some of the employees and company personal and again work is at hault. Also some of the young employees went to the extent of cutting out the cables, loosing out hinges of doors and their handles, denting some of the body parts which was why company took some hard actions.Lets hope this all gets solves and work starts resuming soon or else more to more waitlist for all maruti models for sure.
With the capacity of 1200 units daily, company could only produce complete 95 models with the reason of these few employees mischieves.

Hi, MSIL has rolled out 700 swifts from manesar despite 27th day of strike.

“Maruti Suzuki today produced 700 Swift cars from Manesar and Gurgaon plants, combined,” Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said in a statement.

“Focussed efforts to augment manpower strength at Manesar plants and starting production of Swift model at Gurgaon plant also have helped the company to reach this level of monthly production for the model,” it said.

This is a problem of supply and demand of labour. If a company can take the services of a labour @5000-6000 per month then why will it pay for a permanent labour @ 18000 per month. Even in govt. sector, it is happening now a days. Many works at lower levels (peon, data entry operators) are being done through hired persons whose remunerations are almost 20-25 per cent of a regular employee. If there are people ready to work like a machine for 8-9 hours for Rs. 6000, then there is not much anybody can do. First thing is whether company is paying its workers less than minimum wages presribed by law? This does not seem to be the case as nobody has pointed this out.

Regarding very strict work conditions in the factory like just 30 minutes for lunch and just 7 min. for a short break, the company must have some relaxation but agitating for this and more seriously damaging the new cars is just unacceptable. If one can not work like a machine, just leave it.

Leave it and go where?
If All manufacturers in India behave similarly ,Should people leave India?

They are not rich corporate honchos. They earn daily bread from these kind of regular job and proper reward is their Right.
Even today we have not gotten any clear picture of the root cause of trouble. neither through media nor through any other proper source.
I believe it is been suppressed.

The strike is back.

The Hindu : News / National : Workers

This time, the workers have clearly refused to honour the agreement signed by them with Maruti some days back. The company alleged that its staff were beaten by the striking workers. Workers are demanding reinstatement of suspended workers. Seems that problem has now reached to a very serious level. Waiting for new swift is going to be more painful.[frustration]

Now comes the big question. Will the swifts that will hit the roads in the next 2-3 months be of proper quality? What if they do some gimmick in the actual quality which would pass the quality inspection?

I'm so glad that Maruti is on a downhill slide and i hope the company suffers loss of image and business. I will never forget the humiliating experience i went through as a customer at the Khivraj Motors service station in Chennai and i have vowed never to purchase a Maruti product ever again. Damn Maruti and it's associates.
