Mahindra teases 5 New Electric SUVs - Global debut on 15th Aug 2022

mahindra-electric-suv-new-teaser-xuv900-launch-price.jpg

Mahindra had revealed some time back that it planned to make a major announcement on its new range of ‘Born Electric’ SUVs on August 15, 2022. The carmaker has now shared a teaser previewing five new electric SUVs that will make their debut on said date. Mahindra had previously said that it planned to have up to 5 electric SUVs on sale in the country by 2027 four of which would be from the born electric range. Mahindra has however said that it will debut the new XUV400 EV in September meaning that one of the concept could be a design study for a future EV.

Mahindra previewed the concepts in profile with the first image likely previewing a compact SUV with sleek proportions and a flowing profile ending at the base of a sharply raked rear glass. The overall profile comes across as one belonging to a modern crossover.

The second concept likely previews a mid-size SUV with a more traditional SUV stance. Prominent design elements visible include a flattish and upright front, mildly tapering roofline and an upright tailgate. The third also seemingly previews a compact SUV but with a more upright roof and a lesser degree of taper at the rear pillar.

The fourth SUV previewed is a full-blown SUV-coupe with the roofline smoothly flowing from the a-pillar right to the trailing edge of the vehicle. A light element seems to sit where the tapered rear pillar meets the trailing edge of the SUV. The front meanwhile features an upright nose.

The fifth SUV in profile appears to be the sportiest of the lot with an even sleeker profile and a fastback like design. Compared to the other SUV-coupe concept, the nose is different – similar to the second and third concepts while the roof line too is much flatter.

Mahindra XUV700’s electric variants – XUV.e8 and XUV.e9 in official video

Mahindra officially unveiled the electric variants based on the highly popular XUV700. Mahindra unveiled five new electric cars – XUV.e8, XUV.e9, BE.05, BE.07, and BE.09. While the BE range is still far away, the XUV range of electric cars will arrive in the Indian market in 2024. Mahindra has detailed the two cars from the XUV electric range in this official video. Here are the details.

Mahindra XUV.e8 EV

This will be the first electric SUV from the brand to go into production. It will arrive in the Indian market in December 2024. The new car will be based on the INGLO platform, which is a Mahindra Born Electric modular platform and will underpin a lot of upcoming electric cars from the brand.

Mahindra XUV.e9 EV

The new XUV.e9 electric SUV will come to the market in 2025. The design of the XUV.e9 draws inspiration from the XUV Aero Concept. The coupe-like design of the XUV.e9 makes it even longer than the XUV.e8. It is a five-seater version and gets an extremely long wheelbase of 2,775mm.

Mahindra XUV.e8 design patent & launch details leaked

mahindra-xuv.e8-prototype.jpg

Like many of its rivals, Mahindra has also been developing electric cars, and they already have the XUV400 in the market. In addition to this, Mahindra is also working on a new range of Born Electric SUVs, some of which have already been showcased as concepts. The XUV.e8, an electric version of the XUV700, was also showcased last year. An image has now leaked online, revealing the design patent of the production version of the XUV.e8 SUV.

mahindra-xuv.e8-xuv700-based-electric-suv.jpg

The leaked images clearly depict how the production version of the EV will look. What is even more exciting is that the patent images reveal that the production version closely resembles the concept that the manufacturer showcased last year, with the only notable difference being the paint job. The Mahindra XUV.e8 features a unique and futuristic-looking front fascia, including an LED bar that runs along the width of the car.

This LED DRL drops down vertically to the bumper. Like other EVs in the market, the e8 will also have a completely closed front grille. The leaked image shows a bronze finished Mahindra logo and bronze highlights around the headlamp area. The headlamps are likely projector LED units and differ from those on the XUV700. The lights are vertically stacked, one over the other.

The bumper of the XUV.e8 has a clean look, with just a skid plate featuring bronze accents at the bottom. The front fascia is a major highlight of this electric SUV. Moving to the side profile, the design of the SUV will remind you of the XUV700. The flush fitting door handles, door panels, window, and roof design all bear similarities to the XUV700.

Although the SUV’s design may appear similar to the XUV700, it’s worth noting that the XUV.e8 and other future EVs from Mahindra are based on a new platform. Mahindra’s born-electric INGLO skateboard platform has been specifically developed for electric vehicles.

In terms of dimensions, the XUV.e8 will measure 4,740mm in length, 1,900mm in width, and 1,760mm in height. The upcoming EV will have a wheelbase of 2,762mm, which is 45mm longer, 10mm wider, and 5mm taller than the XUV700. Mahindra has also previously confirmed that they will offer an AWD system, and the battery pack range will be 80 kWh.

The upcoming electric SUV is expected to generate anywhere between 230 Ps and 350 Ps. Apart from the XUV.e8, Mahindra is also working on other electric SUVs such as the XUV.e9 and BE.05. It is possible that Mahindra might not offer a different design for the other EVs that are currently under testing. The XUV.e8 will be the first product to be launched in the market and is expected to be available sometime towards the end of 2024. Mahindra will also launch the 5-door Thar in the market next year.

Mahindra BORN Electric will be powered by BYD Blade batteries, replacing VW Battery cells

Mahindra-BORN-Electric-will-be-powered-by-BYD-Blade-Batteries.png

India’s giant automotive manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra is expecting its quarter of the SUVs to be electric by 2027. Bringing alive the sport in electric SUVs, Mahindra unveiled two new brands, to house the company’s EV portfolio – Iconic brand XUV and the all-new electric-only brand called BE. The indication of these two brands has been showcased via five e-SUVs: the XUV.e8, XUV.e9, BE.05, BE.07, and BE.09 last year on 15th of August. The first four of these are to be launched between 2024 and 2026.

Some reports say, M&M partners with BYD and Farasis to meet the battery requirements for its upcoming electric SUVs. BYD, a Chinese automotive and battery manufacturer will supply 60 kWh and 80 kWh batteries for BE models. And Farasis to 32 kWh to 40 kWh batteries for the XUV400.

Earlier, Volkswagen and Mahindra had signed to equip these SUVs with Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive kit (MEB) components like electric motors, battery cells, and system components. But due to delays on VW’s part, BYD is to supply the battery of the specified capacity. BYD’s blade battery is expected to be safer and has higher energy density.

The Blade Battery also passed other extreme test conditions, such as being crushed, bent, being heated in a furnace to 300°C and overcharged by 260%. None of these resulted in a fire or explosion.

Mahindra is building these SUVs on its INGLO Platform (Indian at heart and global in its reach) which offers class-leading safety standards (5-star NCAP rating), exhilarating performance, excellent range and efficiency, exemplary driving dynamics. The battery pack of these SUVs will be in range of 60-80 kWh capacity of LFP based Li-ion battery, and support a 175 kW fast-charger that can charge up to 80% in less than 30 minutes. With 5 Radars-1 Vision ADAS architecture, INGLO is futureproofed up to level-2 autonomy.
