To cost around Rs 50,000 less than current base Micra. April 2013 launch.

Nissan, in its quest to strengthen its position in the small car market, is developing a stripped down version of the petrol Micra. Currently, the prices for the Micra start at Rs 4.21 lakh for the base XE variant and the stripped down version (internal code G02A) is expected to cost around Rs 50,000 less.

The Micra, in its petrol guise, is currently available in three variants. The base XE variant comes with body-coloured bumpers, tilt steering, an engine immobiliser and a driver airbag. To help cut costs, Nissan may opt to leave out features like the driver airbag, steering tilt-adjust and digital clock that are currently available in the base XE variant. Also, the adjustable head rests for the front seats will be replaced with the cheaper, fixed-type design which we have seen on cars like the Etios

The sub-4 lakh Micra will help Nissan compete against the likes of the Hyundai i10, which is available at Rs 3.65 lakh. (All prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). The Nissan Micra G02A which is expected to go an sale by April 2013 should boost Micra volumes (currently hovering around an average of 1500 units a month) considerably.

SCOOP! Nissan readying low-cost Micra

The Nissan Micra was launched in the Indian market in 2010 and the company is now planning a lower cost variant (code:G02A) which is expected in March this year.

The car was spotted on the outskirts of Chennai with taped tail-lamps. As seen in the photographs, taken by Gautam, one of our readers, the updated Micra could get a new tail-lamp cluster. However, the rear bumper and wheel cap designs look similar to the current car and are unlikely to be changed. The interiors however, will see some changes owing to cost cutting efforts by the carmaker. The adjustable front headrests will to be replaced by a cheaper single piece design that is integrated with the seat. Nissan plans to delete some other features as well. The current Micra is priced at Rs 4.23 lakh for the base petrol and Rs 5.98 lakh for the base diesel variant (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Low cost Nissan Micra is back on track with facelift.

Nissan Micra now comes with facelift. Found test drive in Chennai. We earlier reported that the low cost Nissan Micra codenamed GO2A has been put on the back burner for the time being.

We now hear that the bare bones edition of the car is back on track and the testing is nearing its final phase. Here, one of our readers spotted Nissan’s latest experiment being tested in Chennai. This is probably the first time we get a clear look at the car’s front.

The test mule has a slightly different front fascia. The headlight elements have been re-profiled. The front grill loses the chrome strip and now has a honeycomb mesh. The bumper and the secondary airdam are completely new. Understandably, there is no provision for the fog lights. The rest of the car remains the same.

Our reader reports that there wasn’t black smoke or diesel clatter when the driver attempted to pull off swiftly at a traffic signal.

This is consistent with our previous claim that the low cost version of the Micra will be available only with the petrol engine. The 1.2-liter three cylinder develops 76 bhp and comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

The car has undergone some aggressive cost cutting which will likely see the deletion of the driver airbag as a standard feature. It will also have a steering system which is locally made as the steering system of the Micra is currently imported.

Other measures taken to bring the cost down include skimping on the NVH package, revising the material quality and numerous, minor cost cutting exercises, most of which cannot be seen physically.

The low cost Nissan Micra could be significantly cheaper than the current version, so much so that it will slide a whole segment below. Meanwhile, the current Micra will be updated with a comprehensive refresh.

The low cost Micra should be out by the end of the year but the 1.5-liter diesel engine option may be added only next year.

So the Nissan Micra gets three types of facelifts: This mildly updated low cost version, the international facelift and the facelifted version that was spotted in India.
