Italian scooter brand Lambretta, which was once the trusted choice for families and businessmen, is all set to make a comeback to India in a bigger and cleaner avatar in partnership with Bird Mobility.

Worth mentioning hare is that the the sturdy and bulky scooter was also featured in many Hollywood and Bollywood movies of the time. Plus, along with Bajaj and Vespa, it had made deep inroads into the country.

In an exclusive interview with ET, Walter Scheffrahn, owner of Innocenti SA, which owns the Lambretta brand globally, said that the group will infuse more than $200 million in India in the next five years with the Bird Group to capture the market.

Innocenti SA will unveil a wide range of high-powered scooters—G, V and X models with capacities between 200 cc and 350 cc, and it will eventually bring an electric scooter in 2024.

“The brand has its soul in India and it has tremendous affinity amongst the masses. We want to recreate the magic of the past. We aim to make it a Ferrari of scooters in India with our top-end range,” Scheffrahn told the business daily.

More importantly, the company has plans to have local production, which would also focus on exports across the world, including home market Italy.

It is important to mention in this context that the scooters will be high-end and its most accessible product, as well, likely to be at a premium of nearly 20 per cent over the most expensive scooters. The joint venture entity will be 51 per cent owned by Lambretta, and the remaining 49 per cent by Bird Group.

Last year, Lambretta sold approximately 100,000 units globally, and the entry into India could potentially more than double the brand’s footprint, the financial daily cited Scheffrahn as saying.

At present, the Lambretta is sold in about 70 countries, with manufacturing units in Europe and South East Asia. The manufacturing unit in India is likely to be its biggest. Also, the manufacturing facility with a capacity of 100,000 units to be set up at Manesar may come on stream at the beginning of 2024.
