Spied – KTM Duke 390 caught testing in Pune

The KTM Duke 390 is the motorcycle that biking enthusiasts are waiting for with a bated breath.

The naked sportsbike has won accolades from the international media for its performance. The Duke 390′s 373.2cc single cylinder fuel injected engine packs in a punchy 43 bhp, which is massive by Indian compact sportsbike standards. The good news is that the engine is frugal enough to return around 35 kmpl.

Add to that a lightweight chassis and a six-speed gear box, the Duke 390 easily sets the performance benchmark. Here is a spyshot of the KTM Duke 390 which was spotted testing near Akurdi, Pune, by one of our readers.

As you can see from the spyshot, the Duke 390 would easily pass as a Duke 200 for an untrained eye. The differences are that the 390 gets new body decals, Metzler rubbers and comes fitted with ABS brakes.

The motorcycle will be made at Bajaj’s Chakan plant near Pune for both the domestic and international markets. Heavy localization will enable KTM to price the bike competitively and we expect the price tag to be in the vicinity of Rs. 2 lakhs.

The Duke 200 has managed to garner a wide fan base in India for its sprightly performance and affordability. The Duke 390 is expected to stretch the envelope even further.

KTM has announced that the Duke 390 will be launched in mid-2013 which means it is approaching the launch date very fast.

Bajaj Auto and KTM have launched the much-awaited KTM 390 Duke at an attractive price tag of Rs 1,80,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi). This streetbike is sure to thrill many Indian enthusiasts. The aggressive looking 390 screams KTM thanks to minimalistic body work and exposed bright orange trellis frame.

The compact but comprehensive digital instruments show speed, fuel level, an odometer, trip meters and a tachometer. The 390 Duke is equipped with top class, Bajaj-typical illuminated switchgear, dimpled palm grips, a comfortable set of levers and good mirrors. The 10.2-litre fuel tank offers deeply recessed, appropriate thigh support. A side stand-down warning light is standard. Overall quality and fit and finish is good, as expected.

This tech-laden motorcycle deploys a four-stroke and single-cylinder, 373.2cc engine. The 390 Duke also offers fuel-injection, liquid-cooling and a twin camshaft driven quartet of valves.

The KTM 390 Duke's near-400cc engine outputs maximum power of 43bhp at 9500rpm and peak torque of 3.57kgm at 7250rpm. This big Duke gets a six-speed gearbox that shifts in a one-down five-up pattern. In India, the 390 shall use a larger radiator.

The 390 Duke deploys a rigid, steel trellis frame and chunky 43mm diameter front upside down forks developed by suspension specialist WP, and at rear a cast alloy swingarm supporting a monoshock. The suspension setup will be slightly tweaked on the Indian spec bike keeping harsh Indian road conditions in mind. The 390 Duke uses an ABS enabled 300mm single disc brake in front and 230mm unit at rear, a radial mounted, four piston caliper biting the front, and both controlled by steel-braided hydraulic lines.

The riding position is upright, comfortable and good for daily use and the wide handlebars provide good leverage. The KTM 390 Duke handles with a light, nimble feel, always steering with neutral manners. Its tubeless Metzeler radial front and rear tyres provide terrific grip.

Just one more thing, the service network ?

Can Bajaj authorized service center can do it ?
After reading jalex's thread, the KTM dealerships do seem keen to address customer complaints. Hope it doesn't get worse from here.

OT: Tried sending you a PM but there seems to be something wrong with your account.

@maximas007: The pricing is good indeed as compared to other motorcycles in the same price bracket. Personally, I would still not put down my money on a fuel injected motorcycle sold in India for a few more years. But I must say the price to performance ratio of this motorcycle is unbeatable.

Ask Dilip sir directly about his views now that he is on the forum, no?[:)]

KTM Duke 390 deliveries stay on course despite worker strike

The KTM Duke 390 made a storming entry into the Indian compact sportsbike segment with a mouth watering introductory price tag of Rs. 1.8 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi). Like it or not, it redefined the term value for money!

The surprisingly low pricing resulted in long queues at dealerships but then Bajaj’s Chakan plant where KTM bikes are built suffered a workers’ strike. The strike reduced the output of the plant, threatening to increase the waiting period of the Duke 390.

With only a limited workforce at disposal, Bajaj has shifted a portion of the production of Pulsars to its Waluj plant so as to enable continued production of the Duke 390. The output has reduced but the production thankfully has not seized.

Autocar India reports that despite the worker strike, Bajaj is confident of delivering the Duke 390 to its customers well within the announced waiting period of 90 days. Once the strike is withdrawn, the waiting period will be reduced further.

The Chakan plant builds the Duke 200 and 390 for domestic consumption and for the international markets. Given that the Duke 390 has interested international bikers, it’s imperative for Bajaj to resolve the issue at the earliest and resume normal production.
