FireShot Capture 401 - Kia Clavis trademark filed, Hyundai Exter based micro SUV launch on c_ ...png

Sources have confirmed that Kia's upcoming compact SUV, which is due by late 2024, will be called the Clavis. What's also confirmed is that the new SUV, internally codenamed as Kia AY, will be a high-riding vehicle that's under four metres in length.
  1. Multiple powertrains will be on offer
  2. Expected to go on sale in early 2025
Sources tell us that the made-for-India Kia Clavis will see a global debut by the end of 2024 and have multiple powertrain options, including electric, but the internal combustion models are expected to go on sale before the EV. Hybrid options are also expected to be offered.

The Kia Clavis EV will be based on the internal combustion platform modified for EV. Sources tell us that Kia India plans to produce close to 1 lakh units of the AY SUV annually with 80 percent volumes coming from the internal combustion engine-equipped range, with EVs accounting for the remaining. Some of this will also be earmarked for exports.

The Clavis will slot between the Sonet and Seltos in Kia's India line-up, and, to distinguish it from the Sonet, the manufacturer will position it as a lifestyle vehicle with a tougher SUV-like presence and a boxier design. However, it will not get any 4WD tech.

The Clavis is likely to be one of the last major debuts for Kia India for 2024. Other models lined up for India next year include the born EV EV9 flagship and the new Carnival MPV.

Kia Syros to get 1.0 turbo-petrol, 1.5 diesel engines

Kia India is all set to reveal the Syros, its all-new compact SUV on December 19. Ahead of its global debut, we can confirm that the Syros will go on sale in January with not one but two engine options.

While most carmakers are shying away from introducing new diesel-powered models, Kia India seems to be bucking the trend by launching its fifth product in India with the diesel engine. The Syros will come with the tried and tested 1.5-litre diesel engine that powers many Kia and Hyundai models in the country. This engine delivers 115hp and 250Nm of torque and sees duty in the Sonet, Venue, Seltos, Carens, Creta and the Alcazar in our market. As for gearbox options, the Syros diesel will come with a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque convertor automatic just like the one seen on the Sonet.

The Syros will also come with a 1.0-liter turbo petrol unit good for 120 hp and 172Nm. It will come with a manual as well as a 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox. However, the Syros will not get the naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine that's available on the Sonet. This may result in a relatively high starting price, but that's also in keeping with the Syros' more premium positioning over the Sonet.

The Kia Syros will see a global debut on December 19. Sources tell us that a price announcement could take place in January, likely at the Bharat Mobility Show where the SUV will be shown for the first time to the general public. Expect Kia to start delivering the Syros to customers by late January or early February next year.
