The facelifted version of the Jeep Compass has finally made its global premiere and it will likely be introduced in India later this year or in early 2021 with a host of changes. The most important of the updates is undoubtedly the debut of a new 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine standing in place of the bigger 1.4-litre powertrain.

It will be made available in two different states of tune. Both 128 horsepower version and the 148 horsepower specification will have a torque output of 270 Nm. The former will be paired with a six-speed manual while the latter is connected to a seven-speed dual dry clutch automatic transmission sending power to the front wheels.

In Europe, the 2021 Jeep Compass can be had with a 1.6-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel engine with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and is capable of developing 118 horsepower and 320 Nm. It is hooked with a six-speed manual driving the front axle. In the international markets, more variants will be sold as Compass PHEV (4xe) uses a 1.3-litre petrol unit working in tandem with an electric motor.

New alloy wheel design and exterior colour schemes are also part of the package for Europe. The interior has also been refreshed with latest Uconnect 5 technology and customers will have the option to choose either a seven-inch or an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa.

The Jeep Compass arrived in the Indian market back in 2017 and finally after three years it's getting a significant mid-life update. It is the company's most affordable SUV in our market and Jeep India has been making frequent upgrades in its line-up over the course of time. The 2021 Jeep Compass facelift has been unveiled today and it is quite similar to the one that was unveiled at the 2020 Guangzhou Auto Show. So while there are very subtle updates in its looks, it has received some substantial upgrades in the features department.

The new and bigger 10.1-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system is highly customisable and is the biggest update in the features department, while there is also a new 10-inch inch HD instrument cluster display. It is based on FCA's new Uconnect 5 technology that has an android based operating system. So it now gets connected car features along with voice command assist and over-the-air (OTA) updates and will continue to offer features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto among others. As before, the new Jeep Compass will be equipped with seven-airbags, antilock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and a host of electronics including electronic stability program (ESP), brake assist (BA), terrain modes, hill assist (HA) and hill descent control (HDC) among others.

I am regularly spotting a white coloured red numberplate Compass doing rounds in Chennai OMR area. What would that be testing for? The car is going thru paces and its really going pretty quick. Saw there were around 3-5 masked men (no not in sinister types) but they seems be Jeep Employees with Laptops peering on the car performance. But that is an undertest compass doing in Chennai?
