Is China's BYD AUTO the next Hyundai in the making?

A decade ago when an unknown auto brand called Hyundai started expanding their presence in international market, it was perceived as a cheap Korean car with not a strong mechanical backbone. Now let's turn to the current age and Hyundai is a very strong power house with sales increasing very sharply in most of it's market, now it's known as a company which churns out a pure VFM products. most of the american auto companies are threatened by Hyundai's latest success in the US market.

Now coming to the heart of this topic.

China is the The largest market for cars in the world, So How many of us have heard of a auto company in china called BYD(Build your dreams)
I know the name sound's very cheesy.

Let me take you through the company:

History:

BYD Co Ltd created the wholly owned subsidiary BYD Auto a year after its 2002 acquisition of the Qinchuan Automobile Company. This purchase may have been made solely to acquire the passenger car production license held by the purchased company. While the Chinese state is credited with development of an indigenous auto industry,BYD Auto may have been created in the absence of a State policy explicitly supporting independently owned automobile manufacturers.
In 2008 BYD Auto began selling its first mass-produced, full hybrid vehicle, the BYD F3DM.China subsidizes oil (an incentive for the State to encourage use and manufacture of electric cars), and Chinese automakers see opportunities in less mature electric vehicles because Western companies have yet to develop much of a lead in the technology. In late December 2008 Warren Buffet spent $230 million buying up a 10% stake in BYD Auto's parent, BYD Company. In 2009 the company sold 448,400 cars in China, and two-thirds of sales were its BYD F3 model. That same year saw BYD exports its cars to Africa, South America and the Middle East.
A future joint venture with Daimler AG, Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology Company, will focus on EV development and upmarket, BYD-branded sedans. As of March 2011 the new company has received a business license from the Chinese State and BYD, contractual agreement from its German partner.

Copying claims

BYD, like many other private Chinese car manufacturers, has been accused of copying its vehicle designs from other companies. A staff member at Honda claimed that the BYD F3 was "a known copy" of the Toyota Corolla (with Honda Fit design cue, the BYD F1, has been described as "a clear copy" this time of the Toyota Aygo.
Domestic dealerships have been known to take advantage of this and replace the badging of BYD vehicles with those of other car manufacturers including Toyota. Micheal Austin, vice president of BYD America, has acknowledged the issue saying that the practices of some franchised dealers have made BYD "uncomfortable".

Sales outside China

While the majority of sales are domestic, some models are exported to other developing countries: BYD cars are sold in Bahrain by Fakhro Motors, BYDs are distributed in the Dominican Republic by Peravia Motors (3,000 cars serve as taxis in the capital, Santo Domingo), a Russian company, TagAZ, assembles BYD models in Russia, and BYDs are offered in Ukraine as well as Moldova.
The company has also expressed a desire to enter the European and Israeli markets and hopes to sell vehicles in the United States, too.Its US headquarters is set to be located in LA and BYD plans to start selling an electric car, the e6, there in 2012.

Today when i was browsing through some of the chinese website's i came across the launch event of the BYD's latest baby.

BYD’s new compact sedan came down the production lines in their Changsha factory yesterday. The production launch of this sedan comes at a critical time for BYD as they move from being well known for their cheap cloned cars, into a company capable of developing high end technology with equally high end services.
BYD’s “i-BYD” system was unveiled at long last yesterday, the much talked about system will offer drivers multiple services when it pops out of the dashboard when the drivers side door opens. The “i-BYD” robot allows drivers to remotely find their car via cellphone (a much needed feature!), allows drivers to unlock or lock their car remotely, switch on the AC from their phone or key fob and if you really want to know the latest news, the robot can read off the headlines as you drive. Think the robot is a little unsettling? Don’t worry, it also has emotions and can speak – making human-machine interaction possible.
The ’6B’ hasn’t yet been given its official name, but its likely to use the F3 Plus moniker that was bestowed upon it at the Beijing Auto Show last month. Under the hood, the 6B isn’t the BYD you know – it’s carrying a 1.5T engine capable of propelling the heavier hybrid version from 0-100kph in sub 8 seconds, this non hybrid version could well be closer to 7 seconds.
Gear swapping responsibilities are given to a six speed manual or a dual clutch gearbox, again, both developed by BYD in-house, which shows a great commitment to BYD’s technological capabilities.
BYD’s Changsha facility is going to be a major production site for the company in the next few years, the facility is already geared up to produce the BYD ’6B’ and F0 mini car but will also produce BYD’s MPV range including the M6 and also 1500 electric buses per year, total production is expected to hit 50,000 units.

Is this the sign of times changing? Do you think that the Chinese are more proactive than our Indian Auto maker's?

Please feel free to express your opinion.

Re: Is China’s BYD Auto Next Hyundai in Making?

This surely is not a good news for an Emerging Automaker.

Three people are dead after a Nissan GT-R sports car collided with a BYD e6 electric taxi and proceeded to burst into flames. Shenzhen police have said that the driver of the Nissan GT-R was heavily intoxicated and possibly drag racing. Witnesses claim that the Nissan GT-R was traveling in excess of 200km/h at the time of the accident.
Early reports claim that the occupants of the GT-R were only slightly injured but the high speed impact into the e6 triggered spontaneous combustion of the electric vehicle and the death of all three of its occupants. It is not clear at this time whether the impact was the cause of their death or the subsequent fire. Though much remains to be answered, as the investigation is not yet complete, the incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of BYD’s vehicles among the public.

The best-known Chinese manufacturer of electric cars released Tuesday the details of a crash and fire that destroyed an electric taxi and killed its three occupants in southern China early Sunday morning and said any gasoline-powered car also would have been destroyed by the impact.

Chinese news media reports Monday about the fire had caused alarm on the Internet in China and in financial markets by reviving fire safety concerns about electric cars. The crash involved a car built by BYD, in which Warren Buffett bought a 10 percent stake in 2008.

The crash early Sunday involved an e6 battery-electric car that was hit from behind by a Nissan GT-R sports car. But BYD said Tuesday that a police investigation had already found the sports car was racing at a speed of at least 180 kilometers, or 112 miles, an hour when it hit the electric car from behind.

Mr. Lin said the e6 was traveling 80 kilometers an hour at the time of impact. The e6 spun across three lanes of traffic and the already damaged back end of the car slammed into a tree with such force that the tree sliced the car open from the rear bumper all the way through the rear seats, said Paul Lin, the marketing director and chief spokesman for the company.

The battery packs of the e6 are underneath the rear seats. BYD said that the authorities in Shenzhen, next to Hong Kong, had not yet handed the car over to the company’s inspectors, and neither the police nor the company had determined what caused the fire.

“We don’t know what happened — the battery pack burned or the high-voltage gear burned or the fabric was lit or maybe some other reason,” Mr. Lin said.

BYD and the local police do not know whether the three occupants died in the crash or in the fire, he said. But seat belt use is very low in China, and survival rates for high-speed crashes are also low.

Mr. Lin added that no car could have withstood the impact: “Maybe a tank, maybe a truck could survive it.”

After BYD released a statement Tuesday describing the crash, its shares rallied 5.5 percent in Hong Kong trading, closing at 16.08 Hong Kong dollars, or $2.07. The shares had slumped 5.9 percent Monday on initial reports of the fire.

The South China Morning Post, a daily newspaper in Hong Kong, reported Tuesday that propaganda officials from Guangdong Province, which includes Shenzhen, had ordered the news media in the province not to emphasize in their reporting that an electric car had been involved in the fire.

A photo of a police officer with the destroyed taxi, released by BYD Tuesday, appeared to support the company’s contention that the vehicle had hit a tree at extremely high speed, with a treelike indentation extending far into the back of the vehicle.

Tree impacts are deadly in the United States, which is why many tree-lined roads have guard rails; these rails are rare in China, and a photo of the crash site released by BYD showed a tree about 15 centimeters, or 6 inches in diameter with no sign of a guard rail.

“I drive that road every day — there’s no guard rail,” Mr. Lin said. “It is supposed to be the most beautiful road in Shenzhen; it is a seaside road.”

Mr. Lin said that after hitting the e6, the Nissan ricocheted into another car, causing that car to roll over while the sports car came to a stop on the road.

Chinese news media reported that the sports car driver was a drunken man accompanied by three women. The occupants of the sports car were not seriously hurt and the driver fled. A man later turned himself into the police to take responsibility for the accident, but the Chinese news media questioned whether he had been hired to do so, as he did not show any signs of having been in a crash.

BYD Buses to be on European roads soon

When you run a National Park in the Netherlands, green is going to be the top of your agenda when shopping for new buses for your fleet. BYD beat out international competition to become the sole supplier of electric buses to the Freisland Provincial Government who required new vehicles for their fleet.
BYD put forward a strong case for its buses with BYD coming out on top when pressed with potential commitments in meeting certain goals, the local government purchased six vehicles and also a 15 year maintenance contract. Friesland Provincial Executive Director Johannes Kramer stated, “Friesland province leads Europe in green transportation now. We will soon have a fully-electrified public transportation service with these six BYD electric buses. This is good for Schiermonnikoog, good for tourism, and great for the environment!”

Yongping Chen, the business director of BYD AUTO added, “We are honored to win the first European electric bus tender beating all other bus companies. The Friesland Province really has a understanding in preserving the environment and developing sustainable economy. We will work together with the Friesland government to make its public transport cleaner and quieter.”

The BYD electric buses are comparable to the buses now servicing Schiermonnikoog in terms of size – they are 12 meters long (40 feet). It is able to run 250 km (155 miles) on a single charge in urban conditions. The Fe battery (Iron Phosphate battery) equipped in the BYD electric bus boasts the highest safety, longest service life and most environmentally-friendly rechargeable chemistry and contains no heavy metals or toxic electrolytes. BYD electric buses are now in regular passenger service in several cities in China, Europe and North America, making it the largest electric bus manufacturer in the world. The accumulated mileage has reached over 7 million kilometers (or 4.35 million miles) achieved by the end of May 2012.

i don't think chinese vehicles may find thair route in india.

there are already many chinese vehicles here ( battery operated two wheelers, only Electrotherm is making its e-bikes here, all other are just selling chinese one) and they have not get enough success till now. may be due to its cheap build (i also own Yo bike, from ET, but its body is making noice more then a petrol engine!!)

also, here in india, there is a perticular mindset , due to that its like hot or not !!

i can give you a simple example.

tata nano - ( do i need to say anything more??)
all experts are saying that this is indeed a good car, with sufficient power, safety, FE , good AC etc etc. but still the alto clocks in five figure , where nano is improved to only four figure (that to slowly) . there is nothing negative in nano as compair to its price, but still its a typical indian mentality, due to that nano is suffering.

the same thing will happen with chineese car makers, we (indians) are already fed-up by "made in china".

so, i doubt , any chineese car company can match hyundai's graph in india.

I agree with you on certain aspects, but even Hyundai was a unknown brand a decade ago in India but look at where they stand now, all i am trying to say is that BYD has a good chance to establish themselves as a proper automaker regardless of therir origin.

First of all, hyundai is not a chinese brand.
And when they started in india, the mantality in india was not antichinese.

Also, hyundai has matched required quality as per indian requirements. I don't think any Chinese maker will be happy to match indian requirements.
GM is making a muv named 'enjoy' which is in collaboration with a chinese car maker. I have seen this car in thair halol plant. Its good but they have many issues about quality (between gm and Chinese).

New BYD F3 comes with a remote control than can actually move the car.

Cool stuff: the new BYD F3 will come with a very innovative remote control, see pic. The F3 can be remotely started (red button), remotely moved forward, backwards, and left and right. The system works only at very low speed, but we don’t know yet how low.

Perfect for situations like when your neighbor comes knocking at your door asking you to move your car a few centimeters so he can park in his favorite spot. In the old world you had to get out of the house, get in the car, start it and move. No need for all that anymore thanks to BYD! This is the new world… Just do it from your chair on your porch, while having a beer. I guess police can’t fine you for drinking when you are not actually in the car.

What a brilliant device, I suddenly start to like BYD again, very much. The legal implications must be very interesting but as far as I know China doesn’t have any law that forbids remote controlled real cars, simply because nobody ever thought it would happen. It did, and BYD will sell it. Sure some geeks will find a way to get rid of the limiter, if they do, we can start racing…

The new BYD F3 Sui Rui, successor of the BYD F3, debuted at the Beijing Auto Show in April. The F3 Su Rui, meaning ‘quick (and) sharp’, stands on a new platform and comes with a new 1.5 turbo ‘TID’ engine mated to a 6-speed DCT, an older and cheaper 1.8 will be available as well.

BYD’s F3 Plus was shown off at the Beijing Motor Show in April this year, and now its getting ready to run the production lines at BYD’s Xi’an factory. The F3 Plus is expected to launch in August this year with dealerships taking stock of the car in the middle of August. The new model highlights BYD’s change in direction over the past two years, the F3 Plus carries BYD’s flagship 1.5T engine along with their own self developed dual clutch gearbox, it also has BYD’s own ‘self driving’ system which allows the user to remotely navigate the car into tight spots from a distance of 20 meters away.
Pricing hasn’t yet been hinted at, but real world suggestions put the F3 Plus in the 90,000RMB to 150,000RMB price segment. It is also rumored that BYD may drop the F3 title come sales time, the last generation F3 may have propelled BYD to fame in 2008-2010 but it was also their undoing from 2010 to 2012, owners were quick to buy the low cost F3 but also quick to curse the low quality. BYD may just run with the Chinese name of Su Rui in China, but stick with F3 Plus for international markets.

Officially Confirmed: new BYD Su Rui can be remote-controlled

BYD has officially confirmed the new BYD Su Rui (formerly known as the BYD F3 Su Rui) will be equipped with a remote control that allows the driver to control his vehicle from the outside up to a distance of 20 meters. BYD says the system is meant to make parking in crowded places more easy. Just bloody brilliant! BYD hasn’t yet announced the maximum speed but earlier on we heard it would be limited to 5km/h. Hackers, wake up…

BYD to Test EV Buses in Denmark

With a lot of experience under their belt when it comes to all-electric city buses, with a reported 7 million kilometers (4.35 million miles) of total mileage, BYD is easily the largest and most important EV bus manufacturer in the world. Their vehicles have been operating successfully in many cities in China, Europe and North America.

Their 12 meter / 40 foot bus has a maximum range of 250 km (155 miles) of in-town driving, and its Iron Phosphate battery pack is reportedly one of the cleanest and greenest to manufacture in the industry. Two of their buses will now enter service in the Danish capital of Copenhagen, where the local transport company, Movia, will put the buses through their paces on a wide range of routes and conditions, testing their feasibility as one of the key factors to help the city reach its goal of being the world’s first zero-emissions capital by 2025.

The project is carried out with the help of the Municipality of Copenhagen, DONG Energy, City-Trafik and Arriva - it is expected to last for two years.

BYD Invents “Watch Key”

We’re sure you’ve all been in the same situation at some point or another, you cant find your keys in your bag and you spend 20 minutes standing next your car wondering if you actually have your keys with you or not, you start to worry that you left them somewhere. BYD scientists have probably been in the same situation before and have come up with a solution, the key watch.

The new BYD watch features a keyless intelligent key into molded into a quartz watch to receive and sends electro-magnetic signals to the car and relies on radio frequency and ID recognition technology. The car owner only needs to wear the watch in the proximity of the car to gain access to the car and presumably turn on the engine as well.
When developing the watch key, the biggest problem was solving the problem of interference,” said Mr Wang, the engineer. The solution to this problem benefitted from SBID technology, one of BYD’s IT patents. It coats plastic with metal. The technology is proprietary to BYD, who own independent intellectual property rights. BYD has already applied for 36 patents in China, of which 9 have been granted, and it has applied for 21 patents abroad. This technology has already been widely used in the BYD OEM Nokia and MOTO mobile phones. With this technology, a high frequency antenna can be put in the plastic base of the watch, preventing the antenna from being obstructed by the base, effectively enhancing the signal. At the same time, the base can fix the watch mechanism and circuit board, killing two birds with one stone.

BYD are serious about their expansion in the watch business and will introduce different styles and ranges in the near future as part of a drive to push the companies technological abilities. In addition the Key Watch BYD also created a system that allows car owners to remotely start their car, open the doors and turn on the air conditioning system prior to the car owners arriving at their cars.

Aston Martin owners might not be entirely impressed, the company partnered with watch maker Jaeger-LeCoultre in 2008 which saw the two create a 37,000USD watch that is capable of opening the doors of your Aston Martin DBS.

BYD’s electric taxi going to London

Chinese automaker BYD Auto Co Ltd, which is backed by US business magnate Warren Buffett, will supply 50 electric cars to London taxi firm greentomatocars under an agreement signed on Wednesday. The vehicles will take to London’s roads in the second quarter of 2013.

The model being introduced to the British capital is BYD’s e6, which has been available in the Chinese market since October 2011, and is China’s first all-electric model for public use.

Powered by recyclable and environmentally friendly batteries produced by BYD, the e6 can travel 300 kilometers on a single charge in urban conditions.

BYD’s website said the cost of driving a conventional vehicle would be three times higher than driving an e6, as it only uses 19.5 kWh of electricity per 100 km.
