Hi Guys,

I bought an Hyundai I10 in 2013 and everything was fine until about Sept 2018. Then my AC stopped cooling, I dont use may car much to date in 2020 it has only done about 30000km.
In my previous car Santro I dud not need to refill the ac gas for about 7 years. Anyhow I took it to Popular the authorized dealer and service center. They claimed to do a level 1 repair/service and charged me over 3.5k.

Six months later no cooling at all. I took it back and asked them what happened, they denied having done the previous service and this time they did another level 1 service and actually changed a part, (I don't know if they actually did, as it is a workshop they probably have a lot of old parts lying about. They charged Rs 7850. The cheating beggars also did the disinfectant trick by spraying that into the vents.

Ten months later the ac is not cooling again. I took it to a local ac place, they said it could cost RS10k or more, I have no choice as the authorized place is cheating me all the time. Anyway they filled it with gas, and within a month of almost no use (just before the lockdown) the cooling is not working at all.

Any ideas please, I know nothing about cars. Thankyou, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ps The local place changed the filter and it was absolutely filthy, I think the authorized place did not change it. I have not given it to the local place yet, as if the lockdown is extended i will not have a car so waiting for that to be over.

It's most probably the evaporator coil going kapoot over and over again. It's a serious defect in i10. I too must have replaced it 2-3 times. No point getting ac gas refilled again and again. Take your car to a good ac mechanic and get it checked in front of your eyes. You might have to wait around 2 hours or so but you can confirm what's the problem. Also upload the bill of 7850rs if you have.

Thankyou, do you have any idea how much it will cost, I have to do it anyhow but just wondering. The place I am going to now is supposed to be the best in the area, he also said not to fill it with too much gas as something will get pushed out.

Anyway thanks for replying.

1. If any refrigerant left or if you feel little cooling, let me know the refrigerant pressures of HI and Low side.
2. If no refrigerant left ask them to fill nitrogen and check the pressure next day. Do not use AC when nitrogen filled.
3. Spot leak test, ask them to Vacuum the AC system and wait for half an hour any leak will appear in the guage as vacuum drops. If so they can find the leak by using electronic leak tester or using dye.
4. Evaporator coils hidden inside the dash so first you need to make sure is there any leak in Condenser and Compressor. By looking visually you can find some leaks, check any oil residue on the compressor or condenser. if these are fine check Hi and low ports and refrigerant pipe. Next is evaporator coil.
5. If it is any component leak it should be replaced with exact quantity of recommended compressor oil specified for replacing that particular part there after fill the gas after properly vacuuming the AC system with correct Hi and Low side pressures because these pressures are depend on ambient temperature.

Thankyou, Unfortunately I don't know abcd about cars, but the local place (which is apparently the best and where all my cousins go) say the dash has to be removed and that is why the cost will be high. I will ask them to do what you said, but I don't think they will listen. I will probably wait a week or so, incase the lockdown is extened I will be stuck without a car.

If they said Dash to be removed it is evaporator coil. Let them put 15ml of compressor oil and do the vacuum and fill gas. The must change the O rings. Where do you live, based on that I can app approximately will give you Hi and Lo pressures.

Thanks,

I live in Trichur Kerala.
I believe there are excellent AC mechanics in Kerala and in Thrissur with good equipment. All over the India most of the AC equipment shops are owned by Kerala people.

After replacing the evaporator coil follow below process.

1. Try to active vacuum near to 30 PSI.
2. Check for vacuum leak. If guage needle stand still even after 30 mins. There will be no leak..
3. Blue color guage is Lo side final pressure should be between 40 to 50 PSI
4. Red color guage is High side final pressure should be between 180 to 220 PSI
5. Stop filling Refrigerant once you achieve those pressures.

Thank you very much for such a detailed reply. I will tell the AC place . There are plenty of places, but finding a honest one is the problem. When even the company ASS cheats customers there is a tension when going to workshops, especially when I know nothing about it.

Anyhow the latest place is supposed to be excellent, but they won't let me hang around and watch.

Thanks, they are saying it will be around 10k as they have to remove dashboard, I did ask at another place they said 8 maybe a bit more. But the 10k place is more highly recommended and seems to be more professional.

Will post the 7850 bill if I can find it.

Totally echoing @allhyundaicars sir's and @Suryaputhra ji's words.

Adding a point of info , one of my friend's verna was serviced in Popular Hyundai , Trivandrum , and as we stay back always while work is being done, we know the behind the scenes - These guys do the A/c work , alignment work outside (Although they have their own equipments, they give it to outside) , so what we did was , we neately drove ours to the outside garage , obtained the bill , claimed it through EW (exteded warranty) .
The evaporator coil /core complaint is a known issue , only solution I advice is for A/c works take it to an A/c specialist shops , not service centres , as they really aggravate the problems (a car with a cooling pipe/hose leak , can be changed to evaporator core issue ) .

Thank you, although Popular Hyundai has a waiting area, they won't let me wait while the work is done, I have asked many times before.

Maybe, I am not being forceful enough when asking.

Even I had fight with Ford service centre once when they didn't let me stand besides my ride, the explanation they gave was - You are being requested to wait in lounge , and you can see the work from there , I had asked the one who spoke to me , to come to lounge , and show me my car from there , he was embarassed and to make me more furious he told , "Sir , we have concerns for your safety". I replied, "I have more concern for my ride."- I had a heated argument with Customer relations in charge ,and finally he agreed to my demands. After that I got in touch with one of the senior workshop floor incharge , who takes care of the ride , just like I do , thereby I don't stand by the ride these days.

They won't even let me wait in the lounge, they say the work will take a long time, I said I am prepared to wait, but they won't let me.
