IN CONVERSATION: JUSTIN LEE -TEAM LEADER FOR GLOBAL MARKETING AT S&T HYOSUNG MOTORS

Team ICB: When will DSK-Hyosung launch the cruiser range comprising of the GV250 and the GV650 in India?

Justin Lee: We are looking to launch the GV650 cruiser first and the launch is slated for post September 2012. The GV250 will come next, between December 2012 and February 2013. Both motorcycles will come through the CKD route.

Team ICB: Could you give us a sense of what to expect from DSK-Hyosung in 2013, in terms of new motorcycle launches. We’ve been hearing about an off road motorcycle. Could you throw some light on that.

Justin Lee: DSK Hyosung will launch 3 more bikes next year. One of them will be an off roading 200cc water cooled bike.

Team ICB: What is the amount of localization that DSK-Hyosung will implement in its Indian motorcycle range in the coming years as there have been various reports suggesting that the DSK group wants to aggressively increase localization in order to bring down costs of the motorcycles, for a bigger marketshare and higher volumes.

Justin Lee: Yes, we are looking at more localization in our motorcycles. However. the engine will be imported fully from South Korea. This is the most critical item which we are not yet confident of manufacturing in India, unless we actually find someone in India itself, in whom we can develop faith and rely upon. But as of now, there are no plans of manufacturing Hyosung engines in India. Localization will be limited to other parts.

DSK Hyosung, the newly formed partnership between South Korea’s S&T Motors and Pune-based DSK Group to sell Hyosung-branded sports bikes, is eyeing a slice of the high-volume market 125cc and 150cc motorcycle market in India.

The company plans to develop India-specific small capacity motorcycles in the next two years. Although the Korean firm sells its off-road bike, the RT125D in Europe and is studying the feasibility of the engine for India, the local partner plans to develop these small-capacity engines as well once the plant and the R&D centre are set up.

The company is still scouting for land and is hopeful of finalising a site in the next three months. In the meanwhile, DSK Hyosung is betting on its latest offering, the GT250R, to sell 3,000 units in 2012-13 with total sales of 3,750 units. The company has delayed the launch of its GV650 cruiser to September-October while the GV250 will be launched in December this year. The company is also working to expand the number of its 18 dealerships at present to 35-40 by March 2013.

On the 16th of January, DSK MotoWheels-Hyosung will launch the 2013 GV650 Cruiser motorcycle in India. This motorcycle will be imported into India through the completely knocked down(CKD) route. The CKD kits will be assembled at DSK-Hyosung’s Wai assembly facility at Maharashtra. The 2013 Hyosung GV650 cruiser will be the second such motorcycle to be launched by DSK-Hyosung in India. The motorcycle is expected to undercut the Hyosung ST7 cruiser in terms of pricing, with a sub INR 5 lakh price tag likely for the GV650 cruiser.

Hyosung launches its new Aquila GV650 cruiser

That's right! The Aquila is back and now, it's the bigger 650cc version that's come to India. It's called the Hyosung Aquila GV650 Pro and for the price they're asking - Rs 4.99 lakhs, ex-showroom, Delhi - it's quite a lot of motorcycle for the money.

In the Hyosung stable, the Aquila GV650 sits as the sportier cruiser with more up-to-date styling while the ST7’s appeal is in its easy-going character and classic styling. It’s powered by a 647cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 90-degree V-Twin that puts out 70.2 bhp and 6.2 kgm of torque. In terms of equipment, you get a single front and rear disc, alloy wheels that they claim are light-weight, a digital display, adjustable forward controls and adjustable 43mm upside-down forks. The styling, no matter how much they deny it, is inspired - to put it mildly - by the legendary Harley-Davidson V-Rod.
