Honda to increase Amaze’s production to reduce waiting period

Riding high on the success of its first diesel offering, the Honda Amaze, Honda Car India is looking to add more volumes by bringing down the waiting period of the sub-four metre sedan.

Mr. Jnaneshwar Sen, senior vice president, Honda cars India, said -
The demand for Amaze has been so strong and we still continue to have more bookings. In order to reduce the waiting period, we have decided to start a third shift at the Greater Noida plant by November.
Ever since the Amaze was launched in India, Honda’s manufacturing plant in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and the powertrain plant in Tapukara, Rajasthan, have been working on full steam to meet the customer demand. Honda is also in the process of setting up an assembly line at its Tapukara facility which would double the company’s annual production capacity to 2,40,000 units by 2014.

The Brio based sedan is available with an 89PS 1.2 litre i-VTEC petrol motor and a 100PS 1.5 litre i-DTEC diesel engine. Both the engines are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox while the petrol engine is also available with a 5-speed automatic transmission.

The addition of a third shift would help Honda in reducing the waiting period for the Amaze. Considering that the waiting period for the Ford EcoSport, another sub-four metre contender, is shooting up, Honda’s move to increase the production of the Amaze is well timed.

Amaze selling well; guess nobody's surprised! A great all rounder from Honda at a great price was bound to be a hit. I guess it has pulled a lot of City buyers, maybe some potential Brio buyers too. Brio's numbers are low, maybe because of Honda's production constraint.

The latest family sedan from Honda in the Indian market, Honda Amaze, has clocked the fastest 30,000 sales for any new model in the company’s history in India. Honda Amaze was launched in April 2013, and has helped the HCIL to achieve a constant growth with each successive month and an overall growth of 65 per cent during April -July 2013 as compared to same period last year.

Elated at Honda Amaze achieving the fastest 30,000mark for HCIL till date, Mr. Jnaneswar Sen, Sr. Vice President -Marketing & Sales, Honda Cars India Ltd. said
Honda Amaze was conceptualized, produced and marketed as a family car for the evolving India. We are ecstatic with the overwhelming response received for Amaze since the launch and are delighted having delivered 30,000 Honda Amaze to our customers. Honda Amaze was developed following extensive surveys in India on customer’s needs and requirements setting new benchmarks in the industry in terms of design, packaging, cabin comfort, and fuel-efficiency. Aggressive localization of more than 90% in Honda Amaze has helped us price the Amaze competitively. We are very happy that Honda Amaze has created a fresh excitement in the car market and is being appreciated as customer’s proud, easy-to-use and most comfortable sedan.
Honda Amaze is available in diesel and petrol variants, and embodies the best of Honda technologies. The diesel variant is equipped with a 1.5Li-DTEC diesel engine that provides highest certified mileage of 25.8 km/litre and best in class max power output of 100PS@3600rpm, thereby establishing a new benchmark in performance and fuel efficiency.

Commenting on the growing customer base for Amaze, Mr. Sen added, “Honda Amaze has helped us to reach out to many new customers and bring them into Honda fold. Out of the total Amaze customer base, more than 80% are first time Honda buyers.”

In order to meet the growing customer demand and reduce waiting period for Honda Amaze, HCIL recently announced that it will commence third shift of production at the Greater Noida plant from November 2013. After tasting success with the i-DTEC engine in the Amaze, Honda is ready to equip the Brio, City and Jazz with the diesel engine too. Honda is ready with the City and will unveil it this month with launch likely around December-January.

The main reason Honda hasn't launched Brio diesel is due to production restraints. Honda's new plant in Rajasthan will double the current annual production. Brio Diesel is being delayed because Honda is struggling to price it competitively. The Brio and Amaze cost the same to manufacture, the Amaze is priced higher thanks to Indian Buyers Perception that saloons are more premium.

Honda aims for 90 percent localisation of the diesel motor by end 2013. After the new plant is in operation, the Brio Diesel will be introduced.

Honda launches new Amaze variant - SX in both petrol and diesel. This adds dual airbags and ABS+EBD to the erstwhile 'S' variant (diesel already has the latter). This is a good move by Honda as a lot of people were finding it difficult to stretch budget from S to VX just to get full safety kit. With the SX variant, there is an option for buyers to get full safety kit without needing to spend extra for alloys, ORVM indicators and sundry exterior features.
