Hero Electric And SUN Mobility Partner To Deploy 10,000 Electric Swappable Two-Wheelers In 2022-23

Hero Electric has partnered with Sun Mobility to deploy electric two-wheelers integrated with the latter's smart- swappable battery technology. As part of the partnership, Hero Electric and SUN Mobility jointly will begin deployments in the next three months with a target of around 10,000 electric two-wheelers by the end of this year.

Sun Mobility's battery technology and the interoperability of battery swapping infrastructure will enable Hero Electric's customers to own electric two-wheelers without having to worry about battery and charging infrastructure. It also addresses the issue of extensive charging times and range anxiety, as the batteries can be swapped in a matter of minutes. The network of Quick Interchange Stations allows for a 'refuelling' infrastructure that is faster, cheaper, and more convenient than the conventional petrol and diesel pumps for ICE vehicles. This solution also works on a Pay-Per-Use model that empowers individuals, e-commerce companies, and fleet operators to easily adopt electric mobility for last-mile connectivity.

Commenting on the partnership, Sohinder Gill, CEO, Hero Electric, said, " Through this partnership, we will be offering variety of solutions to the customers suiting their needs and giving them the ultimate pleasure of adopting eco-friendly economical and convenient mobility solutions. Hero Electric and Sun Mobility would create an ecosystem where the customer has access to the latest battery technologies throughout the product lifecycle without incurring repetitive costs of purchase. They would also collaborate on innovative financing options making it easier for customers to go electric.

Chetan Maini, Co-Founder and Chairman of Sun Mobility, said, "The confluence of Hero Electric's futuristic vision on understanding the EV space and the pros of the battery swapping technology, along with the government's commendable initiatives to come up with tangible policies, will definitely augur well with our common goal to accelerate the demand and adoption of EVs in the country."

Hero Electric performed the ground-breaking ceremony of its second plant in Ludhiana, Punjab. The upcoming manufacturing facility is adjacent to its existing facility and is targeted at ramping up the production capacity. This latest announcement comes with a strong need to increase operational efficiency and production capacity to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles.

Hero Electric has been in the business of manufacturing E2Ws for over 14 years and is committed to bringing a positive transformation in the way Indians commute. The greenfield plant is spread across an area of 10 acres and will have an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles. The new manufacturing facility will also be in sync with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Make in India’ and will look to promote indigenous capabilities in both domestic and international markets.

The announcement of a new facility comes months after the company announced raising its annual production capacity to 1 million units in the next three years.

Naveen Munjal, Managing Director, Hero Electric said, “We are very excited to announce our new manufacturing facility in Ludhiana given the exciting growth phase for the EV market. India’s EV revolution rides on two wheels making this the perfect time to expand and grow. The upcoming greenfield plant will aid in delivering the best mobility solution and catering to the spurred demand for e2Ws. The facility will boost our vision of moving the world to sustainable mobility solutions. This is our second facility, and as we march ahead, we will invest in expanding capacities to achieve the target of 1 million capacities by 2025.”

Sohinder Gill, CEO, Hero Electric said, “Looking at the opportunity and the long waiting list of customers we have decided to accelerate the construction of a 200,000-capacity plant at Ludhiana. This plant would be functional in a record time of 7 months using prefab hybrid modular techniques.”

The plant will be a hub for building new battery design and development and futuristic products. The plant will be a focal point for IOTA, connected vehicles, R&D, and the launch of new features, etc. The 2nd plant at Ludhiana will also bolster R&D and HR mechanisms for skill building and talent acquisition through integrated and unique recruitment plans.

Hero Electric’s new manufacturing utility aligns with its vision of creating a more sustainable, connected, and accessible future of E2W mobility. Witnessing a robust demand, the company has recently inaugurated dealerships in UP and Kerala and has rolled out the first batch of electric scooters from Mahindra’s Pithampur plant in Madhya Pradesh.

Hero Electric to set up Rs 1200 crore electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Rajasthan

heev-sixteen_nine.jpg
Two-wheeler maker Hero Electric will set up a mega electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant with an investment of Rs 1200 crore in Rajasthan, the company said on Monday. The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government at the Invest Rajasthan summit, according to news agency IANS.

The proposed unit will be located in Salarpur industrial region in the Alwar district. The production is expected to start by the end of 2023.

Hero Electric MD Naveen Munjal said that this manufacturing facility is part of the company's capacity enhancement to boost EV adoption across India. The unit, he said, will allow the state to spearhead a clean mobility solution shift and promote ecological tourism practices.

The two-wheeler major said that the proposed facility will manufacture all the current and upcoming bikes.

"Greenfield facility of this mega-size and large budget gives us the opportunity to introduce very energy efficient green manufacturing processes with a healthy blend of automation using robotic arms and the nimble-fingered skills of the local artisan workforce, using the clean solar energy that state provides," said CEO Sohinder Gill said.

In a separate development, Hero MotoCorp recently announced that it has entered into a collaboration with HPCL to establish charging infrastructure for EVs in the country. As a part of the initiative, the companies will set up charging infrastructure for two-wheeled electric vehicles across the country, thereby providing a fillip to mass mobility’s transition towards an electrified future.

The two companies will first establish charging infrastructure at HPCL’s existing network of nationwide energy stations, with the likelihood of subsequently broadening the collaboration for supplementary business opportunities.

The company last week also announced that it had increased the ex-showroom prices of its motorcycles and scooters by Rs 1,000. However, the exact quantum of increase will vary by model and market.

NIDEC’s electric motors will now be deployed on Hero Electrics city speed range of electric bikes. The roll-out is expected in February 2023.

On the sidelines of the IEB Autotech2022, which is currently underway in Tokyo, Hero Electric has formally announced a preferred-partner relationship with electric motor manufacturer, NIDEC Japan.

Hero Electric entered into a partnership with NIDEC Japan over two years ago and began co-developing electric bikes motors for its entire range. The co-development involved extensive inputs from the Hero Electric’s R&D team to the hugely experienced team at NIDEC.

Speaking at the side-lines of the IEB Autotech 2022, Sohinder Gill, CEO, Hero Electric, India said, “Our partnership with NIDEC Japan was forged to help alleviate our growing supply chain issues. Having them on board and our close partnership with them is now allowing us to develop power train components across all our product range progressively.”

Speaking on the supply chain issues faced by Hero Electric, Gill added, “Had the leading Indian suppliers of batteries and other automotive components exhibited the confidence and a risk appetite to take a leap into the EV world, India would have laid a foundation of a very robust Indian supply chain of all EV components and helped India’s mission of being self-reliant in emerging technologies.”

Hero Electric is one of the largest electric two-wheeler companies in India, with over 550,000 customers. The company recently signed an MoU with the Rajasthan Government to set up its mega EV manufacturing hub with an annual production capacity of 2 million units.
