The central government on Monday approved a proposal to levy a "Green Tax" on old vehicles that are considered polluting to the environment. As part of the proposal transport vehicles older than 8 years could be charged a tax at the rate of 10-25 per cent of road tax at the time of renewal of fitness certificate.

For personal vehicles, the tax would have to be paid at the time of mandatory renewal of registration certificate after 15 years. Currently, all commercial vehicles need to get fitness certificate renewed every year after the first two years.

Government and commercial vehicles older than 15 years to be scrapped.

Ray of hope, we can retain our loved vehicles paying the green tax. Current 5-year road tax for scooters and small cars were around 900 and 4000 respectively, so that won't be a significant amount.

Re-registering 15-Year-Old Vehicles Could Cost Over 25 Times Under New MoRTH Proposal

In a bid to discourage plying of old vehicles on public roads, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has submitted a proposal to the government to increase the cost of renewal of registration of passenger vehicles older than 20 years and commercial vehicles older than 15 years, by 25 times. The annual fitness test fee for CVs could go up by 125 times than the current prices, if the proposal is accepted. The proposal though is in its initial stage and the ministry has circulated the policy paper to different departments for feedback.

This article is based on TOI September 2019 article with just a paragraph added about yesterday's brief of scrappage policy by FM. The whole Malayalam media is busy misleading people. They swallowed the term voluntary as a whole.
