Hot on the heels of MG’s successful launch in India comes the news of the imminent entry another Chinese carmaker – Great Wall Motors. This is primarily due to the fact that MG’s feature-rich and large-for-its-price Hector has struck a chord in India, and Chinese carmakers are now more confident of impressing and attracting Indian buyers.

Based in Baoding Hebel, around 150km south of Beijing, China’s most successful SUV maker Great Wall is well on its way to making its presence felt in India. With a company already set up here, it is currently scouting for the best location to get a plant running. More importantly, it will showcase products from its successful brand Haval at the upcoming Auto Expo 2020. According to sources, the stand will have three of Haval's successful SUVs – the H4, H6 and H9 – on display. A couple of electric cars from sister brand WEY are also likely to be showcased.

Great Wall Motors India first official teaser video – Namaste India

great-wall-motors-china-india.jpg

Great Wall Motors formally announced its Indian debut on Twitter by posting the line, “Namaste India! All set for great things ahead”. GWM’s sub-brand, Haval will also make an entry with its SUV-prioritised portfolio. You can see the video below.

In the video, towards the end, you will see a silhouette of an SUV. This is most likely the Haval H6 SUV coupe, which was spied on test in India couple of weeks back. Considering SUVs are in huge demand, and seeing the success of MG Hector and Kia Seltos, it is very likely that Great Wall Motors start their journey in India with an SUV.

Great Wall Motors from China planning to buy GM India plant near Pune

It looks like General Motors’ phase-wise de-escalation of its Indian operations is set to attain completion sooner than later. After years of struggling in our market, the American auto giant stopped selling its cars in the domestic market in 2017 and subsequently sold its Halol manufacturing plant to SAIC (MG Motor).

Currently, GM India is operating its Talegaon manufacturing facility in Maharashtra which produces vehicles solely for export markets but the numbers aren’t great. Livemint reports that the company is in advanced talks with Great Wall Motors, China’s largest SUV maker, to transfer the ownership of its Talegaon unit.

It is no secret that Great Wall Motors has been exploring the Indian market for quite sometime and is now about to make its entry. The SUV specialist is set to showcase some of its products at the upcoming Auto Expo next month to gather public opinion and introduce itself to the market.

The publication also reports that Great Wall Motors has singed an MoU with GM and is currently in the process of negotiating with the Maharashtra government for possible incentives should it decide to acquire the Talegaon plant. The deal, if goes ahead, is estimated to be valued at around USD 250 to 300 million.

China's Great Wall Motor (GWM) has shut the doors on its India operations and the company recently fired the last 11 remaining employees in the country. According to a recent report, the Indian employees from different departments were given the pink slip earlier this week along with three months of advance salary from July to September. The report also states that the laid-off staff have been paid variable pay for six months. Neither of the employees was allegedly offered an alternative to work or relocate. The update comes as GWM's agreement with General Motors (GM) in India was set to expire on June 30, 2022.
