Govt approves new category of vehicle 'quadricycle'

In a move that could impact the entire auto universe, the government has given approval for recognizing a new segment in the automobile space which could see a new wave of innovation among OEMs. The proposed new segment could be called the 'quadricycle' --- positioned between a three-wheeler and a passenger car, reports CNBC-TV18's Ronojoy Banerjee quoting sources.
According to sources the idea is of having the basic DNA of a three-wheeler with the stability and safety of a car.
From an industry perspective it is still to firm up a common view on this proposed vehicle. The whole idea behind this is that the government feels that there is a seemingly large gap between what we know today as a traditional three wheeler and a passenger car.
It feels that there is a need for a smaller vehicle, which will run on four wheels and high on mileage. However, at the same time there will be low carbon emissions compared to a passenger vehicle. Thats why there is a segment like this that already exists in Europe, which is called the quadricycle.
For this, the Ministry of Road and Transport has formed a technical committee, which is really looking at all the various aspects of this.
What should be the basic criteria and the safety requirement that this car or this proposed quadricycle would have to meet? It is very clear the biggest beneficiary from this would be Bajaj Auto because they unveiled the RE60 in the Auto Expo earlier this year.
Rajiv Bajaj has even said that the RE60 is ready, but it needs the requirements of a quadricycle of Europe. He said that the company will start production of the RE60 once the government comes out with the basic safety requirements.
But as far as SIAM is concerned, it feels that once it gets the recognition this has the potential of becoming a mass segment. But again it maintains that as an industry perspective it is yet to take a final view.
