The Indian government has announced its decision to make the passenger side airbag mandatory in new cars. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in a gazette notification announced the new rule that will require all new vehicles to have dual front airbags as standard fitment from April 1, 2021. Meanwhile, existing vehicles will be required to be sold with dual airbags from August 31, 2021.

Dual airbags as mandatory is a welcome move. Alongwith this, Govt. needs to also set norms on structural strength of the body-shell of the cars so that in the name of fuel efficiency brands do not compromise on the structural strength and should also take strict action on brands which do not send / avoid sending their cars for NCAP. With these moves and rules being set the brands which have 0 or 1-2 stars ratings for their cars will be pushed to meet the safety requirements whether it is the base model or middle model (as top model of every popular brand has safety features).

After our homes & office, cars are the next place where in we spend a majority of our time. As we all look for safety of our premises, same ways we need to be equally vocal of the safety in our cars.

Meanwhile, existing vehicles will be required to be sold with dual airbags from August 31, 2021.
What does this mean, Sir? Airbags as far as I know, aren't easy to retro-fit.

Nitin Gadkari urges carmakers to offer six airbags as standard in India

Nitin Gadkari, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, has appealed to car companies to equip their vehicles with a minimum of six airbags as standard across all variants. The Minister, in a tweet, informed that he has urged carmakers to provide six airbags even for the entry-level trim. This is a substantial leap as compared to the existing regulation of mandatory two front airbags on all cars. It is an appreciable move and is in line with the minister's pledge to reduce road accidents and resultant deaths in the country by at least half before 2025.

Good move but might not be adopted immediately. What can be done sooner though is to set a build-quality standard for all cars sold in India. Six airbags with wafer-thin structure wouldn't be that effective after all.
