Update Day 1 (IST) 17th April 2015

challenge-europe-590x332.jpg

Ferrari Challenge Europe – 40 cars on the track for season-opener
Monza, 17 April – The 2015 Ferrari Challenge Europe got underway in style today with 40 cars and drivers from 15 different nations on the track for the first rainy free practice session at Monza. A total of 19 cars are entered for the Trofeo Pirelli and Trofeo Pirelli Am, with 21 competing for the Coppa Shell which also encompasses the Coppa Gentlemen for over-55 drivers. After the first round at Monza, the series moves to Mugello in May and then on to Budapest in June. The Hungaroring plays host to the Ferrari Racing Days, a real celebration of the Prancing Horse that will see the Formula 1 Clienti and XX Programme cars out on the asphalt in addition to the Challenge fleet. There will also be the traditional exhibition by the Scuderia Ferrari’s F1 single-seaters. July brings a round at Le Castellet in France before the action moves back Imola in Italy in September with Valencia closing the season proper in September. The Finali Mondiali take place in November, hosting the final act of the three Challenge series (Europe, North America and Asia Pacific) and the awarding of the World Championship title.

Trofeo Pirelli. Several new faces and many familiar ones make up the start grid of the Trofeo Pirelli which this season is divided into Pirelli Pro and Am classes. The drivers to watch in the Pro category include Dario Caso, a real expert, Robert Pergl and Bjorn Grossmann and, of course, Canadian John Farano who has already started his season in the US, racing at both Daytona and Homestead. Also there will be American Stephen Earle, who races in GT with Ferrari too.

Coppa Shell. The Coppa Shell lineout is interesting too, comprising 21 dedicated enthusiasts ready to do breath-taking, wheel-to-wheel battle around the 5-km-plus circuit at Monza. Favourites include Dutch driver Fons Scheltema, who won the Coppa Gentlemen last year, and Erich Prinoth, one of the Ferrari one-make series’ most loyal competitors. Also competing are the multi-talented Eric Cheung, who is in other Challenge series too as well as driving in the F1 Clienti and XX categories, and Belgian Jacques Duyver, one of the protagonists earlier this year in a 458 Italia GT3 in the Gulf 12 Hours. Several drivers in the Challenge are also serious contenders in the GT competitions, demonstrating the high standard of driving in this championship and the 458 Challenge EVO’s exceptional prowess as a track car.

The car. In 2015, the car used once again will be the latest Challenge-focused evolution of the 458 Italia, Maranello’s superb V8 sports car. Launched last year, the EVO kit features a new front splitter, more powerful brakes, improved handling and a GT-derived rear wing, all of which combine to allow drivers showcase their talents. This is true to such an extent that the Challenge has become something of a launch pad for competitors aiming for the GT categories. It should come as no surprise therefore that some of the champions of recent years have gone onto achieve great things in highly competitive events such as the European Le Mans Series and Blancpain Endurance Series.

The programme. After today’s free practice (two hours in the morning and one in the afternoon for each category), qualifying for the Trofeo Pirelli runs from 9.40 to 10.10 tomorrow morning followed at 10.55 by qualifying for the Coppa Shell. The first two races come in the afternoon: at 14.10 for the Trofeo Pirelli and 16.10 for the Coppa Shell. On Sunday, Trofeo Pirelli qualifying takes place from 9.00 to 9.30 and for the Coppa Shell from 10.55 to 11.25. The Trofeo Pirelli race 2 starts at 13.55 followed by the Coppa Shell race 2 at 15.55.

Update Day 2, 18th April-2015

Ferrari Challenge Europe – Wins for Babalus, Rocca and Duyver in Monza

Monza, 18 April – The Ferrari Challenge Europe season has opened with two absolutely scintillating races. After the rain of yesterday, the drivers were greeted by a much warmer, sunnier day, allowing them to unleash the 458 Challenge EVO’s full potential in the first round of the European series of the world’s most famous single-make championship.

Trofeo Pirelli. The Trofeo Pirelli had the honor of officially opening the season with a race that delivered a whole slew of dogfights and thrills. At the start, Bjorn Grossmann managed to nip past the Italian Babalus who was in pole position, while Dario Caso hung on to third ahead of Florian Merckx. Just behind them, there was a bit of confusion in the pack.

Thankfully, all the drivers managed to emerge unscathed from the first chicane, except for Maxim Lukyanov whose wheels went onto the grass, resulting in an ultimately harmless spin. Grossmann and Babalus then got locked into a one-on-one battle for the lead, which allowed Caso to catch up. Shortly afterward, at the Parabolica, Joe Macari and Stephen Earle’s cars made contact, ending the race for both drivers. On lap five, Dario Caso coasted up to the pitwall and retired, causing the Safety Car to come out.

When the race was restarted, Babalus (Autoropa) was virtually glued to Grossmann’s tailpipes and, two laps later, managed to come out best of the Parabolica, slipping past the Octane 126 driver at the first chicane. Behind them, Florian Merckx was having no problem staying in third. Once out in front, Babalus put some distance between himself and Grossmann, eventually crossing the finish line 5”132 ahead of the German and 13”728 ahead of the Belgian Baron Service driver.

Pirelli Am. The Trofeo Pirelli Am race was dominated by a fiery battle between Swede Martin Nelson and Alessandro Vezzoni. The Italian Rossocorsa – Pellin Racing driver made several valiant but fruitless attempts to get past his rival. Tommaso Rocca, on the other hand, clawed his way back skillfully from 16th on the grid to eighth overall, earning himself the third step on the podium in his category. After the race, anyway, the final standing was altered by two decisions of the Race Direction: both Nelson and Vezzoni were penalized and Rocca was promoted first. Second went to Germany’s Andreas Selger (StileF) while third was Swiss Nicolas Sturzinger (Foitek Racing).

Coppa Shell. Two hours later was the turn of Coppa Shell cars. The first lap really delivered on drama. Making superb use of his pole position, Erich Prinoth (Ineco – Mp Racing) managed to keep his lead ahead of Belgian Jacques Duyver while Indian driver Gautam Singhania almost immediately moved up into third. 2014 Coppa Gentlemen winner Fons Scheltema, however, was pranged by another driver, while Rick Lovat spun at the Variante della Roggia and ended up retiring. Out in front, Prinoth and the two Kessel Racing drivers quickly pulled away from the rest of the field along with Thomas Lindroth (Baron Service) and Eric Cheung (AF Corse). Tension rose several notches at the last corner of the last lap, however, as halfway through the Parabolica, Prinoth found a slower car right in his line and had to slow. Duyver, who’d got fastest out of the corner, quickly took advantage of Prinoth’s misfortune. He had an easy time of it on the straight, going on to win with a 1”624 lead over Prinoth and a 6”118 over Singhania, author of the fastest lap of the race. Prinoth won the Over-55 race with his teammate Thomas Gostner taking second and Australian Paul Van Loenhout of AF Corse third. Tomorrow, they do it all over again with Race 2 in each series: the Trofeo Pirelli at 13.55 and the Coppa Shell at 15.55.

Ferrari Challenge Europe – Blistering comeback from Babalus, smiles for Vezzoni and Prinot

Monza, 19 April – A thrilling second day for the first round of the Ferrari Challenge Europe at Monza with blistering wheel-to-wheel duels, plenty of drama and a spectacular comeback worthy of a truly great champion from Babalus.

Trofeo Pirelli. The Trofeo Pirelli provided the most exciting racing of the day. The big drama came in qualifying when Babalus, who was on pole, was sent to the back of the grid for a tyres-related irregularity and started instead from 13th. At the off, Tommaso Rocca went too soon on the throttle from ninth position causing chaos at the first corner. Rossocorsa’s no. 97 car made contact with Bjorn Grossmann (Octane 126), David Gadrì (Rossocorsa) and Florian Merckx (Baron Service) at the first chicane.

Fortunately, the rest of the group managed to avoid the tangle of cars. At the Roggia Chicane, this left Dario Caso out in front ahead of David Gostner and Alessandro Vezzoni while Babalus took advantage of the general confusion to quickly work his way up to seventh. A couple of laps later, the winner of race-1 had moved into fifth. On lap 3, Caso made a mistake and was passed by both Gostner (Ineco-MP Racing), who took the lead, and Vezzoni, to find Babalus back over his shoulder. However, after his error, the Rossocorsa-Pellin Racing driver quickly returned to putting the pressure on. In fact, within a short time, he had passed his teammate Vezzoni and was chasing Gostner. Babalus did everything Caso did and continued to harry on the no. 8 car even when it passed the Bolzano driver. At this point the two lead cars were really pulling away from the group with Babalus chipping a few hundredths off his rival on every lap. He tried to pass him on the 13th, delivering the race fastest lap. Caso, however, fought tooth and nail to stay in front for three laps but in the end, there was nothing he could do to defend himself from Autoropa’s no. 55 car. Babalus prepared his pass to perfection on the straight opposite the pit-lane one and, coming out of the Parabolica, took command of the race, going on to win with a 1”899 advantage over Caso and 2”625 ahead of Gostner. In the Pirelli Am class, victory went to Alessandro Vezzoni, who completely dominated the race, while there was a brilliant three-pronged battle between Martin Nelson (Autoropa), Andreas Segler (StileF Squadra Corse) and Nicolas Sturzinger (Foitek Racing) for second position with the trio crossing the line in that order within the space of barely two seconds.

Coppa Shell. A frightening accident at the start of the second race of the day, race 2 of the Coppa Shell, sent a bit of a shiver down the spines of everyone watching. A tightly-packed group of cars got into a bit of a tangle but Thomas Gostner got a harder whack than the others and ended up hitting Eric Cheung. The Italian driven then bounced off the end of the pit-wall while the Canadian ricocheted off the outer barrier of the track. The accident looked spectacular but luckily no one was actually hurt. In the race itself, Erich Prinoth managed to snatch the lead from poleman Thomas Loefflad (StileF Squadra Corse) while once again Gautam Singhania (Kessel Racing) drove exceptionally well, maintaining an authoritative hold on the third position he’d earned himself in qualifying. Prinoth took victory with a 1”074 lead over Loefflad and 9”600 over Singhania. As happened yesterday, the Ineco-MP Racing driver also won the Coppa Gentlemen for over-55s with Dutchman Fons Scheltema (Kessel Racing) taking second and Paul Van Loenhout (AF Corse) third. The next round is at Ferrari’s home circuit of Mugello (May 8-10).
