Hi All,

December 3rd 2009 my dad gave me call when i was at work to inform me a bad news that he has sold his Amby out. [anger]

It was very shocking for me it was the car that i learned driving and he was along with me for many years. I felt really depressed. He did not utter a word and put out the phone. That day with a sad face i entered my house to see a Red Ikon parked in the place where Amby used to be.

Previous Owner's of the Car:

I knew tht this car was opposite house's car and it remained unsed for over 3 yrs. My dad opened the main gate and without even making him talk i started asking is this opposite house car? He said yes and further he added that my neighbours had planned to sell it since it was unused for more than 3 yrs now.

Reason for not using was very simple no one in the opposite house knew to drive a car. Only opp house uncle's son knew to drive and he has got settled in US for past 3 yrs now and the car remained unused.

Pricing and condition of the car:

After some long conversations i asked my dad how much was he asking for this car. The answer was 1lakh. And further he replied that car's codition was very worst since it remained idle for 3 yrs. One dealer came and saw the car and offered only 60k. Now my face became brightened and asked my dad can we buy it for same 60k.
Then i test drove the car found out when i started the car there was a loud noise like a FFE. Then found out tht silencer has got broken and needed a replacement, even clutch started slipping and needed a replacement. All the 5 tyres were fully bald and the car started jumping and pulling to the left. And major part was it is a non power steering. But since i have driven a Amby previous i found this like a power steering.[thumbsup]

Finally we decided tht these were the only problem and i started bargaining with the owner. For my suprise tht uncle said he was welling to sell the car for 60k to me rather than to some unknown person. After the deal was done. I paid him the cash very next day and took the car.

Codn of the car when i purchased:

1. Clutch slip
2. Wheel Bearing Noise.
3. All tyres need a replacement.
4. Some corrosion coz it was unused for 3yrs.
5. Alternator bearing noise.
6. A/c power was less
7. Silencer needed a replacement.

Few pics that i clicked after i took the delivery of the car.

The next step was to change the worn out tyres. Just had a hell finding right tyres to the car. And i had a small budget of 6-7k for changing the tyres.

I inquired in many shops around 1000lights in chennai. This was the price exactly a year ago:

Bridgestone R13 175*70 around 2600 tyre with tube/tyre
Michelin R13 175*70 around 3500 tubeless/tyre
Yokohoma R13 175*70 around 3000 tubeless/tyre
Good year R13 175*70 around 2500 tyre with tube/tyre
MRF R13 175*70 around 3100 tyre with tube/tyre
JK R13 175*70 around 2800 tyre with tube/tyre
Continental R13 175*70 around 3500 tubeless/tyre
Pirelli R13 175*70 around 3700 tubeless/tyre

None of this was into my budget and my rims were very weak and had bends in it so i need to change the rims too. So finally settled for so called brand Rotalla. Many of them will guess it right yeah it is china tyre. But i had a warranty of 2yrs.

Rotalla R13 175*70 around 1700 only tyre per tyre and another 800 for set of 4 MRF tubes. Initially many of them suggested why are you going for china branded tyre. But after purchase of the tyre i hve no regrets at all. It is as normal as other tyre.

So here is my bill:

Rotalla set of 4 tyres: 6800
MRF tubes set of 4: 800
Wheel Balancing & Alignment : Free
A pair of new R13 rims: 1000

Total : 8600

After another month i added a set of wheel covers coz mine is a base model ikon which has only wheel cups not cover.

Bharath, i think you are fond of red cars. Is it so? Because all the cars(except that white 800) i see in your garage are red.
Anyways, about the ikon, please post pics of the interiors and the engine bay.

Well written and formatted review, Bharath. It was a fair deal for an occasionally used Ford Ikon. How old is the car and what was the odometer reading at date of purchase? Apparently, your car looks to be well maintained except for a few areas showing obvious signs of aging.

This car is June 2000 model. It is nearing its 11th b'day. It was around 52k on the odo when i got it. Now it is 65580 on the odo. Used it nearly 13-14k in a years time. Car is very well maintained. I spend atleast 15-20k on maintenance every 6 months. So far spent nearly 45000 bugs. And going to spend another 20000 nxt month for tinkering and painting. The body of the car show it is aging so i planned to modify it with latest headlamps, bumpers, many more stuff and ICE very soon.

60k was a fair deal considering the codn of the car when i got it. Bcause it is of Endura engine i was confident tht it would be able to run atleast 2lakh kms considering the early model ikons engine was fully built and imported from South Africa. This is same engine as found in Escort Anniversary edition.

That's a great way to maintain a car dude! Well my ikon is also due for tinkering/paint job!

But then going in for my ICE first! and then when Vitamin M permits for next time, will be doing the paint job & interior work needed.

Next set of Upgrades was a major one and was done during September 2010 @ around 62000Kms:

1) Clutch Overhaul - New clutch plate,cover assembly,release bearing - 8000bugs(LUK Brand)
2)All 4 wheel bearing - 1800(Front) , 1200(Rear)
3)TVS Brake cylinders - 1600(Left & Right)
4) New Filters - Petrol/Oil/Air -All are Purulator - 1350 bugs(All three)
5)Engine Oil - Bosch 950 bugs (Mineral Oil)
6)Gear Oil - Bosch 450 bugs
7)Brake Oil - TVS 250 bugs
8)Fan Belt - 550 bugs
9)Alternator Bearing - 800 bugs
10)Tension-er Bearing - 700 bugs (Plastic)
11)A/C Cooling Coil - 3800 bugs
12)A/c Gas Filling - 700 bugs
13)Electrical Checkup - 500 bugs (Replaced worn out bulbs)
14)Silencer - 4000 bugs (Full Set from neck pipe to Muffler Tip) Local Build bought it in Border Thootham near Salt Quotas (North Madras) where they specialize in hand made local silencers.

Total comes nearly 27k.

Many of them will think is it worth spending so much on a old car. But i think it is worth that money since these spares needed to be changed in all car's after it has crossed 60000kms. And now my ikon runs like a brand new one and will run for another 50000kms without any trouble.

I guess all the mechanicals of your car are in excellent condition by now. The only job remaining is the painting and maybe some interior cleaning. I am still waiting to see the interiors.

@Bharat!

That's an extensive mechanical overhaul man! Yeah, the car should be moving like a new one without any issues; same is the case with mine now.

I have a doubt here, regarding the tensioner bearing. I too got the plastic bearing (for 400 bucks) bur my mechanic did not want to fit this one. So I ended up returning it to the shop.

Is it ok to install a plastic bearing? Because, the steel one is not available seperately and I am also considerate about putting a plastic in place of steel.
