Finally! Honda Plans Diesel Engine to Beat the Competition

Finally, Honda has realized that to survive in India, their car needs a diesel heart. With growing competition from Hyundai, Fiat, Ford, Suzuki & VW, they have finally decided to go for diesel engine for the City.

Jnaneswar Sen, senior vice-president (sales & marketing), HSCI, told: “We are developing a diesel engine in Japan to power City. It could take us more than two years.”

I wonder what would be the scene in this segment in India after two years.

Still two more years , they are going to lose heavily in the market! Within two years petrol prices will be even more higher , petrol cars buyers will even more reduce.


This is the right time for them to cash in , this segment is really heating up!


And where will Honda place their diesel City? Their current City itself is costlier than a lot of diesel sedans in this segment. If they price it even higher then it wont be much of a success.

The problem with Honda is that they dont have their own diesel engines. Even in US and a few European countries, they have sourced engines from Acura and that too only for Accord, CRV and Civic. The diesel Civic recently got discontinued in US owing to the strict emission norms which were enforced.

I feel Honda should have started their operations to bring in diesel hearts for their cars long before. As far as i know, they first Honda to sport a diesel engine in india would be the Accord followed by CRV and then Civic.

who knows what scenario would be after two years and i am expecting atleast 1.5L price increase of their diesel variants.

2014 is a long way to go. Lets see what kind of Diesel engine it is going to be.
Honda is known for its driving pleasure - Will a diesel engine change it?

2014 is a long way off. by that time subsidy on diesel might go and diesel prices may be at par with petrol, also remember that the end of the world is slated for 2012. who will be there to buy them

Ha ha ha. Guess the movie has obsessed many people (Including me)!!! Lets see when the diesel for other honda cars come up in market.

the good thing is that atleast now they have started planning according to indian mkt requirements
but the bad thing is that they are a little too late

sshersh, they are not little to late, they should have already planned to launch diesel variant by this year itself, another two years is too much to ask for.

At last - Honda to go diesel way

The inevitable has happened. Honda has finally reacted to the cut-throat competition in the C-segment. According to Business Standard, Honda has planned a diesel powerplant to help the City fend off competition.

Globally, Honda has only one diesel engine, developed for Europe. This 2.2-litre engine cannot be used as Honda City needs an engine of 1.4-1.6 litres.

In the premium mid-size sedan segment, 65 per cent cars sold by City’s competitors run on diesel. The growing difference between petrol and diesel prices has seen newcomer Volkswagen Vento (which has both petrol and diesel versions) race ahead of City in the last two months. Volkswagen sold 3,973 units of Vento in March, as compared to City’s 2,773 units.

The C-segment is one of the fastest-growing, with sales rising 25 per cent a year on an average. About 140,000 units were sold in 2010-11. Honda City has been the leader for a decade. Its share was 35 per cent in 2010. Its nearest competitor, Hyundai Verna, sold half as many units. But last week, Hyundai has released the ‘Fluidic’ Verna that has clocked more than 5K bookings within days. So it’s high time Honda acted.

2 years is a pretty long time because the competition would only get tougher. Also, the city would be dated by then. They can reduce the prices instead to increase their sales.

Another option would be to source their engines from another company the way Maruti & Tata does from Fiat.

Yes instead of waiting for two years to develop a diesel engine they should first slash down the prices to survive the competition. Its only going to get even more tougher when new Fiesta sedan will launch.
