Re: Finally! Honda plans diesel City to beat the competition

Yes instead of waiting for two years to develop a diesel engine they should first slash down the prices to survive the competition. Its only going to get even more tougher when new Fiesta sedan will launch.
Slash down prices - Lower the quality. IMO, Honda will never do it. There is a certain segment of customers who still go for Honda.

Re: Finally! Honda plans diesel City to beat the competition

you don't sell large number of cars to an exclusive group of enthusiasts , which will hit the bottomline of the company. honda should get a new engine from somewhere at the earliest to remain in contention or[evil] should bribe our polititians to increase the price of diesel at par to that of petrol or better, even higher[lol]

Re: Finally! Honda plans diesel City to beat the competition

Honda has started to give freebies with its cars, I saw it in the advertisements in the newspapers. Don't know whether it will be enough.
Till the time Honda makes a diesel engine, it may happen that the government may have deregulated the price of diesel. That would be an ace in the hole for Honda

@ Truecitylover Yes i do agree quality is top most priority for Honda and that is the reason why there are many people who still vouch for a Honda. But still in order to survive the competition they better start thinking of new ideas.

Diesel Hondas to hit Indian blacktop soon?

With the past year riddled with unavoidable obstacles, Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) Ltd is now gearing up for a new innings in 2012. With a country-wide quantum shift of demand from petrol cars to diesel cars, Honda too may launch diesel variants soon.

The company had earlier shown a 1.6 litre diesel-engine Civic for the European market, which is due to be production-ready soon. Could that mean a diesel Honda for India in the not-too-distant future?

Speaking to DNA, HSCI director, marketing, Seki Inaba said Honda is yet to take a call on what diesel engine will be launched here. The declaration will come “sooner rather than later”, he assured.

“The regulations, norms and customer demands of the Indian market vary from those in Europe. So, before a diesel engine is launched here, we have to ensure that it meets our standards as well the customers’ demands here,” Inaba said. He was in the city to unveil two car models on Friday.

Honda had suffered major setbacks twice in 2011, as Japan and recently Thailand - both countries supply critical parts for their cars here - bore the brunt of natural calamities.

Inaba took the wraps off a 2012 refresh model of their most popular offering in the country, the Honda City, as well as their first foray in the country’s fiercely competitive B+ segment, the Honda Brio. The Brio was initially launched in 2011, but production came to a standstill owing to the Thailand floods.

However, the company claims that of the 7,000-odd bookings that were made before calamity affected production at their Greater Noida Plant, Honda had managed to deliver 2,000 vehicles. HSCI says that the remaining deliveries will be made by March-end, as its plant runs at full capacity with two-shift production.

Natural disasters apart, the Japanese carmaker has seen sales decelerate, as it is currently the only player in the premium and super-premium segments that does not offer diesel variants.

The company had sold around 35,000 vehicles across the country during April 2011 - January 2012, as compared to 50,000 during the same period in the previous year, said a company official.

Gujarat, said zonal head Anil Baweja, “Is the third largest market for us in India, with 11% (5,500 cars) of our annual sales coming from here. To expand our network, we are currently surveying tier-II and III cities of the state as in the rest of the country to start dealerships in.”

Re: Diesel Hondas to hit Indian blacktop soon?

Honda India move's at a snail's pace in our country,on the contrary VW came and snatched the d-segment market from Honda.our country became diesel oriented overnight,i understand it will be difficult for automaker's to adopt that quickly to market reaction's.but if VW and it's group companies can do it why cant Honda.
anyway better late than never.

No plans till 2013, according to what I know. Plus, if Diesel prices are also de-regularized, then the focus will be back on petrol again. More fuel efficient petrol engines should be developed.

But even if they are de-regularised, it will still be cheaper by atleast 12-13 rs in any case.

Honda in diesel drive: Brio, City, SUV coming

Hit by the shift in Indian customer preference to diesel cars, Japanese auto major Honda on Friday unveiled a rollout plan for diesel variants of its models in the next financial year. “An all-new diesel engine will be adopted sequentially to new models starting in financial year 2013-14,” Takanobu Ito, CEO, Honda Motors, said in a press conference in Japan.
Honda, which has only petrol cars in India, has suffered due to the price differential between petrol and diesel.

The small car Brio helped salvage some sales, but even this tapered off in recent months with August seeing a 21% dip.

The first diesel car will be a sedan based on the Brio platform. “Honda will add sedan-type and utility-type models utilising the platform of the Brio, Honda’s strategic model for Asia,” Ito said.

A diesel SUV based on the City will be launched by 2015, pitted against the recently-launched Nissan Duster and the Ford Ecosport, which comes next year. Local sourcing and production will make the cars affordable, Ito said.

The company has big plans in the two-wheeler segment as well, and will enter the popular 100 cc segment in the first half of 2013, where it is posing stiff challenge to erstwhile partner Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj.

Worldwide, Honda is looking to double its car sales to 6 million vehicles in four years, and 25 million motorcycles.

Re: Honda in diesel drive: Brio, City, SUV coming

yes, its now or never. the have stuck to the policy of not buying engines from fiat like maruti / tata / etc etc blah blah do and hope common sense finally prevails else it will be curtains for them in india. Its not easy to survive with just petrol in India and depsite all odds the brand Honda has held them good.

just imagine if they come up with better engines in diesel, they are going to blow off the competition. And they are the only ones who are capable of giving fiat a fight wrt diesel engines.
