Mazda-Fiat finalize plans for next-gen Miata and Alfa

Fiat-Mazda had inked a deal last year about developing a new roadster jointly. Now, both the manufacturers have announced to this very effect that the new Alfa Romeo roadster will be based on the Mazda MX-5 and will be built at the latter’s Hiroshima plant. Though both the cars will have a rear-wheel drive layout and similar chassis, their design as also engines will most likely be different. Both the cars are expected to be in the showrooms in 2015.

Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A. (Fiat) and Mazda Motor Corporation (Mazda) have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development and manufacturing of a new roadster for the Mazda and Alfa Romeo marques based on Mazda’s next-generation MX-5 rear-wheel-drive architecture.

2017 Fiat 124 Spider to make its debut

The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider will make its debut later this year and will be available at dealerships in 2016. The new convertible will take on the Mazda MX-5 Miata and will share the rear-wheel drive platform with the model.

“It will not be a rebadged Miata. We will have our own style, our own stamp on it. There is a ton of heritage behind that. I think that just kind of puts the bow on the showroom for us and fills it out completely,” said Jason Stoicevich, head of Fiat Brand for North America.

The Fiat 124 will feature a different engine from the one on the MX-5 Miata. Sources say that Fiat will use a 1.4-litre four cylinder engine for its convertible, rather than Mazda’s 2.0-litre unit. The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider will be built alongside the MX-5 Miata at the Japanese automaker’s Hiroshima plant.

The pricing is expected to be in the same range as the 2016 MX-5 Miata.
