Electric cars in India to get govt subsidy of up to 20% of the cost of EV

In a significant development that promotes use of electric vehicles, the government has discussed direct subsidy of around Rs 1.4 lakh on purchase of new electric car. The subsidy will be based on battery capacity; Rs 10,000 for every kilowatt hour (KwH). Current generation e-cars usually have 14 KwH batteries, which translates into a subsidy of Rs 1.4 lakh.

Higher-end electric cars that have even bigger batteries can get subsidy of up to 4 lakh depending on KwH. This provision is being tabled to account for advanced e-vehicles that are yet to be launched in the Indian market. Total subsidy will have an upper limit of 20 per cent of the cost of the electric vehicle.

tata-electric-car-tigor-45x-india.jpg

Subsidy will also be provided for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Current generation electric two wheelers have 2 KwH batteries, whereas three-wheelers are powered by 4-4.5 KwH batteries. Going by the math, two-wheelers will get subsidy of around Rs 20,000, whereas three-wheelers will get around Rs 45,000.

However, not all electric vehicles will be subsidized, as it will significantly increase government spending. Government will provide subsidy only to a specific number of electric vehicles every year. This number is yet to be finalized.

tesla-model-x-suv-india-first-launch-price-6.jpg

Subsidy for electric vehicles is part of FAME-II initiative – Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicle in India. The scheme will offer subsidies for a period of 5 years. Total allocation has been increased from Rs 4,000 crore sanctioned earlier to Rs 5,500 crore, which has been approved by the UnionCabinet. Increased allocation aims to encourage more people to choose e-vehicles over petrol and diesel vehicles.

As per FAME-II, subsidy for electric vehicles will not be applicable for hybrids and trucks. Based on NITI Aayog recommendations, subsidy may initially be provided in the most polluted cities such as New Delhi, Bengaluru, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Agra, Lucknow, Patna, and Kanpur.

Re: The Electric Vehicle & Hybrid Scene in India

The need of the hour is developing EV charging infrastructure . Giving subsidy is pure waste of public fund. This year alone 4.02 million conventional vehicles were sold in India. If EV has to make any dent in the market to reduce pollution level , at least 2 million EVs need to be sold. Giving subsidy to them would be a huge burden of at least Rs. 280 billion! Even assuming 9% growth of conventional vehicles annually, EV adaption has to be at furious pace to have any effect on environment. It makes no sense to subsidize limited numbers of EVs. Effort should be made to build EV ecosystem and infrastructure instead.

Maruti WagonR electric car showcased in India – Launch in 2020 as Maruti’s first EV

MOVE mobility summit 2018 was inaugurated today by PM Narendra Modi. In attendance was Suzuki Motor Corporation’s 88 year old Chairman, Mr Osamu Suzuki. He revealed Maruti Suzuki’s future plans for electric mobility in India.

As part of the plan, it will be the WagonR which will be first to be launched as an electric car from Maruti Suzuki. This new 6th generation car is based on the new generation WagonR, which is already on sale in Japan.

2020-maruti-wagonr-electic-india-debut.jpg

2020 Maruti WagonR electric car is based on the HEARTECT platform, just like the Swift, Dzire, Baleno. This re-engineered platform will comply with crash test norms such as offset frontal and lateral impact that were introduced in October 2019. The new WagonR will also receive pedestrian protection safety among its safety features.

Tech specs of the WagonR electric are not yet revealed. But expect it to get a lithium-ion battery pack. Maruti Suzuki will be making their own battery-packs at the Gujarat plant. Bu 2030, Maruti Suzuki aims at selling 15 lakh electric cars and 35 lakh petrol / diesel cars in India by 2030.

2020-maruti-wagonr-ev-electric-india-launch.jpg

Speaking at the event today, Mr Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India said, “Maruti Suzuki is committed to bring Electric Vehicle in 2020. The testing in multiple terrains and climatic conditions will help us get valuable insights from real life driving conditions. With these tests, we are confident that our Electric Vehicle will be well accepted by our valued customers.”

Helping Maruti Suzuki in achieving this will be their new global partner, Toyota – who is a leader in electric vehicle and hybrid technology. Maruti will be using Toyota’s expertise to launch atleast 4 EVs / hybrids in India by 2021. This includes WagonR, Vitara Brezza SUV, Baleno and Corolla.

Ahead of electric car launch, Maruti is expected to launch the new generation WagonR with petrol engine. This is expected to take place later this year, or early next year. 2019 Maruti WagonR will be powered by a 1.0 liter, K Series, 3 cylinder petrol engine offering 68 PS power and 90 Nm torque. The same engine with CNG option will be capable of 59 PS power and 77 Nm torque. This engine will comply with BS VI emission norms and will be mated to a 5 speed manual transmission with AMT options.

Tata Nano Electric variant gets govt subsidy – Price benefit of Rs 1.24 lakh

Jayem Automotives, a Coimbatore based manufacturer is developing an electric version of the Tata Nano. To be called Jayem Neo, the new Tata Nano electric vehicle will be sold under the Jayem badge and will be exclusive as a commercial vehicle and will not be offered for private use.

Jayem Auto has secured a Government subsidy of Rs 1.24 lakhs for the rebranded Nano, putting the Neo in the same bracket as Mahindra e20 and Tata Tigor electric vehicle. An initial batch of 400 units will be released for sale to cab aggregator Ola for its Hyderabad fleet.

tata-nano-electric-subsidy-jayem-neo-india-taxi-2.jpg

Jayem Auto will be making some changes to the Neo both where its exterior design, interior makeup and powertrain are concerned. The Neo will receive most of the features that are offered in the petrol powered Nano with metallic paint options.

These are electric power steering, front power windows and central locking with remote. It will also get air conditioning, Bluetooth, AUX-IN and a 12 V power socket.

tata-nano-electric-subsidy-jayem-neo-india-taxi-1.jpg

Jayem Neo electric will be powered by a 48 Volt electric motor offering 23 bhp power. It will have kerb weight of 800 kgs. ARAI rating puts range at 200 kms on a single charge while with four passengers and air conditioning it will offer a range of 140 kms.

Where the Tata Nano is concerned, sales in recent months have been on the ebb. Production is only restricted to confirmed orders and since it cannot conform to new emission regulations or crash test norms, Tata Nano will be phased out soon.

2019 BMW i3 electric car spied testing in India with HR number plate

BMW India showcased the improved i3 electric city car at the Auto Expo earlier this year but did not make any announcement regarding the launch plans. There were reports that the luxury car maker is currently studying the Indian market to introduce its premium electric car and the recent spotting of a prototype on Indian roads confirms this development.

If everything goes well, the new BMW i3 may be launched in India sometime next year. Like several other manufacturers, BMW must be waiting to have some clarity on India’s electric vehicle related policies. With NEMMP 2020 and FAME schemes, things have started moving in the right direction but the conditions are not quite optimum yet for automakers to bet big on the Indian EV market.

The BMW i3 which received significant updates at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show is available in regular i3 and sportier i3S variants. The entry-level model is powered by an electric motor which produces 170 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The i3S boasts of a more powerful motor which has 184 hp and 270 Nm of torque.

The i3S differentiates itself from the regular i3 by means of a sports suspension that lowers the ride height by 0.3 inches and widens the track by 1.5 inches. The sporty variant also gets glossy black finish for the grille, new front and rear aprons, black roof, and 20-inch alloy wheels.

The i3S can accelerate from rest to ton in 6.9 seconds compared to the regular model’s time of 7.2 seconds. The top speed stands at 100 mph (160 kmph). The top-end model has a claimed range of 97 miles which can be extended up to 180 miles by opting for a range extender.

The BMW i3 and i3S come with a comprehensive list of ConnectedDrive features as well as safety systems. If BMW India launches the i3, the move could prompt other premium luxury car makers to bring in their respective rivals to the country.

Re: The Electric Vehicle & Hybrid Scene in India

It seems the technology has been there forever, but where is the infrastructure.

Even with conventional fuels, like CNG etc, still we don't have enough fuel stations. How will electricity reach that level and what is the charging times etc.???

And more important how will the range issue be tackled? Without minimum 350 - 400 kms range, EV is pure waste, not worth buying expensive electric vehicle purely for local commute.

I agree to @harishanker - CNG was introduced long back but still CNG filling stations are not available in many places especially rural areas. As such no point in pushing up electric vehicle when you dont have sufficient recharge stations. [roll]

Suzuki confirms petrol hybrid for S Cross, Vitara – Not on Swift, Celerio

As has been confirmed by Dale Wyatt, Suzuki’s UK Managing Director, plug in hybrid powertrains will be making their way onto the new Suzuki S-Cross and Vitara but not onto the Swift and Celerio. The next gen Suzuki S-Cross will go on sale in 2020, both in global markets and in India.

It is currently the second most expensive Maruti Suzuki model on sale in India (Ciaz is the most expensive). Next gen S-Cross, coming in with PHEV technology will make it even more attractive to buyers.

new-maruti-vitara-suv-india-suzuki-launch-6.jpg

The current Suzuki S-Cross, launched in early 2013 is seen with conventional petrol and diesel engine options with mild hybrid technology while the next gen model will be a plug in hybrid. Dale Wyatt has confirmed that greater emphasis is being paid to electrification in the coming years.

12 volt system will be used on smaller cars while larger models will receive 48 volt mild hybrid systems. However, for the next gen S-Cross and Vitara the company has other plans.

maruti-s-cross-delivery-india-launch-2.jpg

With diesel engine options losing their popularity not only in India but also in global markets, Suzuki dropped all its diesel models earlier this year. The next gen S-Cross will get only petrol, mild hybrid petrol electric and plug in hybrid petrol electric options.

In India, however, Maruti Suzuki could offer the E15A 1.5 liter diesel engine that will be BS VI compliant that is currently under development. The company has invested heavily into developing electric vehicles in India in association with Toyota. PHEVs in the country would be an expensive proposition while the lack of charging infrastructure could also pose a problem.

But at the same time, Suzuki has confirmed that they have started testing electric cars in India. The first electric car from Suzuki in India will be the Maruti WagonR. By 2030, the company aims to sell as many as 15 lakh electric cars a year in India.

Tata Tigor EV sedan handed over to govt officials in Maharashtra

A total of 10,000 Tata Tigor EVs will be handed over to government officials across India.

Devendra Fadnavis, CM of Maharashtra has handed over 5 Tigor EVs to PWD – Public Works Department. This is part the order size of EV Cars order placed through EESL. The ongoing project is part of an effort to make the state green.

Handover of electric vehicles to government offices is part of a country wide EV adoption plan. At present, the Tigor EV variant is being offered to EESL for purchase against a tender. Details regarding availability of Tata Tigor EV to the general public will be made known at a later date.

Tata Tigor EV offers a range of up to 120 kms and delivers a top speed of 130 kmph. Maharashtra government has allotted Rs 25,000 crore towards electric vehicles as made known by the CM during the handover ceremony at Mantralaya (state secretariat) today.

Last week the first allotment of Tata Tigor EVs was handed over to Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam (JBVNL). The delivery order comprised the first lot of 20 cars, a part of the 50 fleet order that Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) is supplying to JBVNL. The Union power ministry initiative encourages the use of EVs in government fleets.

Maharashtra government’s EV adoption policy and promotion entails spending of Rs 25,000-crore investment to encourage manufacturing. Use of electric vehicles is being encouraged in more govt departments.

The EV adoption plan will see EESL provide 1,000 such vehicles on rent in a phase-wise manner. The first charging stations (2 each) are being set up at Mantralaya (Mumbai) and Nagpur. The budget set aside not only entails acquiring an EV but also their components and charging equipment/infra. Maharashtra PWD department signed the MoU with EESL to procure e-vehicles on rent from central PSU in May 2018. The clause also caters to manufacturing and spare parts needs.
