There really are boy cars and girl cars according to a new survey. Or at least there are certain vehicles that are clearly more attractive to one gender than the other. And if you are trying to attract the opposite sex with your car, well, don’t bother.

The auto-industry researcher TrueCar.com released its latest demographic rundown of vehicles that are most popular with men or women. The study was based on more than 8 million retail purchases in 2010. The findings show stark differences in what men and women want from a car.

“The study shows that women car buyers are more cost-conscious and purchased fuel-efficient vehicles while male buyers were completely the opposite, purchasing vehicles that were either big and brawny, like a large truck, or chose a high-priced, high-performance vehicle,” said Jesse Toprak, an analyst with TrueCar.com.

Mini was the brand with the highest percentage of retail sales to women in 2010, followed by Kia and Honda. In 2009 Saturn and Kia tied for first and Mini came in third. There were fifteen brands with a female ratio over 40 percent in both 2009 and 2010, TrueCar said.

The highest percentage of male buyers primarily purchased exotic brands. There were five brands in 2010 at 10 percent or less for retail sales to women, including Ferrari, Lotus, Lamborghini, Maybach, and Rolls Royce. In 2009 there

The top ten models that had greater than 50 percent retail sales to females and at least 1,000annual retail sales in 2010 were: Volkswagen New Beetle, Kia Spectra, Nissan Rogue, Volkswagen Eos, Hyundai Entourage, Volvo S40, Jeep Compass, Honda CR-V, Nissan Sentra, and Hyundai Tucson.

The top ten models that had greater than 50 percent retail sales to males and at least 1,000 annual retail sales in 2010 were: Porsche 911, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Corvette, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-Series, BMW M3, Ford Ranger, Toyota Tundra, Dodge Ram and Audi S5, TrueCar said.

While there were no big surprises in the survey, I still feel like I see a lot of women driving pickup trucks like the F-150 or cars like the Audi S5 and BMW M3. But maybe they’re the exceptions and that’s what makes them so noticeable.

Below are charts illustrating the survey’s findings, including the average discounts for makes and models:

Definitely well worth an effort you have made.Amongst Indian women I have seen a majority of women prefer to drive hatch's. I searched on internet for the Indian women scenario, couldn't find anything fruitful.

Nice compilation. Volkswagen Beetle topping as women's favorite is a no surprise. It will be interesting to read a similar survey for India as well.

Hats off to you AMG , wonderful compilation! Can you try something like this for our country?

I think its a well known fact that women look only for cute looks , easy to drive , good driving position , cute colors , fuel efficient and easy maintenance.

Men look for powerful engine , all latest techs and features , comfort and luxury , rugged or manly looks.
