Re: Nissan Considering to Bring Datsun Brand To India

Some more news about Nissan-Datsun :

Nissan's reborn Datsun teases first model

Nissan has released a lone teaser image of the car that will spearhead the return of the Datsun brand in emerging markets all around the world.

The teaser images reveals little about the yet-unnamed car, but it confirms that it will wear a trapezoidal grille and angular headlights.

Nissan previously confirmed that the first Datsun-badged car of the 21st century will ride on a modified Lada Kalina platform. It will adopt a four-door body style and it will share almost no body parts with the nine-year old Kalina hatchback.

Cost-cutting is the name of the game with the upcoming Datsun so its interior will likely be even more basic than that of the no-frills Kalina.

Precise technical details are not available but Nissan has confirmed that the sedan's engines are being developed in Russia by Lada. Both gasoline- and diesel-burning mills are expected to be on offer.

Scheduled to make its public debut in 2014, the Datsun sedan will be built in the AvtoVAZ factory in Togliatti, Russia, and in a new facility located in Indonesia. It will be sold in Russia, Indonesia, India and South Africa for anywhere between $3,000 and $5,000 depending on what equipment it is packed with.

Since Datsun was exhumed exclusively to sell low-cost cars, Nissan does not plan on re-launching the brand in the United States or in Europe.

If the pricing is correct as per above source will we get an entry level sedan for less than 2 lacs in India .. [shock]

Cheers,
Anshuman

Re: Nissan Considering to Bring Datsun Brand To India

Global premiere of Datsun brand in India this July

Nissan is all set to bring back the Datsun brand after 32 years to markets like India, Russia, Indonesia and South Africa.

The world premiere of the new Datsun nameplate will be at the Kingdom of Dreams in New Delhi on July 15. Carlos Ghosn, global CEO of Renault-Nissan, is expected to unveil the first Datsun model, which will be a five-door hatchback in the sub-Rs-four-lakh category.

Nissan is banking heavily on the Datsun brand, which is targeted at the budget end of the market where there are huge volumes. The Japanese company expects to sell around 1,50,000 to 2,00,000 Datsun-badged cars in India every year. The new brand hopes to use a blend of affordability and aspiration to hook the vast Indian middle-class into buying Datsun cars. “India is a tough market and it’s not going to be a picnic for us, but we believe Datsun can crack it with modernity and a superior product.” said Vincent Cobee, corporate vice president, Datsun Business Unit.

As you can see from the teaser image, styling is going to be a key differentiator. The Datsun family face will sport a compact but prominent hexagonal grille to distinguish it from other brands. The rest of the car too is expected to come with some stand-out design elements without compromising on practicality.

Datsun’s first model for India will be a five-door hatchback (internal code: K2), which will be powered by the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol in the Micra. There is no diesel version planned. In terms of size, the Datsun will be almost as spacious as a Micra but considerably lighter. According to the Datsun team, performance is expected to be far superior to the competition, whilst fuel efficiency will match the best in-class.

Datsun is likely to share the same dealer network with Nissan but will have its own distinct showroom area built to the Datsun brand’s guidelines. However, in smaller towns, where there is no Nissan outlet, standalone Datsun dealerships could be set up.

The first Datsun hatchback is expected to hit Indian roads in mid-2014 with a base price of around Rs 3 lakh. Nissan is targeting the highly successful Hyundai i10 with what it says is a far superior value for money proposition.

Datsun will be great car for middle class

Now Datsun is coming to India. It will be great car for middle class people.

Regular Indian Autos Blog readers would know by now that the Datsun brand is all set to be launched in India. The launch of the brand is likely to take place in July this year, while the first Datsun car would likely roll out by early 2014.
Today, we bring you some more details about Datsun as a brand and how it hopes to be perceived by the people of India.
Vincent Cobee is the head for the Datsun project globally and he recently spoke to The Economic Times with regards to the brand. Here is what he had to say.

‘Dreams, Access, Trust’ is what the first three letters of Datsun stands for.

The Datsun brand: Who are their customers?
Mr. Cobee strongly believes that the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) are complex markets and that the “winners in each of the markets” (the best selling car in a particular segment in a particular market) are also different. The growth in BRICS comes from a “new emerging middle class” with different customer value and needs in their cars. Mr. Cobee believes that Datsun will address this core segment.
About the Datsun car
Mr. Cobee says that the Datsun car (we think he is referring to the K2 hatchback mainly, which will be the first Datsun in India) will be an “aspirational, modern, reliable car with best-in-class space and efficiency with low cost of ownership”. He further goes to say that India will not be sold the regulatory norms of the US. As a result, Datsun will have decreased features, however, the relevant features for the market will continue to be there.

This is a rendering of the Datsun K2 which will be the first product to roll out early next year. Engine and powertrain is likely to be carried over from the Nissan Micra.

What Datsun promises as a brand
Mr. Cobee believes that a car will be the biggest purchase for the emerging middle class customers he has in mind. He says that one cannot play heads and tails with somebody’s two years’ income. As a result, the Datsun will be a “robust, straightforward brand with a celebratory spin; It will be a mainstream and not very polarising product that will turn the market on its head”. As a Datsun customer may be a first time car buyer, Mr. Cobee says that the car, customer handling at the dealer and the after-sales service must make the customer feel good about his choice of car.
Mr. Cobee also says that the first three letters of Datsun stand for “Dream, Access and Trust” and are three pillars on which the brand is built.

Official- Datsun to launch in India on July15th.

Datsun is coming soon. All you people get ready.

Datsun, the budget brand owned by Nissan, had announced last year that it will make cars again.

The brand is targeting emerging markets like India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa. The first Datsun products are a couple of hatchbacks (codenamed I2 and K2) which are being developed at Renault-Nissan’s technical center in Chennai.
Through its ‘block your date’ email, the company has just announced that the “Datsun World Premiere” will take place on July 15th.

We are strongly inclined to think that Datsun would stage the world premiere of its first hatchback which is codenamed K2 on July 15. This is of course besides the relaunch of the brand itself.

Sources tell Indian Autos Blog that the K2 will be sold in Datsun’s target markets with the exception of Russia where the first product will be a Lada Granta based sedan.

The K2 is based on the V platform which also underpins Nissan’s global models Sunny, Micra and Note. The lightweight platform is heavily localized in India enabling Datsun to leverage the cost advantage.

As of now, only petrol engines are in the running.

The K2 will be positioned below the upcoming low cost Micra as a competitor to cars like the Chevrolet Beat, Hyundai Eon, Maruti Wagon R, etc.

The global launch of the Datsun brand is expected to be presided by Mr. Carlos Ghosn himself, the CEO of Renault-Nissan Alliance. As usual, we will be presenting you live reportage from ground zero.

Datsun’s selection of India to stage their comeback speaks volumes about how important a role the nation plays in the company’s strategy.

Re: Nissan Considering to Bring Datsun Brand To India

Datsun K2 rendered; likely to be offered only with petrol engines

The Datsun K2 is the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s new mass market car.It will be launched at a function in Delhi on July 15, most likely in the presence of CEO Carlos Ghosn. The Alliance aims to sell between 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh cars in the Indian market annually, basically aiming make a dent in the sales of the Hyundai i10 and Maruti Suzuki Alto.

The Datsun K2 is based on the previous generation Micra but is a five door car and features a completely revised design thanks to their access to a large parts bin across both manufacturers. Most prominent in the picture is a hexagonal grille with the Datsun logo in the middle. The report suggests that the car has other stand out elements that will help differentiate from its competition.

However, the biggest surprise is that the Datsun car is likely to be offered only with a petrol mill. This is expected to the 1.2-litre engine from the standard Micra but with a smaller output and torque figure. It is expected to have good fuel efficiency due to being 100kgs lighter than the Micra.

Thanks to certain restrictions arising from the design of the vehicle, it believed that there is not enough space to fit the 1.5-litre K9K diesel (the Alliance’s smallest oil burner). Since a diesel powered car is almost a lakh higher than its petrol equivalent, cost is major factor in the Datsun K2 not getting a diesel mill. The K2 will most likely be sold through existing Nissan dealerships in major towns and cities, however, smaller locations that have no Nissan dealership, will get a standalone Datsun showroom.

We expect that Nissan will price the Datsun K2 in the range of Rs 2.5-Rs 4.5 lakh (ex-showroom) and this puts it in competition with the Hyundai Eon, Alto 800 at the lower end and Hyundai i10 at the higher end.

Re: Nissan Considering to Bring Datsun Brand To India

Datsun plan to launch three cars in India by 2015

Nissan India will unveil the first car its budget brand Datsun in India on July 15, and the company has three cars already lined up to be launched in India by 2015. All three models are expected to be unveiled during the 2014 Indian Auto Expo. The Datsun brand name is being revived by Nissan for markets like India, Russia, Indonesia and South Africa after three decades.

The first car to surface from the Datsun brand will be an i10 competing hatchback codenamed K2 and will be placed right below the new Micra. Priced at 3-4 lakh, the car will be based on the previous generation K12 Micra platform but will be smaller yet with more spacious interiors. The car will also get an all-new exterior design.

Datsun is also planning an A-Segment hatchback priced between 2-3 lakh to compete with the Hyundai Eon and the market leading Maruti Suzuki Alto 800. Both these cars are expected to be powered by petrol engines though the engine specifications are yet to be revealed.

A B-segment MPV is also in the pipeline from Datsun and will be the first car from the brand to be powered by both petrol and diesel mills. The car is likely to get the 1.2-litre engine and the 1.5-litre K9K engine, both found on the current Nissan Micra. The company has moderate market expectations form the model and aims to sell an average of 1500 units a month.

Datsun cars will be sold and manufactured by Nissan’s existing dealership and service centre chain. The models will be manufactured at the Nissan-Renault production unit in Oragadam, Chennai and the models will be exported to the various markets from India. All Datsun models will be positioned below their corresponding Nissan models.

Re: Nissan Considering to Bring Datsun Brand To India

Datsun K2 to feature HM Ambassador-like bench seat up front

Datsun is all set to re-enter the market on July 15 and the first cars are expected on the roads next year.

The Datsun finalized for India, which is codenamed the K2, would be based on the Nissan Micra platform. This includes the sharing of its 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine, albeit in a different state of tune (possibly to squeeze out a higher fuel economy).

Datsun wants to ensure that the K2 is as spacious as it can get. To give you an example, the wheels of the car are pushed outward to their maximum extent, thereby liberating a few millimeters of shoulder room as the door structures can be pushed outward too.

The K2 is likely to sport a bench like seat up front, capable of seating 3 people. The K2 would either feature a single bench (as seen on the yesteryear HM Ambassador) or there would be no pause between the driver and passenger seats (something like the Nissan Dayz which was launched in Japan).

Maybe Datsun is marketing them as emergency seats in case you’ve an additional person on a trip, for a relatively short distance. The same strategy on the Mahindra Quanto though it is absolutely unsafe.

One of our sources had told us that Nissan intends to file a patent for a ‘new sort of front seats with a dash-mounted gearlever’.

If this turns out to be true, we think Nissan (Datsun) could have a valid point here. As the brand is looking forward to markets like Indonesia and Russia which bear similarity to the Indian market when it comes to car occupancy, Datsun could be starting a trend that was lost long ago.

Changing the perception people have for a bench seat at the front will prove to be a bit of a challenge and the question of safety for the middle occupant would also have to be addressed.
