Volkswagen New Amarok scores 3 stars in Latin NCAP crash test

The Volkswagen New Amarok, produced in Argentina, achieved three stars. The New Amarok offers 6 airbags and ESC as standard, achieved 80.87% in Adult Occupant, 87.08% in Child Occupant, 62.18% in Pedestrian Protection and Vulnerable Road Users and 66.28% in Safety Assist. It was tested in frontal impact, side impact, side pole impact, whiplash, pedestrian protection, ESC, AEB interurban and LSS.

The frontal impact showed stable structure and stable footwell area, marginal chest protection for the driver and adequate for the passenger’s chest. Side impact protection showed good protection thanks to the standard side body and curtain airbags, and pole impact test showed adequate chest protection for the adult. Whiplash protection was marginal. Both child occupants were installed rearward facing using ISOFIX anchorages, following global best practices, showing overall good protection. Pedestrian protection showed mostly adequate and good protection for the head, and good protection for upper and lower leg. The New Amarok offers Forward Collision Warning as optional that showed good performance. However, as this is not an active braking system it could not score higher in the AEB assessment (the system issues an alert, but the vehicle does not brake on its own). The driving assistance technologies include Lane Departure Warning that could not achieve higher score as this is not an active system (the system issues an alert, but the vehicle does not correct its trajectory on its own). By improving the AEB and LSS scores thru adding active systems with good performance and meeting Latin NCAP’s availability requirements, the model could achieve top star rating. The model was tested as a voluntary decision of the manufacturer.

The Volkswagen New Amarok tested by Latin NCAP is not the same New Amarok as in other markets worldwide. Latin America’s New Amarok is unique to the region and not sold anywhere else, that is why the three stars rating is only valid for this model in Latin America.

Suzuki Swift ADAS trim gets 1 star rating in ANCAP crash test

The 2024 Suzuki Swift ADAS variant has received a 1-star rating in the Australian NCAP crash tests. This variant, which includes Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), is available for sale in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Interestingly, the same Swift model scored 3 out of 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) tests are divided into four parts — Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable Road User Protection and Safety Assist. The tests revealed that Swift 18.88 out of 40 points or managing 47 per cent in Adult Occupant Protection. It fared slightly better in Child Occupant Protection as it received 29.24 out of 49 points or 59 per cent. Lastly, in the Vulnerable Road User Protection and Safety Assist sections, Swift scored 48.40 out of 63 and 9.78 out of 18.

After releasing the report, ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg said, “Earlier this year ANCAP was informed of physical differences between locally-supplied Swift models and those supplied in Europe so we conducted a range of additional crash tests on local vehicles and found some areas of concern.

Maruti Suzuki has not yet launched the Swift ADAS trim or the hybrid version in India. Currently, the Swift is powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Z Series engine which has an output of 80.4 bhp at 5,700 rpm and 111.7 Nm at 4,300 rpm. It is available in two transmissions — a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. According to Maruti Suzuki, the manual returns 24.8 kmpl and 25.75 kmpl for the AMT. The new Swift also gets a CNG trim that produces 69 bhp at 5,700 rpm and 101.8 Nm at 2,900 rpm. Maruti claims a mileage of 32.85 km/kg.

Made-in-India Maruti Suzuki Fronx secures 4-star Japan NCAP safety rating

maruti_suzuki_fronx_jncap_1.jpg

The Fronx is one of several cars made in India and exported to other countries, including the brand’s home country. The Japan NCAP safety rating for the Fronx sold there is out, and it has a fairly impressive score of 4 out of 5 stars. However, the Fronx sold in Japan does come with a few additional features, like an all-wheel drive system and level-2 ADAS. The Fronx hasn’t been tested by GNCAP or BNCAP just yet.

In terms of the score itself, the Fronx scored 163.75 out of 193.8 points in the Overall Safety Performance, which is an impressive 84 per cent. In the Preventive Safety Performance, again, the Fronx was impressive once again with a total score of 79.42 out of 85.8 points, which amounts to 92 per cent. In the Collision Safety Performance, it scored 76.33 out of 100 points and in the Automatic Emergency Call System, the Fronx produced a perfect 8 out of 8 score.

Furthermore, it was tested for pedestrian safety as well, wherein it scored Level 3/5 for pedestrian head protection and a Level 5 for pedestrian leg protection, which again is a good score. When it comes to Autonomous Emergency braking, the Fronx scored a perfect Level 5 rating, and Level 3 for the intersection part of the test. It remains to be seen if the Fronx sold in India can secure a similar score, since it lacks the aforementioned additional safety equipment.
