Disappointingly low scores for Hyundai Creta & i20 in latest Crash Tests

fcahhook_hyundai-i20-global-ncap-crash-test_625x300_12_April_22.jpg
The segment-leading Hyundai Creta compact SUV and its sibling - the pricey and well-loaded Hyundai i20 hatch - have scored 3 stars for adult occupant protection from Global NCAP in the latest round of Safer Cars for India crash tests. The Hyundai Creta has just barely made it to the 3 Star mark, much like its platform-sharing cousin the Kia Seltos had in a similar test conducted in 2020. The Creta has managed a better score for child occupant protection though with three stars, as the Seltos had only managed two.

9gpt6kns_hyundai-creta-global-ncap-crash-test_625x300_12_April_22.jpg

Yet, the Creta's body shell has been rated unstable, with a higher risk of likely injury to the legs and feet of the front passengers. Its lack of standard safety equipment like ISOFIX child seat anchorages, 3-point seatbelts, and ESC (electronic stability control) for all passengers, also pulled down its scores. A lot of this is available in higher variants, but the cars tested are always in their basic or entry variant. The Creta also has no side head impact protection as standard. And do remember that the Hyundai Creta is still the highest-selling model in the crowded compact SUV segment.

The Hyundai i20 was also tested in its base variant - with dual airbags and ABS. It too has shown an unstable structure, and worryingly also exhibits a risk of the driver side airbag not completely protecting the driver's head and chest. The Hyundai i20 did score a bit better on child safety with 36.89 /49 points - but it has also meant only a 3 Star rating for child occupant protection. This rating holds only if the appropriate car seats are used for child passengers. The i20 does get ISOFIX anchorages but Global NCAP is again disappointed that the i20 has a lap belt for the middle rear passenger, and three-point seatbelts are not standard. The i20 also doesn't have ESC or side head impact protection as standard - unlike the European spec Hyundai i20 that gets all that, multiple airbags, and even autonomous emergency braking as standard.

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General, Global NCAP said, "Although the overall star rating of these models might seem reasonable, the continued reluctance of manufacturers like Hyundai to equip safety systems such as ESC and side body and head protection airbags as a basic requirement in India is disappointing." Queries on both crash tests sent by carandbike to Hyundai India have as yet gone unanswered.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser was among the cars tested in the latest round of Global NCAP’s crash tests. The compact SUV secured a 4-star rating for adult occupant protection and scored 3 stars for child occupant protection.

The Urban Cruiser tested by Global NCAP was equipped with safety features like dual airbags, ABS, front seatbelt pretensioners and ISOFIX mounts.

The base trim of the Toyota Urban Cruiser that underwent testing tipped the scales at 1324 kg. It was equipped with standard safety features like dual-airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, ISOFIX child seat anchorage and four-channel antilock braking system (ABS). However, the SUV has been crash tested only for frontal offset and it's yet to be tested for side impact.

PHOTO-Kia-EV6-oblique-pole-B.png

The Kia EV6 has earned a five-star safety rating from independent crash test body ANCAP, matching its Hyundai Ioniq 5 platform mate.

The EV6 scored 90 per cent for adult occupant protection, 87 per cent for child occupant protection, 64 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 88 per cent for safety assist.

ANCAP’s rating applies to all three versions of the EV6 sold in Australia.

“The Kia EV6 is equipped with the range of collision avoidance systems we’ve come to expect in today’s five star cars, and it performed particularly well for its ability to prevent collisions with cyclists, and oncoming vehicles in avoidance tests simulating intersection turns,” said ANCAP CEO, Carla Hoorweg.

It joins a long list of electric cars to have earned five-star ratings, including but not limited to the Ioniq 5, BMW iX, and MG ZS EV.

Kia Carens scores 3-Star safety rating in Global NCAP crash test

The all-new Kia Carens has scored a 3-Star safety rating for adult occupant protection and also a 3-Star rating for child occupant protection in the latest round of the Global NCAP crash test. According to the testing agency, the made-in-India Kia Carens was tested in its most basic safety specification, fitted with six airbags, which include two frontal units, two side body and two side head protection airbags.
Kia-Carens-Global-NCAP-2-768x432.jpg

Moreover, ESC is a standard fitment in this base-spec model. The Carens was also side-impact tested and fulfilled the UN95 regulatory requirement. It scored 9.30 points out of a total of 17 points for adult occupant safety, bagging a 3-Star safety rating in this category. For child occupant protection, it earned 30.99 points out of a total of 49 points, thus achieving a 3-Star rating in this category.

The bodyshell of the new Kia Carens was rated unstable and it was incapable of withstanding further loadings. During the assessment, this MPV demonstrated marginal protection to the driver’s chest and weak protection to the driver’s feet. Global NCAP noted that the model is still sold with a lap belt in the rear central seating position instead of a three-point seatbelt.

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP said, “Global NCAP welcomes Kia’s decision to make six airbags a standard fit in the Carens ahead of a regulatory requirement. However, we expected a better performance from this model. It remains a cause for concern that global car brands such as Kia, which normally achieve 5-star ratings in other markets, are still not reaching this level in India.”

It is worth mentioning that the Kia Carens was the last product to be tested under the Global NCAP’s current test protocols. David Ward, President of the Towards Zero Foundation said, “The evolution of our testing requirements under the new protocols which come into effect from next month are intended to take the progress we have seen over the last eight years to the next level.”

Mahindra XUV700 bags Global NCAP’s Safer Choice award

20220623111043_20211110034720_Mahindra_XUV700_GNCAP.jpg
The Mahindra XUV700 has received the ‘Safer Choice’ award from Global NCAP. The SUV was crash tested in November last year and it secured a full 5-star rating for adult occupant protection and four stars for child occupation protection. With 57.69 points out of a possible 66, it had the highest combined rating under the ‘Safer Cars For India’ campaign. Mahindra voluntarily sent the model for further testing, which met both pedestrian protection and ESC requirements.

This makes the XUV700 the second model in Mahindra’s line-up to get this award after the XUV300 compact SUV.

What is the Safer Choice award?
Global NCAP has been testing cars for the Indian market since 2014 under its ‘Safer Cars For India’ programme. In the previous round of tests, GNCAP achieved the milestone of testing over 50 cars under the programme.

Global NCAP announced the ‘Safer Choice’ award at the Auto Expo in 2018. According to Global NCAP, this is an accolade for cars (and their respective manufacturers) that provide the highest level of safety. To get this award, the car must achieve a 5-star rating for Adult Occupant Protection and at least a 4-star rating in Child Occupant Protection. Additionally, it must have ESC (at least as an option on all variants) and it should be available as a stand-alone feature and not as part of a bundle or package. Moreover, it should be equipped on at least 20 percent of the cars sold in the country two years after the model went on sale. It should also meet pedestrian protection requirements in accordance with United Nations (UN) regulations UN127 or GTR9.

Speaking about the Safer Choice award for the XUV700, Alejandro Furas, secretary of Global NCAP, said “Global NCAP congratulates Mahindra on its second ‘Safer Choice’ Award and for the wider inclusion of ADAS technologies.”

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso scores 3-star in crash test for South Africa model

Untitled-design-30.jpg

Maruti Suzuki’s entry-level hatchback has scored three stars in the Global NCAP crash test. This car was tested for built for the South African market but it was manufactured in India. This is in stark contrast with the scoring of the model that was tested for the Indian market, which scored zero-rating for adult occupants

The first time the model was tested by Global NCAP was in 2020 for the Indian market. It scored a zero star rating for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. Global NCAP conducted the test following reports that the version of the car sold in South Africa had a better safety performance. The model that was crash tested for South African market was 985 kg whereas the one sold in India weighed in at 980 kg. The one tested for the Indian market had one airbag.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso in South Africa is fitted with two airbags as standard. According to the crash test agency, during the assessment the S-Presso structure demonstrated an unstable performance and the driver’s chest showed a weak protection level, marginally avoiding a two-star rating. Levels of child occupant protection showed the same performance as the version sold in India. The lack of ISOFIX anchorages, lack of a three-point belt in all seating positions, and the decision of Suzuki Maruti not to recommend a Child Restraint System (CRS) contribute to the poor child occupant protection score

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP said, “The safety performance of the S-Presso in South Africa has been far from satisfactory and claims of improvement are not reflected in levels of child occupant protection which remain the same as the Indian version we tested in 2020. There has been significant progress with vehicle safety in the Indian market with a welcome requirement for the fitment of six airbags as standard. We hope that Maruti Suzuki will not apply a double standard for the vehicles they sell in Africa compared to those sold in India.”

BMW i4 secures Four stars in Euro NCAP Crash tests

BMW-i4-Euro-NCAP-crash-test-2-1536x1024.jpg

In the latest round of crash tests conducted by Euro NCAP the BMW i4 scored a four-star crash protection rating. The sedan’s rating was pulled down owing to it missing out on some crash avoidance points securing just 64 per cent of the total points. “BMW’s battery electric compact executive car i4 shows that luxury does not always means better safety performance. Equipped with a similar sensor set to the 3 Series tested in 2019, the gran sedan missed out on some critical crash avoidance points and achieved a 4-star rating,” Euro NCAP said.

As for the video attached above, it shows the BMW i4 being subjected to a frontal impact test at 50 mph (31 mph) by smashing into a deformable barrier that was traveling at the same speed. Another crash test involves colliding with a rigid barrier. The evaluations continue with a side mobile barrier hitting the vehicle at 60 km/h (37 mph) before a side pole test pushing the vehicle toward the metal bar at 32 km/h (20 mph).

Safety Assist seemed to be the Achilles’ heel for the BMW i4 given the 64% rating. The tests involved testing the AEB with the car in front as well as evaluating the accuracy of the lane-keeping assist system.

New-Gen Hyundai Tucson scores Three-Stars in Latin NCAP crash test

small_2_2022_09_01_T11_56_36_113_Z_33d83c03e5.jpg

The Latin New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) has crash tested the new-gen Hyundai Tucson. The SUV bagged just three-stars in the Latin NCAP crash test rating despite being equipped with six-airbags. The variants sold in India do come equipped with six-airbags, but few markets also get other lower variants of the Hyundai Tucson which get just two airbags which performed even worse, scoring zero-stars in the Latin NCAP test. The new version of the Tucson was tested for frontal impact, side impact, whiplash and pedestrian protection.
1_2022_09_01_T11_56_51_255_Z_d0ed4f0972.jpg

The SUV scored 81.61 per cent in Adult Occupant protection, 69.53 per cent in Child Occupant protection, 48.40 per cent in Pedestrian Protection and in Vulnerable Road Users area its scored 55.81 per cent for safety assist. These safety features showed just about satisfactory performance despite Hyundai updating the ISOFIX-size marking and making three-point belts standard among other improvements. The Advanced Driver Assist (ADAS) features like Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Support Systems and Road Edge Detection were also tested and showed good performance. That said, these variants do not contribute to the ratings and as they are optional in most of the markets and contribute marginally to Tucson sales.

Latin NCAP said that the lack of side curtain airbags as standard limited the score and better performance in Adult Occupant Protection. The lack of ISOFIX anchorage points along with standard lap belts are basic requirements of Child Protection Standards by the Latin NCAP. Pedestrian Protection was rated as average, however it showed poor protection for some areas of the upper legs. Safety Assist box showed poor results as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is not standard as well as speed limitation.

2022 Ford Everest scores 5 Star in ANCAP Crash test

large.png

The Ford Everest was introduced in Australia and New Zealand in August 2022. This ANCAP safety rating for the Ford Everest is based on testing of the Ford Ranger. ANCAP was provided with technical information to show that the test results of the Ranger are also applicable to the Everest. This ANCAP safety rating applies to all variants of the Ford Everest.
FireShot Capture 079 - - s3.amazonaws.com.png

Dual frontal, side chest-protecting and side head-protecting (curtain) airbags for all three seating rows, and driver and passenger knee airbags are standard. A centre airbag which provides added protection to front seat occupants in side impact crashes is also standard.

Autonomous emergency braking (Car-to-Car, Vulnerable Road User, Junction Assist and AEB Backover) as well as a lane support system with lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW) and emergency lane keeping (ELK), and an advanced speed assistance system (SAS) are standard features on all Ford Everest models.

A full list of safety features and technologies can be viewed within the Technical Report (see download link).

(2022 Ford Endeavour is not actually crash tested by ANCAP. Instead, they crash tested a Ford Ranger pickup truck. Ford Ranger is based on the same platform as Ford Endeavour and Ford Everest and also gets the same set of body panels up front and technical details. Hence, this ANCAP rating applies to a whole range of vehicles based on this platform.)

Nissan Qashqai Mild Hybrid scores 2.5 stars in Green NCAP Crash Tests

Nissan.png

Tested here is the Nissan Qashqai, equipped with the 1.3 liter turbocharged petrol engine. The car demonstrates a well-functioning pollutant control system with potential to improve especially for the currently unregulated NH3 emissions. The good laboratory result can also be easily reproduced on the street, significantly lowering the impact of combustion engine vehicles on air quality.

Like other SUVs, the Qashqai struggles with increased fuel consumption during dynamic highway driving and higher speeds. With 6.7 l/100 km in the real world On-Road test, however, the number is a relatively good value for a petrol SUV. Closely related to the fuel demand are also the greenhouse gas emissions, which don't help the Qashqai reach more than 2½ Green stars with an Weighted Overall Index of 4.3.

2022 Honda Civic gets five-star Euro NCAP safety rating

2022-civic-hatchback-hybrid-ehev-19-e1669085734862-850x490.jpg

The new Honda Civic e:HEV (or Civic Hybrid as it’s better known here) has been awarded the maximum five-star rating after a series of tests by Euro NCAP. Honda is striving for zero traffic collision fatalities involving its vehicles by 2050. In doing so, the company aims not just to reduce fatal collisions but eliminate risks that lead to collisions.

2022-civic-hatchback-hybrid-ehev-20-850x638.jpg
In order to meet strict Euro NCAP crash impact safety standards for Adult Occupant Protection, the Civic Hybrid incorporates several structural braces to enhance the vehicle’s passive safety. This includes additional front door stiffeners and rear wheel arch frames to improve side impact performance. For the same purpose, a full-width brace supports the floor and resin bulkhead to limit deformation in the event of a head-on or offset frontal collision.

Aside from Adult Occupant Protection, the Civic Hybrid also scored well in the Child Occupant Protection category thanks to ISOFIX mounting points that conform to the latest European i-Size standards. Pedestrian protection was also considered with the fitment of newly designed front bumper beam safety plates. They’re designed to absorb impact energy to reduce the risk of leg fractures and knee ligament damage for pedestrians in a collision.

Further enhancing pedestrian protection is a pop-up hood that’s lined with an embossed membrane structure under the hood surface. Its high-energy absorption quality greatly reduces the risk of severe injury if a pedestrian’s head strikes the front hood.

The European Civic Hybrid incorporates 11 airbags including knee airbags for both front occupants. A front centre airbag is fitted for the first time to prevent collision between the driver and front passenger during a side impact. In Malaysia, all variants of the Civic sedan including the Civic Hybrid are fitted with six airbags. It misses out on the front kneebags, rear side air bags and the front centre airbag.

Active safety has also been improved with a wider 100-degree camera and a high-speed processor capable of identifying road lines and detecting motorcycles and cyclists quicker and more accurately, even in dark conditions. The Honda Sensing driver assistance system now also incorporates new sonar sensors that are more accurate than the previous millimetre wave radar in detecting non-metallic objects such as glass and walls.
