Bajaj Auto will come out with the most expensive and technologically advanced bike in the 100 cc segment in January, a top company official said today.

"Besides being the most expensive motorcycle in the 100CC segment, it will also be technologically most advanced bike," Bajaj Auto President (Motorcycle Business) K Srinivas told reporters here.

However, he refused to reveal the price tag, saying the price is not the news, but technologically most advanced is.

Currently, Bajaj Auto sells 100cc bikes under the Platina and Discover range, which are priced between Rs 38,990-44,497.

The company had claimed in September that its Discover model had overtaken Hero MotoCorp's Splendour as the world's largest selling motorcycle, with sales of 1.22 lakh against Splendour's 1.21 lakh.

On Bajaj's performance, Srinivas said the company has registered an increase in growth despite a minus one per growth in the industry. In the second quarter of the current fiscal, its market share stood at 27 per cent.

It was also encouraging to note that sales had grown by six per cent in the last seven days being the festive season, a good sign as far as the entire industry was concerned, he said.

While Bajaj Auto had announced that January 2013 would be when it would launch the most technologically advanced 100cc commuter motorcycle in India, we now seem to have a date on which this motorcycle would break cover. The folks at BikeIndia report that Bajaj Auto will launch its spanking new 100cc motorcycle on the 7th of January 2013. The motorcycle does have some hype surrounding it given that Rajiv Bajaj, the Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, has repeatedly emphasized that it will the most advanced 100cc motorcycle to be sold in India.

Bajaj Auto launches new Discover 100T at Rs 50,500

India's second largest motorcycle manufacturer, Bajaj Auto on Monday launched a new 100 cc mass market motorcycle Discover 100 T at the upper end of the mass market segment priced at Rs 50,500 ex-showroom New Delhi.

The Discover 100 Tourer will take on likes the Hero MotoCorp's Passion and Honda Motorcycle's Dream Yuga, which will help Bajaj Auto increase its presence in the mass market space, where it currently enjoys 20 per cent market share.

Powered by Bajaj Auto's patented 4-valve DTS-i technology, the Discover 100 T delivers 10.2 ps of power and is 30 per cent more powerful than other motorcycles in the category and the company claims this bike delivers a fuel efficiency of 87 kilometer per litre.

K Srinivas, president (Motorcycle buisiness), Bajaj Auto said, "The steady growth of the more expensive 100 cc bikes at the cost of the cheaper models is a clear evidence of this. The Discover 100T delivers power of 125 cc motorcycle and mileage of a 100 cc."

The mass market motorcycle segment contributes about 65 per cent of the overall market. With executive segment contributing 19 per cent and the sports bike segment 16 per cent.

The company says, the mass market segment wherein 5.5 lakh units are sold every month is getting further dissected into sub-segments namely A1, wherein bikes like Platina and Hero HF are sold between Rs 36,000 to Rs 40,000, A2 segment which includes bikes like Splendor, Passion and its own Discover 100 Rs 41,000 to Rs 45,000 and the A3 segment has motorcycles like Honda Motorcycles Dream Yuga and Hero MotoCorp's Passion Pro, which are priced between Rs 46,000 to Rs 51,000 at present.

And the Discover T is positoned in this A3 segment, where Bajaj Auto has no products available. Bajaj Auto is hoping to sell around 40,000 to 45,000 units per month of this new Discover 100T.

The company says with the existing Discover 100, it has only 20 per cent market share in the mass market category, with the launch of Discover 100T, it is hoping to increase its market share in the segment to 30 per cent within the next couple of years.

Bajaj Auto has developed this model with a minimal expenditure of Rs 5 crore to Rs 6 crore, but it is based on an all new Discover platform, which already has spawned out Discover 125 ST. Bajaj Auto invested Rs 25 crore to Rs 30 crore on this new Discover platform. The company is planning to introduce one more motorcycle on this platform in the calendar year 2013.

Two-wheeler major Bajaj Auto is planning to export its latest 100cc motorcycle "Discover 100T" (Tourer) after 4-5 months as part of strategy to ramp up product offerings in overseas market, a company official said.

"Initially we are looking at the domestic market. May be after four or five months, we will be looking exports of this motorcycle", Bajaj Auto General Manager(Sales), R Chandrasekar told reporters here.

The company has been shipping some of its products including the Pulsar and Discover models to markets like South Africa, Latin America and Indonesia.

"We will be looking at third world countries. Indonesia, South Africa and some Far East markets", he said.

The company today launched the Discover 100T. Priced at Rs 51,979 (ex-showroom Chennai), Discover 100T is comparatively costlier than the existing Discover 100cc model by about Rs 7,000.

India’s best looking 100cc bike is Bajaj’s new Discover 100T.

The Discover commuter bikes have always represented a runaway success story for Bajaj. While the Pulsars address customers looking for sporty performance, the Discover series looks at more conservative buyers, reluctant to buy less fuel-efficient, larger capacity motorcycles. We’ve seen several bikes launch under the Discover umbrella, the latest being Bajaj’s well received Discover 125 ST, which is already selling about 40,000 units a month across India.

The Discover 100T (Tourer) is a commuter bike that borrows design cues from this older sibling. Easily the best looking 100cc bike in India today, the T houses an attractive headlight unit encased within a flared bikini fairing. Its handsome analogue speedometer and fuel-gauge sit under a tinted visor and are easy to read on the fly. Palm grips on the 100T are comfortable while the bike’s Bajaj typical switches feel built-to-last and work with crisp feel. A pass-light switch is also included. The rear-view mirrors show-off unique design and provide a wide field of vision. The 100T comes with exotic looking, slim-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels. Its engine, exhaust and several other lower parts are smartly finished in black.

The Discover 100T uses Bajaj’s proven twin-spark, DTS-i technology and houses a four-stroke, 102cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine, this breathing through four-valves. This is a more than desirably spec’d engine for the 100cc segment. The button-started T has been provided with an auto-choke system for easy starts in all weather conditions. It puts out a hefty power output of 10.1bhp at 9000rpm, while maximum torque is 0.94kgm at 6500rpm. Power is transferred to the rear wheel via a smooth, five-speed, all-up shifted heel-and-toe operated gearbox. The new Bajaj bike clutch offers a nice, light and positive feel that is certain to prove a boon in crowded city riding conditions.

Our brief test-ride confirmed throttle response is good for a 100cc, but do look out for more performance details in a full review in our February 2013 issue. Bajaj claims a 100kph top speed, and we’ve little reason to doubt the Discover 100T will easily match-up and thrill, having now experienced its peppy feel. The T should offer quick acceleration too, and be among the fastest 100cc motorcycles you can buy in India today.

The latest Discover deploys a semi, double-cradle steel frame with telescopic fork front suspension and a set of gas-charged rear shock absorbers, bolted onto a rectangular swingarm. The upright 100T riding position is perfect for city commutes and is complemented by a well cushioned seat that should also prove apt for long hours on the saddle. Ride quality is fine as well, but the new Discover could use better tyres. The 100T uses a rather traditional ribbed tread pattern front tyre and similarly old fashioned rear tyre, which although not ill-suited to daily commuting, can improve. The 100T comes equipped with a 130mm drum brake in front and 110mm drum at the rear.
