Maruti considering raising car prices

KOLKATA: Maruti Suzuki, India's top carmaker, is considering to raise prices of its vehicles in about two weeks time, a senior official said on Wednesday.

"On the back of rising commodity prices such as steel and copper we are actively considering price increases across all our models in a couple of weeks," Commercial Business Head S N Burman told reporters.

He did not reveal the extent of the price rise.

Maruti had previously raised prices a year ago by about 2 per cent, he said.

Not a very substantial hike last year ... 2%, which means the current one should not be too painful either.

Word is that there would be 5% hike in Jan another 5% in April. That translates in a total 15% within three months. Though we are already in mid jan, there has been no hike in any car maker's stable except Fiat. So I really wouldn't buy these stories. Gimmicks to push sales in December. If any price increase has to happen, it would probably be done Feb onwards.

I think they are following the mantra of not doing too much with an established product, save the frequent tweaks ... but are concentrating on introduction of new models to offer more and more options to the customer.
The matter is, In India car models live their full-age which should be actually discontinued much before or rather keep them updating (Not like Zen to Zen Estilo case!). Slotting more models in-between creates the competition tougher and makes the confusion for New car buyers instead of providing them a wide range.

Maruti has increased the price of its vehicles - the average increase in prices would be around 0.6 per cent. But, the Ritz VDi and the Swift Dzire LXi models will witness a rise of 0.12 per cent and 1.9 per cent respectively.

Maruti and exclusivity?? That was a joke right[evil]. Exclusivity is far fetched for MSIL. Maybe Kizashi will change my opinion
Please read the full statement.

How long will it take for Maruti - Suzuki to understand that introducing only revised version or stripping down their costs won't work always. This trick may look mouth watering initially but there will come a period when people will need something New, different and prefer exclusivity. Hence, They will lay their hands on other car makers which are coping up with the levels of Maruti gradually.

Auto cos fear Budget may push up prices

Economictimes
The automobile industry fears that Budget 2010 may make cars, both big and small, more expensive by anything between Rs 2,000 and a lakh.
According to top auto CEOs, the government may roll back part of the stimulus package that helped boost car and SUV sales through 2009-10. Also expected is an upward revision in service tax as well as a 2% hike in Cenvat.

But the biggest price push could come if the Budget rolls back the 4% duty cut on big cars. That would mean cars longer than 4 metre in length and with engine sizes larger than 1.2 litre in petrol and 1.5 litre in diesel could get dearer by Rs 12,000 to Rs 1 lakh depending on the price tag.

Even i received one email from Concorde Motors -
Dear All,

The government is considering an across-the-board increase in excise duty in the Union budget 2010-11, as it faces pressure to withdraw fiscal stimulus measures in the wake of a 16-year high fiscal deficit of 6.8% in the current financial year. "One opinion being considered is the increase in the cenvat rate by 2% while leaving the service tax rate unchanged at 10%", a finance ministry official told ET. Cenvat refers to the median excise duty, tax on manufacture of goods, levied on nearly 90% of the goods made in the country.

More services could be brought under the tax net to allow the government to keep the service tax rates unchanged, the official said, requesting anonymity. A hike in service tax rate would be an immediate burden on consumers already battling high food prices. The proposal is at an early stage and may undergo significant changes by the time the budget is presented.

An alternate proposal is also under consideration, which moots an increase in excise rates in sectors that are doing well such as automobiles, instead of an across-the-board hike.

Tata Motors to hike prices of commercial vehicle by up to 2 pc

Economictimes
Tata Motors on Tuesday said it will increase prices of its commercial vehicles by up to two percent on account of the new emission norms that will be implemented from April.

"The prices can go up by 1-2 per cent of the total vehicle cost. New emissions norms require new technologies, therefore the prices will have to go up," Tata Motors President (Commercial Vehicles) Ravi Pisharody told.

Passenger cars and commercial vehicles will switch to Bharat Stage IV emission norms in 13 cities, while rest of the country will become Bharat Stage III compliant.

However, the company's Managing Director (India Operations) P M Telang declined to comment on the quantum of increase on passenger vehicles and said, "There will be an increase in prices of passenger vehicles but I cannot comment further right now."
