BYD Atto-3: Introduction

BYD-Atto-3-Front-Quarter.JPG

The Chinese products have gained a reputation for being “cheap” from a long time. Ignorantly, this perception is so engraved in the mindset of certain consumers that they think twice before investing a considerable amount in these products. However, be it cellphone or the automobile industry, a few new-age manufacturers are emerging to prove us that Chinese know a thing or two on how not only to develop some of the most innovative products from scratch but also the ones that are built to last. Build Your Dreams (BYD) is one such promising automaker. Founded in 1995, the company commenced its automotive operations in January 2003 following the acquisition of Qinchuan Automobile Company. BYD is currently present in the Automotive, Electronics, Renewable Energy and Rail Transit industries. The fact that BYD Auto overtook Tesla, in June 2022, as the world’s largest Electric Vehicle manufacturer is sufficient to show what this marque is upto. BYD entered India in 2007 but it’s only from last year that it commenced the sales to private buyers starting with the BYD e6 MPV.

BYD Atto-3: Looks & Design

The Atto-3 is the second passenger vehicle offering from BYD Auto India and also the most striking one. The name Atto-3 stands out of the crowd from existing trend of EV's two-three letter alphanumerical nomenclature. It is inspired by “attosecond”, which is the smallest time scale unit and, in this case, represents pursuit of speed and excelsior. BYD Atto-3 is unquestionably the most stylish and futuristic electric vehicle in India at present on this side of ₹40 Lakh. However, for the price-point, its size might appear a tad too compact especially when compared with internal combustion engine contemporaries available in the market such as Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Tiguan, Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster etc. The smaller dimensions are not a disadvantage per se as it makes BYD Atto-3 a practical urban commuter. To put the matter in right perspective, BYD Atto-3 is 4455 mm long, 1875 mm wide and 1615 mm tall. These figures are slightly more than Atto’s nearest (yet still distant) rival: MG ZS EV. BYD Atto-3 also boasts of an impressive 2720 mm wheelbase and 175 mm unladen ground clearance.

BYD-Atto-3-Rear-Quarter.JPG

You can be assured of a second glance by passersby whenever there’s a BYD Atto-3 around, something that I’ve witnessed myself. The SUV has a refreshing design and it looks much more European than Chinese. I also appreciate the fact that it has a conventional design from front with neatly integrated grille instead of a plasticky-appearing closed grille panel that has become a norm on electric cars. BYD has paid immense attention to detail throughout the vehicle inside out, helping improve overall premiumness, examples of which you’ll find further in this review. Sleek connected headlamps with twin-pod projectors look graceful. It’s a lesson for some automakers that one need not necessarily swap the placement of headlamps with LED DRLs when the headlamps themselves can be designed well. Overall, exterior build quality seems reassuring even though it may not be in the league of Germans. BYD Atto-3 has, in fact, earned an impressive five stars in the EuroNCAP crash test results in 2022.

The side profile has a slanting coupe-like roofline. Similar to the front and rear; side design is tastefully toned-down featuring limited but attractive elements. The color mix-matching isn’t overdone and well thought out. Take the chrome surround on windows for example or black cladding over the wheel arches that stylishly runs across the doors. Enhancing the appeal further are silver stripe on front fenders with “BYD Design” debossed as well as the ripple pattern silver-plated D-Pillars. Large alloy wheels (215/55 R18) unmistakably play a major role in contributing to the oomph factor. Turbine-style dual-tone alloys with brushed accents looked particularly scorching on our red colored test car. The rear design is subtle but not bland. The taillamps are connected with LEDs along with a chrome stripe and share a slight resemblance with the headlamps. While the front sports a new-age “BYD” logo, the tailgate has “Build Your Dreams” badging. Other than that, there’s “Atto 3” lettering in rather simple fonts and a small “EV” marking on left, which is the only EV symbol on the entire car.

BYD Atto-3: Interiors, Features & Comfort

BYD-Atto-3-Dashboard.jpg

You’re introduced to an entirely refreshing new environment on the inside of BYD Atto-3. Numerous curves, colors, textures and shapes may not be to everyone’s liking but I’d prefer to call it the most futuristic set of interiors on a production car this price-segment in India has seen until now. This interior design was once a fairytale limited to concept cars but transforming them into production models should be considered a positive omen of what the future has stored in for us. The multi-tone interiors utilize Blue, Beige and Black as their base colors with a tinge of red accents. There’s generous use of silver, chrome and brushed aluminum finish too. The material ranges from soft-touch leatherette to moderately soft-touch plastics and a few rough panels. The style saga doesn’t end here. BYD designers have gone a step ahead to experiment with shapes inspired from fitness and acoustic instruments. Dumbbell style air-conditioner vents, treadmill style center armrest or muscle streamline dashboard mid-section for example. Door unlock slider is unconventionally located on top of the protuberant door-mounted tweeters, which might leave the first-time occupants forever in the hunt of them. Functioning guitar strings are an interesting element on all four doors, which start from speakers and double up as sidewalls for door pockets.

There are only selected buttons to fiddle around since most of the features are controlled through a center-mounted 12.8” adaptive infotainment touchscreen unit which can rotate horizontally and vertically. It’s intuitive to use for the first-timers, thanks to a smartphone like user interface. The air-conditioner controls are present on home screen at all times. You can use infotainment to access various other features such as audio system, phone, 360° camera, driving recorder, reverse park assist, ADAS and vehicle related settings like electricity consumption, ambient lights etc. The instrument cluster, on the other hand, is relatively small at 5” and provides quick access to information related to driver’s use including speed, mileage, range, gear mode, driving mode, power meter, odometer, tripmeter, etc. Front bucket seats with built-in headrests are similar to what one would normally see in a sports car. They’ve 6-way power adjustment for driver’s side and 4-way power adjustment for co-driver side, which functions even after the car is turned off. There’s a long enough height increase and decrease range for short and tall drivers alike. Front seats are supportive but miss lumbar support adjustment. I also find them lacking sufficient under thigh support. Headroom could be a concern too at times when the seat is pushed forward.

BYD-Atto-3-Rear-Seat-View.JPG

Ingress and egress from front as well as rear is convenient and shouldn’t be too bothersome for the elderly. Open the panoramic sunroof shade and hop on to the rear seats. You’ll find it one spacious and breezy experience. BYD Atto-3 has substantial wheelbase and it clearly shows on the inside. Flat floor (without transmission tunnel hump) is an icing on the cake. The rear seats are large, comfortable and offer dedicated headrests for all three occupants. They provide slightly better under thigh support as well. The rear center armrest with twin cupholders is supremely cushy, compared to the front center armrest which is stiff and requires adequate cushioning. The backrest for two occupants is recessed but same is not the case for middle passenger because of the center armrest. Moreover, the center seat material isn’t as soft as for the other two. This is likely to make middle passenger experience uncomfortable for long drives. Thanks to the sunroof recess, the rear headroom is tolerable despite a sloping roofline. Legroom, on the flip side, will never be a matter of compromise even when the front seats are fully pushed back. The legroom becomes even greater, comparable to a limousine, to comfortably stretch your legs when the front seat is totally pushed forward.

BYD Atto-3: Performance, Braking, Ride & Handling

BYD-Atto-3-Engine-Bay.JPG

BYD Auto has two plants in India spanning across 1,40,000 sq.m with 3,000 employees and cumulative investment of $200 million. BYD Atto-3 is at present locally assembled in facility at Sriperumbudur near Chennai. The company is targeting to retail 15,000 units by end-2023 and setup a local manufacturing plant in near future. That’s when we can expect this SUV to become an even more value proposition. For now, the Atto-3 has virtually no direct competition, due to which the automaker confidently demands a premium for the technology it has loaded under the hood and chassis. BYD Atto-3 is the first model in India built on the e-Platform 3.0, which is designed exclusively for pure electric vehicles with Blade Battery, an 8-in-1 electric powertrain and highly integrated domain controllers. This platform features the world’s first 8-in-1 electric powertrain with integrated drive motor, motor controller, reducer, onboard charger, DC converter, high-voltage distribution box, vehicle controller and battery management system, resulting in 20% size reduction, 15% weight reduction and allowing over 89% efficiency.

Blade Battery:

The Lithium Iron Phosphate type Blade Battery is designed and manufactured by FinDreams Battery, a subsidiary of BYD. Blade Battery can be made in different lengths and thicknesses (most commonly 37.8” long and 3.5” wide) single-cell battery with a special design which can be placed in an array and inserted into battery pack like a blade. Space utilization of the battery pack is also increased by over 50% compared to conventional lithium iron phosphate block batteries. The Blade Battery is touted to be the only power battery in the world that has passed the most rigorous nail penetration test. In this test, battery emitted no smoke or fire after being penetrated, and its surface temperature reached only 30° to 60° Celsius. The battery also emerged unscathed and fully operational after a 46-tonne truck drove over it without exhibiting leakage, deformation, or smoke. BYD further claims to have heated it in a furnace to 300° C, and overcharged by 260% and no fires or explosions resulted. These outcomes definitely add confidence and address the common concerns of the first-time EV buyers. However, I believe that electric cars still have practically more to prove in the Indian conditions, such as extreme climates, accident situations, charging infrastructure, queues in charging stations once the EVs become mainstream etc.

BYD-Atto-3-BYD-Design-Badge.JPG

The 7-kW AC home charger with installation comes exclusive to the ex.showroom price. It can charge the vehicle in upto 9.5-10 hours. Fast charging requirements, on the other hand, are fulfilled with an 80-kW DC fast charger that tops-up the battery level from 0% to 80% in approx. 50 minutes. These figures can vary by many factors such as the load of electricity, charger specifications, outdoor temperatures etc. BYD Atto 3 has a decent ARAI-certified range of 521 kilometers on a single charge. Under the hood, you’ll find an uncluttered and roomy area compared to internal combustion cars. Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor on the front axle draws the energy via motor controller from the 60.48 kWh Blade Battery pack, which is situated under the cabin floor. BYD Atto delivers a healthy 201 BHP and 310 Nm torque. Furthermore, it has an impressive 0-100 Kmph acceleration of 7.3 seconds and a drag coefficient of 0.29Cd. The automatic transmission has a fuss-free operation and an awesome aircraft throttle-like gear lever with a separate button for “P” mode.

Performance & Handling:

To be honest, the first time I drove this car, it turned out to be a quite different impression than what I had perceived from an electric vehicle, i.e., feather-light accelerator combined with a prompt pickup. No, there’s not anything wrong with the car. It’s, in fact, smooth and fast and this situation improves as one approaches straight roads. Just that I had imagined extra-sensitive controls compared to internal combustion engine cars. Push the engine start-stop button on center console and you’ll hardly notice noise, vibration or harshness. There’s only a slight humming sound from the motor in background as one engages to “D” mode. It increases at higher speeds but is never intrusive. You’ll also listen a soothing music playing on the outside whenever the car is driven at speeds upto 20 Kmph to warn the pedestrians, beyond which natural wind and tyre noise are considered sufficient. This intentional noise is by law mandatory in several countries since electric vehicles produce much lesser noise on the exterior. Don’t worry though, the music doesn’t sound awkward and is audible only when one’s nearby.

BYD-Atto-3-Gear-Lever.jpg

The BYD Atto-3 has three drive modes that bring along significant change in the vehicle’s driving characteristics: Normal, Eco and Sport. Normal Mode, as the name indicates, is an ideal balance between fuel consumption and performance. Push the accelerator and the car pickups fast with adequate power delivery. However, in Eco Mode, one can feel the noticeably restrained response to accelerator. It continues to have grunt to keep the drive not-so-boring but still, this mode is most suitable for use in traffic conditions. Steering in both the aforementioned modes is light and convenient for urban usage. Sport Mode is where the BYD Atto-3 unveils its true prowess. It becomes much more involving to drive from an enthusiast’s perspective. Gentle tap on the accelerator brings those horses alive and provides a slight pushback experience on the seats upon quick acceleration. This performance remains lively at speeds above 80 Kmph with ample power available on tap of a pedal. Unfortunately, enjoyment in Sport comes at the cost of rapidly draining battery charge. Therefore, it’s best utilized on open highways when there’s a charging facility available around. Overall steering response is satisfactory. It weighs up with speed but I’d have preferred a more precise unit which would help during sharp maneuvering.

Suspension & Safety Features:

The suspension setup is well-tuned and flawlessly swallows minor humps and potholes at low-speed driving. It’s at higher speeds when the stiffness becomes obvious. The body-roll is noticeable too while tackling fast corners. Thankfully, the braking is extremely responsive and confidence inspiring. BYD Atto-3 is equipped with intelligent driving systems and multi-sensor layouts (two radars in front and four radars in rear), popularly known as ADAS which the Chinese auto manufacturer markets as BYD DiPilot L2 Driving Assist System. It incorporates Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB), Door Open Warning (DOW), and Adaptive Front Lights (AFL). Their settings can be configured through infotainment system. Apart from that, Atto hosts a lot more safety features like 7-airbags, Antilock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Traction Control System (TCS), Hill Descent Control (HDC) etc. There’s another interesting feature called Vehicle To Load (VTOL). It transforms the EV into a mobile power station and supports power up to 3.3 kW. You can simply plug and play high-power electrical appliances on occasions such as camping or use it to charge another light EV. Note that the VTOL mobile power supply unit is not a part of the standard feature, it needs to be purchased separately.

BYD-Atto-3-Alloy-Wheels.JPG

The Verdict:

BYD Atto-3 is a futuristic EV that meets international standards and is loaded to brim with gizmos. It’s neither cheap nor too expensive but marks an optimistic entry point for BYD India. Its pros far outweigh the cons which are primarily the price tag and limited dealership network. For those EV lovers, who’re willing to shell out a premium over the current lot of electric cars for exclusivity and style, the BYD Atto-3 makes for a sound bet.

BYD-Atto-3-Front-View-Doors-Open.JPG

You'll Love: [thumbsup]
  • Gorgeous exterior design that’s subtle and looks more like European than Chinese.
  • Flamboyant interiors remind of a concept car; they are also functional at the same time.
  • Good driving range on a single-charge. BYD Blade Battery is one of the most trusted around.
  • Neat balance between economical (being an EV) and fun (exuberant performance in Sport mode).
  • Large cabin, light colors, panoramic sunroof and a long wheelbase are a recipe to Atto's abundant interior space.
  • Plenty of safety features and gizmos: ADAS, DVR, NFC Card Key, 360° Camera, Wireless Charger, VTOL Station, Panoramic Sunroof etc.

You'll Loathe: [thumbsdown]
  • Pretty expensive pricing especially if compared to Atto's internal combustion engine contemporaries.
  • Exclusion of facilities like Battery Charger and Vehicle To Load Power Station from the Ex.showroom price.
  • Extremely weak dealership network that’s currently no match to EVs in immediate segment below and above.
  • Long-term reliability of electric cars is still a major question in India in addition to limited charging infrastructure.
  • Front under-thigh support is poor for tall occupants. Basics like lumbar support adjust and front seat ventilation are missing.
  • BYD brand lacks the snob value essential for this price point. Plus, Chinese products have negative sentiments post COVID-19.

Go-kart like steering wheel design. It feels nice to hold but wish this unit had more precision.

BYD-Atto-3-Steering.JPG

Steering is equipped with infotainment and drive-related settings buttons.

BYD-Atto-3-Steering-Controls.jpg

The indicator and wiper stalks are on right and left respectively. That’s the trip meter button at the tip.

BYD-Atto-3-Stalks.jpg

The most attractive engine Start-Stop button I’ve seen lately. Love those lettering reflections around.

BYD-Atto-3-Start-Stop-Button.jpg

Pedals are well-spaced and the dead pedal is comfortably wide.

BYD-Atto-3-Pedals.JPG

These are the only buttons you’ll find on center console since most settings are operated through infotainment.

BYD-Atto-3-Center-Console.JPG

Dashboard is an art combination of shapes, styles and colors. The Blue art-leather is soft-touch while the beige part is relatively firmer.

BYD-Atto-3-Passenger-Dashboard.jpg

5” instrument cluster is small but does the job.

BYD-Atto-3-Instrument-Cluster.jpg

The center infotainment screen can rotate to horizontal and portrait modes at the touch of a button.

BYD-Atto-3-Infotainment-Screen.jpg

There’s detailed electricity consumption information available on infotainment screen including graphs and related settings.

BYD-Atto-3-Battery-Info.jpg

The drive recorder (dashcam) is in-built and a standard feature on BYD Atto-3.

BYD-Atto-3-Drive-Recorder.jpg

The camera quality is vivid. Reverse camera features dynamic guidelines.

BYD-Atto-3-Rear-Parking-Camera.jpg

BYD Atto-3 has total 7 airbags including a far-side airbag on driver side. Front passenger airbag can be turned off when using a child-seat.

BYD-Atto-3-Airbags.jpg

That’s the dumbbell style side air-conditioner vent from side-view. Blower noise sounds like a wind from 4th level onward. AC is equipped with CM 95 and PM 2.5 air filters.

BYD-Atto-3-Front-AC-Vent.jpg

All four power windows are auto up and down. Boot opening button is placed on the driver’s door as well.

BYD-Atto-3-Door-Buttons.jpg

Power-operated front seats are six-way adjustable for driver side and four-way for co-driver side.

BYD-Atto-3-Electric-Seat-Adjust.jpg

Blue leather upholstery with red stitching looks extremely classy.

Front head room could sometimes be an issue for the tall front occupants. More so if the seat height is raised.

BYD-Atto-3-Front-Headroom.jpg

Inside rear view mirror covers the area well.

BYD-Atto-3-IRVM-View.JPG

Vanity mirror lamp turns on only when the sunroof visor mirror shutter is opened.

BYD-Atto-3-Sunvisor.JPG

Front seats recline fully back to form a bed. Sadly, they are perforated but not ventilated.

BYD-Atto-3-Front-Seat.jpg

Treadmill inspired front armrest is wide but requires better cushioning.

BYD-Atto-3-Front-Armrest.JPG

It also rubs with the driver seat when opened.

BYD-Atto-3-Front-Armrest-Latch.jpg

Storage space under the front armrest is enormous and extends beneath the cupholders ahead.

BYD-Atto-3-Front-Armrest-Storage.JPG

Glovebox has mediocre stowage with a rather dim lighting.

BYD-Atto-3-Glovebox.jpg

This clever storage space between the center console is accessible from both the sides. It has a C-Type, USB charging ports,12V socket and SD card slot for the dashcam.

BYD-Atto-3-Center-Storage.jpg

Door unlock lever is unique. Guitar strings on door pockets work for real (watch the video in Post #7).

Door pockets are small to properly accommodate a 700ml bottle. One liter bottle will be an even more tight fit.

The rear seats are comfortable and spacious. Play the right music, open sunroof shade and go on a long drive. It’ll be one enjoyable experience in the Atto-3.

Black sunroof shade quite effectively blocks the direct sunlight from reaching inside the cabin.

The rear seats get independent roof lamps.

Flat rear floor plays an important role in adding to spacious legroom.

The rear legroom is decent even if the front seat is fully pushed back and it becomes limousine-like when the front seats are fully forward.
