Well, Swift is the diesel king, followed by Figo. You can choose between Figo and Punto. Both of them have lots of features and good ride and handling . D punto 90HP is really a great car, which is simply let down by bad A.S.S. .. But since Fiat would start their own independent showrooms and service stations by next year, you don't have to worry about that.
yes swift is the king of diesel but if and only if its deliver iam waiting for more then 3 month for mine to be delivered but when ever i inquire dealer about the delivery of car he made an excuse that currently no swift zdi model are in production only vdi ldi are in production , and when i want a tentative date of delivery he don't give any appropriate ans . now thinking about alternative of swift with frequent petrol price hike is main concern .[frustration]

Since you are looking at Diesel hatches, so my order of preference would be :

1. Ford Figo : Awesome handling, VFM.
2. Punto MJD : Superb car in this segment. Only issue is FIAT India image.
3. Polo TDI : I guess a lower version might fit in the bill.
4. I20 CRDi : Better on highways than in city due to turbolag.

Not suggesting Fabia TDi due to Skoda image and horror stories.

Tricky question with no straight answer. You love it or hate it, Maruti Suzuki Swift Diesel is the car to vie for in the market. I have been trying to find a used diesel, but goddamn none is available. Anyway, all other diesel options are not all round packages, every one has some positives and some negatives pulling them down.

Closest rival would be Ford Figo Titanium - if the usage is more in city. Lower end torque is great and you can drive it whole day in the city without getting tired. But take it on a highway and you will understand it skips a beat or two.
Skoda Fabia is also a great option - it has great space inside, good package, but again lacks in after sales and carrying an image of high maintenance car.
Fiat Punto 90HP - nothing wrong with car, absolutely nothing, just marred by pathetic Fiat After sales, and Tata's step brotherly treatment.
Micra Diesel - is again a good option, but has subjective looks and interiors
Etios D - not a bad option again with Toyota badge, barring few niggles like apparent cost cuttings all around the car.
Tata Vista Quadrajet - If you can live with the image of Tata, best car for best money!!

In my opinion this thread should have been a poll, and on second thoughts that poll already has been taken [:)]

Hi if you can wait the swift is still worth the wait.. Coz I am waiting for my zdi since July and guess I'll have to wait for another 3 months.. So I bought a k10 vxi as a consolation prize and loving it.
To answer the question,
1.Ford Figo it is. I almost bought one till I drove the swift zdi. The Figo feels very solid and has very mature ride and handling and has good space inside but the downside is lack of some features and ford does get heavy on the pocket in the long term in terms of maintenance.
2. Fiat punto. Looks great, rides very well, feels like it will last long, emotion pack is fully loaded. Downside is the irritatingly large turning radius, fiat service
4.i20. Peppy engine. Spacious, well built, Hyundai service network. But doesn't handle well, some issues the current owners are facing.
3.indica vista. New one looks pretty good, good value for money, lots of features. But handling isn't that great, tata brand doesn't feel premium, my friend has a 5 yr old indica every time I travel in it it feels like it will fall apart[lol]
4. Polo: looks great will age well. Will last you a long time. But expensive and not loaded enough.
5. I don't like micra, ritz, beat diesel, so dont recommend them to you too either.

But ask a few questions to yourself and you will know what you want To buy.
What are your Priorities.?
Milage?
Cost of purchase?
How long do you want to keep it?
How accessible are the service centres to where you live?
Are you a performance handling junkie or are you a space economy type ?
Good luck and let us what you decided [:)]

Maruti Swift is a premium diesel hatch thats good in all aspects. According to me there is no substitutes for the Swift as such in the market. The wait for the all new swift is "worth the wait"..The excellent value for money the swift offers and the after sales service are always the best !

hey as u said that u also own fiat punto so i like to ask few things from you
1. fuel efficiency
2. offer u avail from dealer ?
3. low turning radius is it so ?
4. build quality ?
5. handling and suspension .
and buddy please i want a honest and impartial wording from u
thanks in advance.[cheers]
It is just been around 2 weeks i bought the car. And done around 900kms with her.

Fuel efficiency just did one tankful to tankfull. I get around 15.83kms/liter with 100% A/C on in city driving

I got lot of offers from dealer. Got flat 50k discount on the on road price plus 10k worth accessories.

All car have some turning radius issues. Punto being the largest hatch in its segment too have some turning radius issue.

Build quality is rock solid. The only reason why opted for Punto instead of Figo. Punto's produced after June 2011 have improved build quality and good plastics. And zero turbo lag.

Suspension is another reason why i went for Punto. Suspension is stiff and soft. Now it is raining heavily in Chennai from the day i took delivery of the car. There are hardly visible roads in my area. Roads are in very bad condition. Punto deals with them properly.

So far the only complaint i have is that front left door is not locking properly and low ground clearance.

Any day Indica vista is better option than swift, good space ,nice ride quality, better boot, less turbolag, good brakes ,more feature.

But my ranting doesn't helps unless people can come out of some hard and wierd beliefs .until then for everybody swift is the best from my end too.

BTW I went to buy swift and came home with Indica vista ,never ever i regretted for my purchase.I still love it as a great car and gave me lot of happy moments.
I used it for one full year and sold only to upgrade it for even better one.

Just sharing one of the moments i captured while being with her on endless awesome journeys.
