Guys, this is my current setup:

Pioneer FH P6050UB HU
Pioneer TS S201 50W Tweeters (X2)
400W JBL oval (X2)
Blaupunkt 750W mono block amp (X1)
1000W Hertz Sub (X1)
150W Panasonics door speakers (X4) (they came with the car but they sound pretty decent actually - want to upgrade to kenwood when i have the money)

I have a doubt though: only 2 of the 4 door speakers are connected. People are telling me not to connect the other two because it will reduce sound quality. is this true? and why? should i go for a 4 channel amp to connect the speakers?
answered here buddy-
http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/forums/car-entertainment/1961-questions-regarding-ice.html

Also, can somone differenciate the sound quality of the rear oval speakers
when they are:
a) setup in speaker boxes
b) setup on a slab?

i hope i'm being clear on what i'm asking!!
you mean setup on the rear parcel tray. in a sedan, the only option to mount rear speakers is on the rear door or parcel tray. so, speaker boxes are out of question.

No Raj i have still not added amp to my front speakers! [frustration] Planning to change them to comps soon!

But do i really need to add amp to the front speakers? Unlike before after changing the HU the bass thump effect is not overshadowing the vocals anymore and i can hear the voice clearly even in volume level 3.
Since you are satisfied with the vocals now, no need.

BUT BUT BUT, if you are planning to install comps in front, you will need atleast need a 2 ch amp for it. comps are of no use without an amp buddy. it needs the power.

if i am right, your car already has two 2ch amps for the 2 subs. trade in one 2 ch amp for a 4 ch one if you plan to install comps.

my .2$

do not forget to read and understand all those parameter written somewhere on the cover or manuals before you spend your hard earned bucks.

you might have wondered the ice in next car have smaller woofers and cheaper setups yet giving more thumps than your own!!!

a 10 inch 98dbspl subwoofer can give out as much bass as two 12inch 90dbspl sub woofer, given same amount of power-thats how mathematics works.!!!!!.

if a woofer with closed box can produce bass level of 300 watts , the same woofer in a properly designed vented box can produce bass level of 600watts system. yes vented box doubles the bass levels.
that is the magic of +3db gain.
again mathematics .
but they work in real too !!!!!
-----------Next Post-----------
beware ,

there are counterfeit product for every common and in demand car accessories.
which is not even one tenth the quality of original ones, but with almost identical price.

PUCCA POINTS

Amplifier for sub must have good amount of power , unlike some normal installation like a 2 channel to a sub - will just play the subwoofer but not the required . Hell lot of people are happy with this itself[frustration][frustration]

Good points there Jayadev!

Ilango you have mentioned my previous setup which have done to me. Average listeners are satisfied with that because that it itself will be too much for them. Audiophiles will definitely need more out of their subwoofers!

BTW i cant wait to hear suggestions from you for my setup now!

+1

right one means the one which can go flat straight down below 20hz with 110+db spl ....
guess what , it can pull off the pants of a guy standing 10 meters away!!!! yet without any listening fatigue or boominess to the passengers....
which can be achieved with just two 12 inchers .

lets have some fun

dB = 10 * Log(Power1 / Power2)

lets take two of the subwoofers from hertz website, one is 12 incher and other one is 15 incher. let us see who wins.

hertz mille ml 3000

  • Size: 300mm/12"
  • » Impedance: 4 Ohm
  • » Sensitivity: 98dB/SPL
  • »Power Handling: 1200 Watts Max, 600Watts Continuous
here i get 98db of sound pressure level from 1 watt amplifier.
if i increase my power to 100watts i get 20db boost ie 98+20=118db
if i increase my power to 1000watts i get 30db boost ie 98+30=128db

hertz mille ml 3800

  • Size: 380mm (15")
  • Power Handling: 1800w Peak / 900w Continuous program
  • Impedance: 4 Ohm
  • Sensitivity: 91dB/SPL

here i get 91db of sound pressure level from 1 watt amplifier.
if i increase my power to 100watts i get 20db boost ie 91+20=111db
if i increase my power to 1000watts i get 30db boost ie 91+30=121db
if i increase my power to 2000watts i get 33db boost ie 91+33=124db

the specs are from manufacturer data and not measured in field by me

hope it is not too much of rocket science with dB = 10 * Log(Power1 / Power2) using a calculator...

=10 * Log(200watts /100watts) = +3 db !! for increase
=10 * Log(100watts /200watts) = -3 db !! for decrease

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

from the previous post contd

if i add a a closed enclosure to woofers i get additional boost of +12db.

so at maximum power see how both performs

12" if i increase my power to 1000watts i get 30db boost ie 98+30=128+12=140db

if i add one more woofer i get double power ie +3db= 143db
to double it if i add 2 more ie total 4 woofer +3db=146db (more than loudness of missile/rocket launch )

(15")if i increase my power to 2000watts i get 33db boost ie 91+33=124+12=136db
if i add one more woofer i get double power ie +3db= 139db
to double it if i add 2 more ie total 4 woofer ie +3db= 142db(almost as loud as of missile/rocket launch )
