Not surprising considering the spot on marketing strategies as well as an impressive product line up of Audi in India. Here is the complete article from Economic Times.

The race for the top slot in the Indian luxury car market is hotting up with German maker Audi fast catching up with leader BMW after surpassing compatriot Mercedes Benz in April-June period this year. According to figures released by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Audi's sales in the first three months of the fiscal have jumped by 52.15 per cent to 1,908 units from 1,254 units in the year-ago period. On the other hand, sales of market leader BMW declined by 12.16 per cent to 2,088 units as against 2,377 units in the same period last year, it added.

The second largest luxury car maker Mercedes Benz too witnessed 24.41 per cent fall in its sales at 1,257 units compared to 1,663 units in April-June in 2011. In June, however, Audi's sales surpassed that of BMW by selling 759 vehicles compared to 750 units of the rival. In the same month last year Audi's sales were at 354 units, while that of BMW were 890 units.

On the other hand, sales of Mercedes Benz stood at 622 units in June this year compared to 566 units in the year-ago month, it added. Since the second half of last year, the German luxury car makers had not made public their sales in India due to anti-trust issues in Europe. They have resumed submitting their sales data to SIAM from June this year. Last month, Audi India head Michael Perschke had stated that the company was confident of overtaking BMW as the market leader in India by 2014, a year ahead of the company's original plans.

No doubt Audi is good, but this brand catches only Indian people, elsewhere, Audi is just like any other car. Brands like BMW sit above it & Merc even higher.
This can be seen from the nos of S Class, 7 series & A8.

It is funny to see when Indians consider Skoda as premium car maker....it is actually a cheaper car maker of VW group, just like Daihatsu or Dacia.

And now there are reports of starting bookings for another 500 units.
But heck, why are people buying Q3 when the price difference on road between Q3 & Q5 is tad over 4L ? [confused]

German car major Audi, which claims to have overtaken BMW India as the largest premium and luxury car maker in June, may end 2012 in the second spot due to supply constraints surrounding its compact sports utility vehicle Q3. If not for the shortfall, the Ingolstadt-based company may achieve the number one position in India in 2012 itself against the earlier target of 2014-15.

The Q3 managed to get 500 bookings within a span of just 5 days and the company has already delivered 300 units in the last couple of months. It is hoping to sell another 200 in the next two months.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of new variant of A8, Audi India head Micheal Perschke told ET that the numbers game do matter to his company and he has set sight on a strong number two position for 2012.

"We are bumper to bumper, we are looking at opportunity to overtake, but once we overtake we want to consistently stay there. We had planned to be No. 2 by the end of this year; we made it in March, which was a surprise. We did not even think at all that we will be No. 1 this year, we achieved that in June. It was more of a lucky coincidence, but the focus this year is to be very solidly seeing the number two position and if we see window of opportunity, we might put some pressure on our opponents," said Perschke.

Audi says it is confident of exceeding its target of 8,000 units in 2012. Perschke says the company has been nimble-footed and has backup plans to become the No. 1 player in 2014 if not in 2013. Audi, which advanced the launches of A4 and Q3, has grown by over 40 per cent in a market which grew just 9 per cent in the first six months of 2012 due to overall economic slowdown. In the first half of 2012, Audi sold 4,000 units, clocking an impressive 43 per cent growth. Sales figures for its main competitors in India, BMW and Mercedes Benz, were almost flat.

Audi plans to set-up dedicated unit at Aurangabad

Audi India plans to set-up dedicated unit at Aurangabad
New unit to have installed capacity of 3000 units
Total production to hit 9500 units
Audi Q3 & Q7 local production

Audi India seems to be on a fastrack mode in India. With sales crossing expectations and growing at double digits the company may soon snatch the number one position from BMW in the Indian market. To meet increasing demand, Audi is setting up a dedicated production unit at the Aurangabad plant.

The company currently assembles A4 and A6 sedans along with Q5 SUV at the plant which currently has a capacity to assemble 6,500 units in India annually. The German luxury car maker is looking to add a capacity of 3,000 cars a year at the new unit which will take the total production to 9500 units per year.

Audi is targeting to sell 8,000 units this year and is expecting 20 per cent jump in 2013. The new unit will mainly cater to the assembly of SUV Q7 by the end of this year and will probably start the assembly of Q3 from next year. The construction of the plant will be completed by end of this year.

Audi also plans to add more models to the Indian market which includes the A3 sedan, the new range Q models and the A1 hatchback.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz have also increased their investments in India. The luxury car market growth has been slightly affected by the slowdown in economy and high interest rates.

^^ This will lead to drastic price cuts in Q3 & Q7 as not only taxes will be less, but even registration charges will be far less being locally assembled, not to forget the insurance.

I would rather like to see VW slashing its prices of Tuareg & Passat. Both are not selling just because of high price.

Audi, the German luxury car manufacturer, organized Women’s Power Drive, an exclusive program to give women a chance to experience the driving pleasure of the Audi Q range, in New Delhi as part of their rollout of ‘Audi Q-Drive’.

The ‘Audi Q-Drive’, is a one of its kind program which will give participants a chance to experience and test drive the sporty and sophisticated Audi SUV range – Audi Q7, Audi Q5 and the Audi Q3.

A good number of our luxury SUVs are being driven by women in India. Audi enthusiast film actor Gul Panag co-hosted the Women’s Power-Drive and took women through the finer aspects of ‘Audi Q Life’ while explaining the features of Audi Q3, Audi Q5 and Audi Q7. Incidentally, Gul also owns an Audi Q5 and recently took a roadtrip to the Sach Pass in the Audi Q5 and Audi Q3.

To make the experience even more exhilarating, Audi has put together a team of India’s most prominent motorsport experts at the helm of the event. The second leg of the Women’s Power Drive is in Mumbai on October 26.

Audi is focused to strengthen its national footprint across India. The company recently opened new showrooms in Goa, Navi Mumbai, Coimbatore, Delhi West, Nagpur and Bhopal.
