Apple rolling out iOS 12.4.4 update for older iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch

Many times the smartphone manufacturers are accused of leaving their phones obsolete prematurely to force users on buying new models. Although, Apple is not one of them. The company has now released a major security iOS 12.4.4 update for its older iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices which are not compatible with iOS 13.

The list of compatible iPhone models for the new iOS 12.4.4 update includes iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 5s. The update is also available for the first-generation iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3 and sixth-generation iPod touch. The update doesn’t bring in any new features to the device. Although, it includes a major security bug fix for Face Time and other system-level security patches.

Apple iOS 13.3 released with fix for multitasking issue: Check out the changelog and how to update

Apple has released iOS 13.3, the next version of its mobile operating system. Since the release of iOS 13, Apple users have been complaining about various bugs affecting the system. While incremental updates have been released by the company, the new update fixes some of the known issues with the system. With the new version, Apple is trying to make iOS smoother and fix issues like switching between applications. Alongside the fixes, the update also brings some new features to the device.

The biggest change, according to the changelog, is the fix to multitasking issue. There were several complaints by iOS users who noted that they were unable to switch between apps. With iOS 13.3, Apple is addressing that issue and also takes care of the memory management to avoid reload of apps. In the Screen Time app, you can now set limits for phone calls, messages and FaceTime calls for children. This can be further customized based on who the kids are talking to. The Safari browser on iPhone and iPad also brings support for FIDO-2 compliant security keys that use USB, lightning or NFC for authentication.

Apple has launched a service programme for the iPad Air (2019) models that are affected by a “Blank Screen” issue. The Cupertino giant has announced that the issue has impacted a “limited number” of third-generation iPad Air models that were launched last year. Affected consumers can visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider with their iPad Air to get it serviced. Alternatively, the company has provided mail-in service via its Apple Repair Centres in select markets. The service programme for the iPad Air (2019) is notably live across the globe and covers faulty devices for two years after first retail purchase.

Apple iPhone SE 2020 launched in India

apple-iphone-se-2020-launch-price-sale-specs.jpg

The iPhone SE flaunts the same 4.7-inch Retina HD display and design as the iPhone 8. However, the body is now metal as opposed to a glass back. The display supports Dolby Vision and HDR10 playback. It uses Haptic Touch for Quick Actions — such as animating Live Photos, previewing messages, rearranging apps and more.

Internally, the phone packs Apple’s A13 Bionic chip just like iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. Following the tradition, Apple hasn’t revealed the RAM size, but confirmed that the phone will be made available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB storage models.

Cost of iPhone SE 2020 in India for 64Gb variant is ₹ 42500/-.
$399 in US is good pricing but in India its too much for old body style iPhone. I don’t see any future for this model in India unless Apple start assembling this one in India which will bring down cost by ₹ 10K at least. Lets see what Apple will do as they cannot produce any iPhone in India till Lockdown ends.

Major security vulnerability discovered in iOS, Apple says will fix it soon

pic-zero-day_425_735.jpg

Apple iPhone and iPad users, a new zero-day vulnerability has been discovered this week by researchers, who claim the issue could have allowed hackers to access the data on your device by sending you a blank mail through Apple's mailing client.

The report from ZecOps, explains the issue might have existed for over 8 years on iOS, which leaves most of the iPhone and iPad users in danger. The issue was discovered by the research firm on iPhone and iPad Mail app, while they were doing routine security checks of consumer devices.

ZecOps says the vulnerability would allow the hacker to run remote code using the Mail app, and if they succeed, the user of the device wouldn't even come to know their device has been breached. Since it's a zero-day vulnerability, which means nobody knew about this issue, not even Apple, it's now necessary the Cupertino-based giant looks to fix the issue via a software patch at the earliest.

New character bug causes iPhone, iPad and other iOS devices to crash: Report

A new character-linked bug has cropped up, and it is freezing iPhone, iPad devices, Apple Watch, and other iOS devices. When a string of text is sent to iOS units, the devices crash or completely stops responding to touch input upon receiving the message. The message includes the Italian flag emoji along with characters in the Sindhi language.

Apple is yet to release a fix publicly. Currently, the information on the origin of the text is scarce, but it is being reported that it all started from a Telegram group. Now, the test message is going viral on Twitter and other social media platforms. Apple is expected to fix these character bugs within a few days as there is no way to stop these characters from causing crashes. MacRumors reported that the issue is fixed in the second 13.4.5 iOS beta update.

Apple Maps brings Nearby feature to India

maps_425_735.jpg

Apple is finally adding new set of features to its Maps ecosystem in India. The company has rolled out Nearby service for iPhone users in the country, which allows them to search for restaurants, gas stations or bank ATMs in an area. To make this work, open Apple Maps on your iPhone and tap on the search bar to look for particular item from the drop down list.

Apple Maps has been around for ages but in India it has been hard for the navigation platform to compete with Google Maps which has big first-mover advantage. Add to that, you have more than 98 percent users in the country with Android device, making Google Maps their default choice. With the introduction of iOS 13 and iPadOS in 2019, we have seen Apple making customisations to add features that are relevant for the Indian market. Offering Nearby for the country is next the move in making sure the navigation platform becomes relevant for its Indian users.

iOS 14 closer look: Home screen widgets, App Library, Clips and all the top features coming to iPhone

ios-14-660.png

If you have an iPhone 6S and above, you should definitely be excited. Apple has announced iOS 14 (at WWDC 2020) and with it we’re seeing definite signs of change in the way Cupertino likes to do things. Apple, a company known for its closely guarded ecosystem(s), seems ready to open up finally, giving iPhone users some much needed flexibility in software, like their Android counterparts. As such, iOS 14 may mark the biggest shift in strategy for Apple in a long, long time.

This starts with the home screen. Thanks to iOS 14, the iPhone can now support widgets. Apple is even going ahead and making it easier to pick and drop widgets to the home screen through features like widget gallery and smart stack, both of which are designed to curate relevant widgets for you. Like Android, widgets in iOS 14 will also come in different sizes. There’s also a new App Library view in iOS 14 that automatically organizes all your apps into categories and lists. This is also updated depending on app usage. Similar to Android’s app drawer approach, App Library will also (finally) allow iPhone users to hide apps from their home screen.

Apple iOS 13.5.1 update introduced an infuriating bug

Apple recently revealed it’s upcoming iOS 14 update and what it will bring. But it does not mean that the company is slacking off of releasing the updates for its present users on iOS 13. It recently released iOS 13.5.1 update, which brought a fix for vulnerability exploited by unc0ver jailbreak tool. But what the developers didn’t expect, is that this will introduce a bug.

According to reports, Apple users are increasingly reporting that Apple Music app would rapidly drain the battery. The bigger problem was that once Apple Music runs, the battery keeps on draining despite not running in the background. Some users also complained that their devices were getting heated up a lot. Users have taken to different online forums to complain about the issue. But Apple is yet to respond on this issue and release a fix.

Apple iOS 13.6 update lets your phone unlock and start your car using NFC

Apple recently released iOS 13.6 for the compatible iOS and iPadOS devices. The new update brings in some new features. This includes a new digital car keys feature and some improvements to the Health application. Talking about the car keys feature, with iOS 13.6, your phone can now act as keys for compatible cars.

Apple teased the feature during its recent WWDC 2020 keynote. Now it is live for a lot of iPhones. It works by allowing users to use NFC on their phones to unlock their cars by placing the device next to the car door. Further, the Apple iPhone can then be also used to start the car.

The digital key that is required to start your car is stored on the smartphone. However, it can be remotely deleted via iCloud in case you lose your iPhone. What’s interesting is that you can also send your secure digital key to another iOS user via iMessage. This allows you to let someone else unlock and start your car, eliminating the need for a shared physical key.

Apple iPhone 11 to be the first flagship iPhone manufactured in India

Apple has officially started producing its flagship Apple iPhone 11 at the Foxconn plant near Chennai in India. While iPhones have been made in India before, this is the first time when a flagship model has been locally assembled in the country. The move will help Apple by reducing the costs of import and hence the final cost of the phones. Further, with the government’s Make-in-India initiative, this also helps create more employment opportunities in India.

Production will be gradually stepped up at the plant in stages. Once enough units are being assembled at the Foxconn plant, Apple might even consider exporting units assembled here to other countries. As per a report by Economic Times, industry experts have suggested that US-based Apple may use this as a way to reduce dependency on China.
