Re: Mercedes Benz New S-Class Spied (2013)

Thanks a lot for pics Visran. [clap] Can't wait to see her in flesh. The interiors I must admit are now far superior than current S Class. With the new tech, safety features, luxury....the new S Class will surely continue to get its title of being the " Best Automobile in the World". [clap] Just waiting for her launch in India. [:)]

Mercedes Benz New S-Class

More updates on new S Class -

Part 1 -

Energizing Comfort

Mercedes has an entire team focused on ensuring that people are not only relaxed behind the wheel of its cars, but that they actually feel better after leaving than before they got in. The concept is called "energizing comfort." After spending just 30 minutes inside a stationary 2014 S-Class, experimenting its massaging seats, Burmester high-end audio system and scent dispenser, among other amenities, I'd say they're definitely onto something.

Handcrafted
Hand-stitching on the steering wheel is one example of the elevated craftsmanship that goes into the 2014 Mercedes S-Class.

Moving Up

Quilted stitching, as shown in the leather covering the dashboard in this photo, is normally the purview of Bentleys and other ultra-luxury cars at a higher price point than a Mercedes S-Class. But it is optional on the 2014 model.

Part 2 -

The Smell of Luxury

One of the most curious additions to the S-Class is a fragrance dispenser. It’s located in the glove box and sends a waft of perfume into the cabin through vents in the dashboard. It works for five minutes at a time, with a five-minute pause in between, because the nose gets accustomed to smells after a while.

Recling in Comfort

Optional seats in the rear of the S-Class recline more than 43 degrees and have thigh support. There's even a little foot rest that folds out of the front seat, once you move it forward. The pillow on the headrest is plush.

Mercedes-Benz is proud of the interior of its 2014 S-Class, with good reason. It approaches ultra-luxury levels of design and refinement. As such, it is a worthy successor to the discontinued Maybach.

Next Mercedes S-Class interior details revealed

Mercedes-Benz has revealed photographs of the interiors of the upcoming W222 S-class which has been designed with an emphasis on rear-seat passenger comfort and what Mercedes bosses call the “essence of luxury”.

Goetz Renner, Mercedes’ head of customer research, says the S-class has been conceived around the vision of “energising comfort”. Mercedes researchers say they are reacting to the global “mega-trend” for “health and fitness and the need for work/life balance” where people “need to relax to preserve their resources”. The upshot is innovations such as an on-board scent diffuser and ‘energising’ massage seats, as our detailed look explains.

DASHBOARD

The instrument binnacle is made up of two 12.3-inch TFT screens. The left display shows — in digital form — conventional speedo and rev counter dials, and on the right is the control screen/multimedia/sat-nav display. Ambient lighting makes the instruments appear free-standing.

STEERING WHEEL

The unusual two-spoke wheel design will be unique to the S-class, says Mercedes. As in most luxury cars, the wheel can be heated, but the S-class will also have the option of heated armrests.

CLIMATE CONTROL

A new individual climate control system called Thermotronic seems optimised for polluted Chinese cities. Two combined filters feature, one for fine dust and one made from activated charcoal filters. An ionising system can filter out various viruses and spores while freshening the air.

DASH DETAIL

This interior design theme was developed by Mercedes’ design studio in Como, northern Italy. It was based around the theory of an ‘appreciation model’ where, instead of upgrading a functional interior to become more luxurious, manufacturing restraints were removed and designers tried to make creative ideas into reality.

DOOR PANEL

The only plastic used in the interior is the lining of the aperture for the door release. All other materials are either wood, leather or aluminium. The shutlines between the components and trim are unusually tight, seemingly achieved by pushing the controls and trim parts through the leather facing.

SEAT SWITCHES

The close-up view of the seat controls shows how switchgear is tightly fitted to the leather trim. The laser-etched aluminium speaker trim is fitted with the range-topping Burmester hi-fi.

REAR INTERIOR

Long-wheelbase models come with the option of ‘Executive’ reclining individual seats. The backrest on the nearside rear seat can tilt to 43.5deg, the most in any car, and the Chauffeur package allows the front seat to be pushed forward. The Executive package includes a ‘Business’ centre console that can house two bottles in the central chiller and has cupholders that can both chill and heat.

FULL INTERIOR

Interior space is slightly improved over the current S-class’. Features include seatbelt holsters that rise electrically when passengers get in to aid seatbelt fastening. Rear seatbelts also have integrated airbags. Reclining seats get an airbag under the seat cushion, designed to stop a reclining passenger from sliding out under the seatbelt in an accident.

SEAT

The front seats are a claimed 20kg lighter, mainly thanks to a new steel and plastic construction method. They can be specified with a ‘Comfort’ package that mimics a hot-stone massage. Mercedes builds the E-class and S-class seats in-house. The current E-class has 300,000 possible seat specifications. The new S-class will have “considerably more”.

SOUND SYSTEM

The range-topping sound system has been designed with top-end hi-fi manufacturer Burmester. It has 24 speakers and 1540 watts of power and uses a new design of bass bin. The 3D setting is said to provide an extraordinary sound stage that makes passengers think they’re surrounded by instruments playing the music.

STRUCTURE

Mercedes engineers have gone to extreme lengths to reduce the amount of interior noise that is transmitted into the S-class cabin. To that end, torsional stiffness has been increased by 14 percent, lateral bending by 11 percent and vertical bending by 17 percent.

To help damp out noise, vibration and harshness from the drivetrain, the car’s front chassis legs are made of extruded aluminium and cast aluminium is used as mounting points for the front structure on to the bulkhead and for the strut mounts.

A mix of sound-deadening materials, insulation and damping materials have been attached to the car’s body structure. Damping foil is used on the floorpan and liners made of absorbing materials are used in the rear wheel arches to reduce noise. The sealing systems around the windows and door handles have been upgraded and the A-pillars and door mirrors redesigned to cut wind noise.

SCENT

The S-class includes a built-in atomiser, which diffuses scents into the cabin. Mercedes has worked with perfume specialist Marc vom Ende, who has developed five scents specifically for the car

the upright face, the new grille with the large brand badge in the middle and headlights similar to the recent CLS including LED indicator lights.

Reports indicate that Mercedes-Benz plans to offer the next S-Class range with lots of hybrid options. That would include a plug-in hybrid based on the S 500 Vision Concept with a 3.0 liter V6 and a 44 kW (60 PS) electric motor good for a fuel-economy rating of just 3.0 liters/100 km (78 mpg) while providing the S-Class with a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time under 6 seconds.

High-tech cabin secrets of new Mercedes-Benz S-class revealed

The all-new Mercedes-Benz S-class has been launched from the inside out. The increasing importance of the Asian market for traditional luxury saloons, as the West shifts towards luxury SUVs, means that the new S-class — codenamed W222 — has been designed with an emphasis on rear-seat passengers and what Mercedes bosses call the “essence of luxury”.

The first information released about W222 has centred entirely on the interior, but our spy photographer has still managed to capture its exterior undisguised.

Re: Mercedes Benz New S-Class Spied (2013)

Mercedes makes new S class leaner, greener

The new Mercedes-Benz S class is 100kg lighter than the model it will replace and its greenest variant will emit less CO2 than a Smart ForTwo.

The brand's flagship sedan also has six eyes (cameras) and six ears (radar sensors) that allow it to see and hear enough to drive itself at speeds up to 60kph.

"It may sound like Frankenstein, but it's considerably better looking," Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche said during the S-class launch here on Wednesday.

Mercedes hopes that the S-class's powertrain, technology and safety upgrades will help it remain the world's top-selling upper-premium sedan, a title Mercedes says the car has had for eight consecutive years.

Money-maker

The automaker also hopes the S class will help Mercedes meet Zetsche's goal of regaining the No. 1 spot in global luxury cars sales by the end of the decade. BMW passed Mercedes for No. 1 in 2005 and Audi pushed the Stuttgart-based automaker to third place in 2011.

Mercedes also trails its rivals financially. While Mercedes achieved an operating margin of 7.1 percent last year, BMW's margin was 10.9 percent and Audi's was 11 percent.

In October, Zetsche scrapped mid-term margin targets that were supposed to be achieved in 2013, and last month said his revised full-year guidance from February would also not be met. The disappointing results mean that even more will be expected of the S class, which analysts estimate makes Mercedes double-digit returns on each model sold, although the true figure is a closely guarded secret.

"We invested massively in the new S-class ... more Mercedes than an S class isn't possible," Zetsche said.

Tech center

The S class has traditionally served as the showcase for Mercedes parent Daimler's latest technology, including safety features that the automaker helped pioneer.

The S class that debuted in 1978 was the first car in the world to offer ABS, for example.

Daimler says that the new S-class's 6-D technology dubbed Intelligent Drive will be standard. The system uses six cameras and six radar sensors and a proprietary algorithm to give the vehicle "eyes and ears" that cover 360 degrees. This helps the car automatically adjust its handling to the street surface and anticipates the direction of movement of other cars as well as cyclists and pedestrians.

The new S class goes on sale in Europe starting in July at an after-tax base price of 79,790 euros in Germany. The new-generation S350 BlueTEC diesel will cost about 3,330 euros more than the previous-generation model with the same powertrain.

Super-low CO2

While the new and old versions each are powered by a V-6 with 258 hp, the new model's CO2 emissions decrease to a low of 148 grams per kilometer from 164g/km and fuel consumption improves to a top rating of 5.0 liters per 100km from 6.2l/100km.

Later, Mercedes will offer even more fuel-efficient versions of the S class. The S300 BlueTec diesel hybrid will consume as little at 4.4l/100km and emit 115g/km of CO2 and the S500 plug-in hybrid will offer fuel consumption of around 3.0l/100km and CO2 emission of less than 75g/km, Mercedes said. By comparison, the two-seat Smart ForTwo diesel's best CO2 result is 86g/km.

Said Mercedes r&d chief Thomas Weber: "These figures prove that the S class is our most important pacesetter on the road to zero-emissions driving."

Six body styles

The new S-class, which is the sixth-generation of car, also will take on an even more important role now that it will also replace Daimler's failed Maybach ultra-luxury brand at top of the company's pyramid.

Zetsche revealed in November 2011 that the Maybach brand would be discontinued and replaced by new S-class body styles, which are set to grow to six with the new generation from three (the sedan, a long-wheelbase sedan and coupe).

A larger and longer S class, widely expected to be called the Pullman, will compete head on with Rolls-Royce and Bentley for the hearts of the super rich.

The S class is a critical product launch for a company struggling to make a dent in the lead that rivals BMW and Audi enjoy in sales and profit.

"Image-wise the S class is the vehicle that most personifies Mercedes-Benz. If they get it wrong, it could damage the brand and all the vehicles under it," said Christoph Stuermer, research director at IHS Automotive in Frankfurt. "Three generations ago (in 1991) they screwed up the S-class and it nearly put the company on the brink, that's how important a role it plays."

Star-studded debut for Benz S-Class

Mercedes-Benz brought together singer-songwriter superstar Alicia Keys, mystery Top Gear driver the Stig, five German star-rated chefs, and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra recently for a glitzy world debut of the next-generation full-size S-Class sedan.

The Mercedes flagship – which will arrive in Canadian showrooms in November – will once again offer 4MATIC all-wheel drive, diesel, AMG and hybrid versions, but the company also revealed that it is working on a plug-in hybrid that would pull down fuel consumption to Prius-like levels, said Mercedes-Benz Canada president Tim Reuss at the event.

The swanky introduction took place in a converted Airbus hangar in Hamburg, Germany, where plane “keys” are normally handed over to new customers. The presentation itself was a unique indoor and outdoor combination, the hangar transformed into an upscale theatre with a stage that opened up to reveal the white-suited Stig outdoors, in the pouring rain, with Airbus’ A380 double-decker flagship in the background. That rain didn’t stop the fireworks or fireballs from blazing, as the entire Mercedes-Benz lineup parted to allow the new and now wet S-Class to triumphantly drive onto the covered stage – with R&B star Keys as its passenger.

She stepped out to perform two songs with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, before the crowd dispersed to examine the new S-Class, as well as sample the signature works of five highly rated German chefs, with Mercedes-Benz hailing the event as a unique one-night, 10-star evening.

The S-Class will debut a number of advanced technologies that will likely filter down to other Benz models later, and perhaps other vehicles. Perhaps the most spacey is the “Distronic Plus with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot,” which is meant to lessen the monotony of clogged traffic by slowing down, stopping and commencing acceleration all automatically, while also being able to manoeuvre the car side-to-side in gentle bends enough to stay within its lane at up to 60 km/h. The system can temporarily work without a driver’s hands on the wheel, but after 30 seconds, a warning sounds to remind drivers to take control of the wheel again.

The S-Class also offers autonomous braking with its Pre-Safe Brake system at up to 50 km/h, if the two stereo cameras detect incoming pedestrians or another vehicle. The S-Class claims to be the first vehicle with only LED lights, inside as well as outside the vehicle. The two cameras and the radar sensors also scan the road surface ahead, with the available Magic Body Control instantly adjusting the suspension to smooth out the imperfections.

The S63 AMG model that will arrive in February 2014 will be all-wheel drive only in Canada, said Reuss, with a performance-oriented set-up that sends the majority of power to the rear wheels.
