As usual, we have 5 families (all Senior Citizen) decided to take another family tour during the 1st week of January 2019, but due to some emergency /urgent commitment to a couple of our members the tour was postponed to February 2019.

We have hired a 14 seater Force Travller (though we have only 10 people altogether) and the departure date was set for the 2nd of February early morning (5:15AM). The ride arrived on time and picked up all members from their respective homes and the journey begins.

First halt for breakfast was just before calicut, a place called Chemanchery and the hotel name was SAR Arcade. The route we have taken was Kannur/Calicut/Malappuram/Perinthalmanna/Palakkad/Pollachi/Madurai.

Reached Madurai around 9:00PM and managed to get accommodation at Jeyasakthi Hotel, just 4kms before the Temple. The next door of the hotel was the Thalappakati Hotel (Thalappakati Biriyani has been very famous) and we all had Biriyani at that hotel.

Day-2
The next morning we left the hotel at 7:00 AM and proceeded towards the Meenakshi Temple. We had to park our traveller in the parking lot (Ellis Nagar parking area near Periyar Bus stand) and then to catch a government bus to the temple (The bus service is only to Temple and back to the parking area and they charge Rs.25 per head for up and down travel).

There was a long queue at the Temple (South Tower Entrance). There was also paid queue (Rs.100 & 50) but we all preferred to be in the normal queue for the Darshan. Mobile phones, Chargers, Power Banks, Baggages etc. was not allowed inside the temple and had to keep it in the clock room which is available in all 4 tower entrances. It took around 2 hours to get Darshan, thereafter we all had breakfast just outside the entrance and then proceeded to the bus stand to catch the return bus and reached the parking area where our Travaller was parked. We then continued our journey towards Rameswaram.

Lunch was taken at the Thai Chettinadu Mess on Ramewsaram Road, Mandapam, where there was a big crowd, but managed to get seats for all our members and had a quick bite. The food was not that good but OK. Continued the journey and next we stopped to enjoy the beauty of Pamban Bridge.

We got down from the traveller and then walked all the way to the other end on the bridge as our driver was a little worried about Police checking as there was a parking restriction on the bridge.

We then stopped at Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam National Memorial in Rameshwaram. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam National Memorial was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India Shri. Narendra Modi on 27th July, 2017.

About the Memorial - Spread over 2.11 acres of land, the memorial is constructed on the gravesite of Dr. Kalam, where his mortal remnants were put to rest on July 27, 2015. In order to pay tribute to India’s missile man, The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), with which Dr. Kalam had been associated for several years of his life, came up with an initiative to construct his memorial. And with an investment of Rs 120 crore, its construction had been completed in a record time of just 9 months.

We spent around 30 minutes here (not enough, but we need to move to the other point, hence could not spend more time at the memorial), and then proceeded towards Rameswaram. Our idea was to stay at Rameswaram and see all other places. As such, we started searching decent hotels, but unable locate a good budget hotel (hotels available, but the rate they were asking was bit high i.e. above 2500 per couple per night), may be due to Sunday and there was heavy rush.

After checking few hotels around, we dropped idea of staying at Rameswaram instead decided to find a hotel on our way. We then visited Ramanathan Swamy Temple and started our journey towards Vellore.

As in the case of other Temples, no mobile or camera allowed inside the temple, hence could not take more pictures .

We reached Devakottai at around 9:30Pm and spent the night there (medium budget hotel - Rs.700 non-a/c rooms). (our idea was to drive up to Karaikudi and stay there, butsince the roads were bad we know that we will reach Karaikudi only in the midnight which may put us in difficult to get hotel rooms in that hour.)

That's end of Day 2

Day-3

We left Devakottai in the morning around 8 AM (after breakfast) and the next attraction we planned was Golden Temple at Sripuram, Vellore. It was a good 400kms drive. After a couple of breaks for refreshments and Lunch, finally we reached Sripuram at 7:20PM (We were a bit disappointed as some guys told us that the temple entry closes at 7:30PM,).

We lost around 90 minutes as there was some problem with our traveller, which has to be taken care of (some leak in exhaust pipe) and luckily there was Force service station en route and we explained our urgency to them who stopped all other works which they were doing and attended our work on priority - Thanks to Force guys.!

Since we were aware that mobile phones and baggages were not allowed, we kept all such things in the traveller and entered the temple queue which was almost empty, but still we had to walk over a lot of distance through the barricades and coverings kept to control the queue before reaching main area. What a scene it was - Its a must see temple which is totally built/covered with gold.

About the Temple: The salient feature of the temple is the Lakshmi Narayani Temple or Mahalakshmi Temple, whose 'Vimanam' and 'Ardha Mandapam' have been coated with pure gold both in the interior and exterior of the temple. It is estimated that over 600 crores of Indian Rupees was spent to construct this Golden Temple for Goddess Mahalakshmi .

It took about one hour for a quick visit to the temple (normally it would have been much more), since it is almost closing time of the temple. We all are happy as it is worth a visit temple.

We then left Sripuram and drove towards Vellore (around 8 km) and then started searching hotels in Vellore. Since we are new to the place and not sure where hotels are located and as such we lost about 45 minutes before finding a hotel, Annamalaiyar Residency in the new Katpadi Road (near the bus stand.). The Tariff for an A/C Room was close to Rs.2000 but we negotiated down to Rs.1200 per room. Had dinner there itself and thats end of day 3.

Day-4

We left the hotel 6:30 AM and our next destination was Tirupati. After running around 50 km, We stopped for a quick breakfast (reporting time at Tirupati as per e-Darshan ticket booking was at 12:00PM hence we don't want to waste any time enroute).

We already decided not to take our traveller to Tirumala for reason mainly the driver is new to Tirumala and may not reach the spot without wasting time. So, we reached the TTD parking place in Tirupati (parking is free there) and parked the traveller there. The moment we entered the parking area, one sumo driver approached us with the deal to carry all of us to the top and showing 5 temple points including Tirumala and asked Rs.350 per head. We didn't have time to spend all the time at Tirumala hence we settled for Rs.300 per head only to visit Tirumala and drop us back to the parking area.

So, we started our journey on his old Sumo (bit difficult to accommodate 11 people (including the driver) and started climbing the hill. At the entrance there was a security check for which we all have to get down from the vehicle, walked down for a scan/security check and then the vehicle will be checked without any baggage or people in it and then passengers will have board again after the security check was over .

Among our group, there was a senior Citizen (65 year old - as per TTD), so the driver first stopped at Senior citizen queue area and guided the Senior citizen guy and his wife and then took us to the next spot where we all have to enter (Rs.300 ticket holders). We left all our footwears on the Sumo and the driver already shown our guys where he will be parked and how to reach there after Darshan.

It took about 3 hours to get Darshan and came out to collect free laddu's. After collecting the laddu's, we all went to the Annandanam hall and had annadanam (nice food). Finally, located the sumo driver and came down to Tirupati parking area around 4:30PM. There was a decent hotel opposite the entrance of the parking area where we settled for that night.
In the evening our ladies have some shopping near the Railway station area and that's the end of Day 4

Note: Unable to take any pictures since no one carried camera/mobile phones to Tirumala as such things are not allowed in that area.

Day - 5

Left Tirupati in the morning towards Wayanad (Kerala). Tirupati to Wayanad about 550km which we don't want to go at one stretch hence we decided to break some where close to Mysore. As such, we stopped our journey in Mandya and stayed there. Nothing much happened on the 5th day.

Day - 6

We left Mandya early in the morning and reached Muthanga at 11:45AM but unfortunately the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary safari was closed at 11AM and next one was available at 3PM (entry to the sanctuary has to be done by forest department Jeep and no private vehicles are allowed. The last safari in the morning is 11 AM and then the afternoon safari starts at 3PM. (We were not aware of this timing hence lost the opportunity to visit the place).

We all wanted to reach home on that day itself, hence did not want to waste further time, waiting till 3 PM for the afternoon safari.

We then proceeded to Kalpetta to see the Edakkal Caves. Edakkal Caves are two natural caves at a remote location at Edakkal, 25 km from Kalpetta in the Wayanad district of Kerala in India's Western Ghats. They lie 1200 m above sea level. It was not that easy to climb, especially for old people like us, but still all of us climbed, when even youngsters were struggling.

After spending some time at the top of the caves, we all started to climb down which felt a bit difficult than climbing up for few, next we went to the Banasura Sagar Dam, located 21km from Kalpetta, Wayanad. Unfortunately, by the time we reached, the Dam entry was closed (Closure time 5:45Pm). We spent a few minutes in that vicinity and left for our final return journey.

After a lengthy and tiresome 6 day journey, we all reached home Mid night/little after midnight on 7th February.

We were aware, the distance we had to cover in between our selected locations were a bit long, but it all happened to just to cover Tirupati and the Golden Temple at Sripuram. If one asks me which one is most admirable - then my answer would be 'Golden Temple'' - No doubt.

Thanks for reading[:)]

Lovely travelogue with some excellent pictures of temples. The Pamban bridge looks very nice. The area is still in my bucket list [:)]
