General Motors India plans a Spark version with an 800 cc petrol engine. It will challenge the mighty little Alto from Maruti Suzuki and the still smaller Nano from Tata Motors.

“The 800 cc Spark is on the drawing board,” P Balendran, vice-president of General Motors India told Financial Chronicle.

But there is a caveat: if 1,000 cc Spark as well as the just introduced 1,200 cc Beat sell well this year, the 800 cc Spark may not happen, indicating that the lower-engine capacity version is just rearguard action in the event of the other models not doing well.

“If we achieve the desired volumes, (with the Beat and the Spark), we will not foray into the 800 cc category,” Balendran said.

RSM,

I should say GM is playing defensively for its small car sales strategies. As we know inspite of GM's various offers--- 3 years unlimited free servicing,etc..it is unable to stand up high in the tough hatchback competition with hyundai and suzuki,so its a good step to introduce hatches in lower end, middle and top end segments of hatches.Hope it helps them to increase their sales for hatches, overally[:)]

Its a good move by GM.
I may sound a bit over optimistic but here is what I think GM should do.
Bring in the 800CC Spark as an entry level hatch. Then in the price band just above it comes the Beat which can take on the i10s and the Ritzs head on.
Upgrade the boring U-VA with a 1.3ltr multijet and other cosmetic changes as well to take on the Swift and the other premium hatches. [:D]

GM is really launching spark 800cc.
Karl Slym, President and Managing Director of GM India -
We have a small-engine Spark available in the overseas market and are looking to bring it to India in the next 24 months
currently spark is priced near to alto. so will 800cc cost as much as nano??

Re: Fuel Prices Reaching Sky High!!

As per the reports, the plans for Chevrolet Spark has been put to halt. Additionally during the reveal ceremony of Electric Beat, there was non mention of the car coming into production. So for now both these car don't seem to launch in their electric versions.

Re: 800cc Spark on GM’s drawing board

If They release the same 3 pot 800cc (from Matiz eh he he ) which gave some 4 Pots Some Testing times !!, Matiz Owners will get the Engine Spare parts from Chevy as they both will be The Same.If They Price it under 2.7 Lakhs, It Will Definetly give all Others a Tough Competition and KILL some Marutis. And Yup they also should design a diesel 800 cc.
