Hello ! I am fortunate to live in Dehradun since last 11 years. Dehradun is a great place to live. It is full of serenity, surrounded by beautiful places all around. And they say, "If you live here once, you'll love it forever". Many of you know Mussourie, Haridwar, Rishikesh as tourist destinations, all these are at a stone's throw from Dehradun. These places are crowded, packed all the time. I, being a local don't like these places too much for the obvious reasons. So in this thread, I will try to introduce you to some places which I prefer to visit in my weekends. And, which I would suggest you to visit as well when you're in this part of Uttarakhand. I will skip Mussourie, Haridwar, Rishikesh etc. as these places has been fairly covered in many online travelogues.

Mussourie-Tehri Bypass road: While going towards Mussourie on Dehradun-Mussourie road, just a few kms before reaching Mussourie you'll see a sign board directing towards Dhanaulti towards the right this is Tehri bypass road which leads to Dhanaulti as well as Chamba(Tehri). This road is very scenic, it has less traffic even in the peak season. This road sees snowfall every winter. One can stop on roadside and enjoy the tranquility and scenic beauty of this route. Dhanaulti, Kanatal, Surkanda Temple etc. are some tourist spots on this road.

Road is though a bit narrow and full of curves, but is smooth throughout.

Surkanda Devi Temple: This road has some great tourist destinations on it. The one I like the most is Surkanda Devi Temple. It is a hindu temple situated at a peak of a hill. Just a few kms from Dhanaulti. You need to park your vehicle at a place called Kaddukhal. From there, by tracking for around 45 minutes you'll reach the temple. Temple is beautifully built, with equally beautiful snow-clad mountains in the backdrop. The aura of the place is very special, one seeking some moments of inner peace should visit this place at least once.

Track for the temple is well paved.

Dhanaulti: On the same Mussourie-Tehri bypass, around 24 kms from Mussourie is Dhanaulti. Dhanaulti is always colder than Mussorie due to its higher altitude and dense coniferous vegetation around it. Dhanaulti is cool even in June and you may feel the cold shiver in any season here. There is an eco park, a few hotels and a few adventure sport spots in Dhanaulti. Dhanaulti gets the heavy snowfall in every winter and is packed with tourists during snowfall.

Tehri Lake: The Mussourie-Tehri bypass ends at Chamba(Official name: Chamma). From there, one road goes to Rishikesh and another leads to Tehri Lake. Tehri was an old town located at the confluence of Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers. It was once the capital of princely state of Garhwal Kingdom. After construction of Tehri Dam project, the old town was completely submerged and people were shifted to New Tehri.
Now, the reservoir of Tehri dam is a large and beautiful lake. The site is being developed as a tourist and water sport destination. New hotels are being built around the lake and also there are floating huts to stay. Water sports has powerboats, kayaking, jet skiing etc. Tehri lake is around 110 kms from Dehradun. One can cover Dhanaulti, Tehri lake in a single day.
