The Pune-Mathern Trip:
We visited Matheran last weekend (01-Nov-2014).
The route we followed:
By Car: Pune > MumbaiPuneExpressway > KhopoliExit > Karjat >Neral* > AmanLodge*
By Feet: AmanLodge>Matheran
By Horse: Around Mahteran
By Toy Train: Matheran lodge>AmanLodge#
By Car: AmanLodge>Pune
Advices: If you are coming from Pune (or even Mumbai) come by train, as coming from car would not be advisable. We found this the hard way.
1. *About 15 Km of stretch from Khapoli to Neral is not in good condition. And this might be an understatement.
2. *It can prove to be quite a task to (safely) park a car in Neral. Unless your close friend lives in Neral, the likelihood of that isn't much I guess
3. *Neral to Aman Lodge, is a difficult-to-drive terrain. If you are even slightly unsure about your diving skills don't try (dare) drive from Neral to Aman Lodge.
Touts, which are there in abundance, are irritating, as they anywhere else are. So, if you are going there in search of peace, don’t go on a weekend. People say, it’s quieter in matheran on weekdays. Talking about the toy train, in a colder or wet season, the toy train experience would, I think, be better than it was in hot and dry season. Anyways, try the toy train, if not for anything else then just for doing it once.
The points (sightseeing points) are too many. 38 to be precise. We decided to skip a few of them. 25 to be precise. Actually after seeing two or three points it seemed like there is no point. Just for clarification, I am not a sightseeing enthusiast
