Dear All,
This is my second TL and thanks for the encouragement for my first one 'Ooty in Renault Duster'.
Why was it titled Sudden trip ?
On 27Jul, Sunday around 10am decided to go out of Chennai for two day's trip. Checked for Pondy in sea view resorts however the room tariffs were sky rocketing and eventually have to drop the idea. Suddenly it came to my mind that we haven't gone to Yelagiri yet, why not ? Checked for Sterling and no rooms were available. Did review of Trip advisor and found Peter's Cottage resort as the #1 resort there. Called up and checked with them, rooms were available however the tariff was inclusive of food including your breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner. There was one more reason to decide this place as they were not entertaining bachelors and purely it is only for families.
Packed few stuff in the bag and left at 11.45am, went straight to fill diesel. The diesel fill was approx. 42 ltrs. The traffic was comparatively dense till Thiruverkadu junction on the Poonamallee High Road. Stopped for lunch at Motel Highway near Thirumazhisai.
Started at 1.30pm and the road tarmac was uneven till we crossed Kanchipuram for almost 50kms. Not sure why we are paying a toll, is it for a roller coaster ride ?
There seems to be no improvement from last Dec 2013 when I went to Bangalore - Jog Falls - Murudeshwar - Goa - Mumbai - Chennai. While coming back from Chennai - Kolhapur - Chennai trip in Jan14, was told by one of the toll attendant that they would relay the roads very soon. Nothing seems to have been done for the last 8-9 months. Beyond Kanchipuram, road eventually widens into 6 lane and Duster picks up speed. Mapmy India this time was guiding properly and we took appropriate left towards Yelagiri. Once you cross Ambur, it is better to keep on the left lane if someone is driving for the first time and do not have navigation. The left from NH4 towards Tirupattur is a two lane road and is broader enough to accommodate atleast 3 vehicles. Be mindful of the frequent speed brakers on this road, very painful.
Got into the ghat section at 4pm and within few minutes, the sky became dark. The ghat section is narrow and have to be careful while moving to the left if we have to give space for on coming vehicle. It started pouring heavily and one good thing was the no. of vehicles going towards and coming from Yelagiri were very few hence there was no problem. However I was behind a mini bus for quite sometime.
One important thing - do not stop your vehicle on the road to take pics as the roads are very narrow.
Reached the cottage around 4.45pm. The place was very nice. Food was very good.
Finished dinner around 8.30pm and retired to bed.
On 28th Jul, planned to visit the artificial lake and children's park. Went to the lake around 11am and took a rowing boat. There was an entry fee to get into the place and apart from that they charged Rs.150/- for boat ride. Bought some different fruits like star fruit, Anjeer etc., while walking back towards the parking lot.
Came to the main road and went straight into the Park. It was a huge park and was maintained well.
Returned to the room around 12.30pm, had our lunch and left for Chennai at 1.45pm. The weather was very pleasant throughout the trip. Stopped at CCD just before Sri Perumbudur for a coffee break. In next 30 mins, got into a huge traffic jam just before Sriperumbudur junction which swallowed almost 30 mins of time. Reached home at 6.15pm. Had booked tickets for an evening show at Satyam Cinemas on Monday wherein the movie starts at 7.15pm. Were on time to reach the theatre.
Route taken
Chennai - Poonamallee by pass - NH4 - Vellore - Ambur - Ponneri - Yelagiri
Total distance one way is 230 kms.
Mileage - 13.5 kmpl.
Not sure why the mileage was low compared to Ooty trip. This time let the Duster go beyond 140 plus on few occasions however was maintaining the speedo around 110.
Few things noticed in Duster - When you go beyond 120kph the wind noise seems to be high. Have anyone experienced this and is there a solution to it ?
Have uploaded few pictures.
Two lane road towards Yelagiri
A nice view of the mountain to your right
Ghat Road begins, be careful
Small Road leading to the resort
Inside of the resort and that's our cottage.
Drive towards Lake on next day
Few pictures of the lake during boating
Few pics of the Park
This field was very nice while coming back to the resort
Drive back to Chennai
Thanks for your time.
Regards
