In a first for the Indian two-wheeler sector, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has voluntarily recalled 11,500 units of the standard variant of its 250 cc premium motorcycle, the CBR 250R on account of a defective front brake system.

These models were produced between March 2011 and September 2012. HMSI will replace the 'front brake master cylinder assembly' in the bikes free of cost irrespective of the warranty status.

HMSI on Monday said there is a possibility of the front brakes being not fully effective. Yadvinder Singh Guleria, vice president, sales and marketing, HMSI told ET, "Although recalls are new in India, customers today are maturing fast and perceive recall positively." HMSI resorted to this recall after it found this problem occurring in eight of the 21,000 units it has sold so far.

Over the past couple of years, a number of carmakers including Toyota, Honda and Maruti Suzuki had resorted to recalls; the is the first time a two-wheeler manufacturer in the country has had to do the same.

Honda's passenger car operation in India, however, is no stranger to recalls. In September 2011, Honda Car India recalled 72,115 City sedans to replace defective power window switches. In early 2011 it recalled 57,853 third-generation City to replace a faulty engine part, as part of a global exercise. And in January 2010 it recalled 8,532 units of the City, CR-V SUV and Accord premium sedan for different technical faults.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, the apex body of autoplayers in India, has advised all its members to voluntary recall all or any number of vehicles having technical problems The voluntary recall code came into force from July 1 this year.

Unlike in the US and China where manufacturers are penalised for non-adherence of recall policy, in India there is no regulatory mechanism in place to compel vehicle manufacturers to take corrective action.
