KTM 390 Duke details confirmed - to be unveiled next month!

Powered by a 375cc, 45PS motor and weighing only 150kg, the bike will hit dealerships by March 2013[clap]

The Duke 390 would also be built in India as are the 125 and 200 Dukes, at Bajaj Auto's state-of-the-art Chakan facility and exported the world over. When it would be able to hit markets will only be known after its launch but expect it to hit markets globally in the second quarter of 2013. We are fairly sure that this bike would also be sold in India, just around the Rs 1.8 to Rs 2.0 lakh price point and sporting such a price tag it surely has the wherewithal to move the market dynamics drastically, among all bike makers in the land.

2013 KTM DUKE 390 LEAKED ONTO THE INTERWEB

Spyshots of what seems to be press briefing information have leaked onto the interweb and the KTM Duke 390 comes with very impressive specifications. What’s more, with hours to go for the curtains to rise on the 2012 EICMA motorcycle show, the Duke 390 is a motorcycle that has a very high possibility of being unwrapped at Milan. We’re saying this as the press briefing is in Italian, a dead give away of the motorcycle being addressed straight at the Italian press for starters and more so for the Milan bound motoring press.

KTM has unveiled Duke 390 at the 2012 EICMA Show in Milan, Italy. Duke 390 has got 373 cc single cylinder, 4-stroke, four valve, liquid cooled, DOHC engine which is capable enough of generating 44 bhp (32 KW) at 9,500 rpm and 35.25 Nm (26 lb-ft) at 7,250 rpm. Despite having bumper performance figure Duke 390 weighs only 139 Kg (150 Kg with full fuel tank). With power to weight ratio of 317 bhp/ tonne (293 bhp / tonne with full fuel tank), Duke 390 is nothing but a pocket size rocket.

Duke 390 is expected to have 25-30% better top speed compared to Duke 200, which means 170-180 Km/ hour is not so far. Despite having staggering performance figure and power to weight ratio, Duke 390 has got extremely fuel efficient engine too. Duke 390 engine weighs only 36 kg despite having 373 cubic capacity. It has also got a state-of-the-art Bosch 9M ABS which means a safer ride in all kind of condition. You can also switch off the ABS as and when require.

Duke 390 shares the same style, chassis, tyres, suspension, brakes and digital dashboard speedometer except some very minor changes like fuel tank capacity and seat height. At first glance, it’s just engine size and 390 symbol makes difference between Duke 390 and Duke 200. It appears that Duke 390 will give very tough fight to Honda’s CBR 500R in the international market.

Duke 390 will be produced at Bajaj Auto’ state-of-the art Chakan facility and will be exported to the worldwide. It is expected to be launched by March 2013 in India with the ex-showroom price of 2 – 2.5 lakhs.

CEO Stefan Pierer wants a KTM 180 Duke for India

KTM Bajaj relationship is surely doing a world of good to the Indian biking scene. The KTM 200 Duke has become a hot favourite of majority of Indian bikers and the KTM 390 Duke should be here before Honda decides to launch its 500cc bikes in India.

Now, the 390 might not be the only bike that is coming our way. KTM CEO Stefan Pierer has plans to boost volumes through a ‘smaller-than-200’ bike.

Stefan Pierer has said that the new bike might fall in the 180-190cc category. The KTM 180 Duke, if it ever becomes a reality, would be less equipped than the 200 and would help KTM India sell 100,000 motorcycles annually over the next 3-4 years.

KTM’s new India spec products will be developed in collaboration with Bajaj and the Austrian bike maker would stress on heavy localization to keep the costs under check.

The KTM 180cc bike will debut some time in 2014-2015

KTM 390 Duke Touring & Faired Variants to be Developed

Stefan Pierer has now confirmed that KTM plans to come up with a faired and touring versions of the recently unveiled KTM Duke 390. The KTM Duke 390, which was recently unveiled at EICMA, has been launched in European bike market and it is a matter of time before the new Katoom comes to our bike market.

Stefan Pierer has further said that the rapidly growing Indian bike market will witness the launch of a new KTM product every 6 months for the next 18 months. This simply means that the touring and faired version of the KTM 390 Duke will be introduced in our country.

The KTM Duke 390 Touring variant will come with a bigger fuel tank and wind protection along with slightly reworked ergonomics.

Europe's KTM counts on Bajaj JV; CEO Stefan Pierer wants to grow business in emerging markets

At 56, Stefan Pierer still likes riding his Enduro 350 cc on his favourite tarmac, which is off the beaten path, or offroading, as enthusiasts of such cross-country riding call it. He also finds time to attend 15 to 20 such races through the year.

These days, however, the sights of the CEO of KTM, Europe's second-largest motorbike maker, are trained firmly on the road - particularly those of emerging markets like India.

With good reason. Pierer's goal is to make KTM Europe's No 1 bike maker, a position currently occupied by BMW. The German automaker is headed for sales of roughly 105,000 units in 2012; KTM is expected to come within striking distance with 100,000 units, up from 83,000 in the previous year.

Of those 100,000 units, 40,000 are expected to be on-road bikes. Half of those on-roaders will be made in the factories of domestic partner Bajaj Auto, which is the secondlargest shareholder in KTM with a 47.27% stake.

Pierer along with Rudolf Knuenz holds a controlling stake through a holding company. Four years ago, in the wake of the global credit crisis, Pierer realised that his Indian partner could well be key to KTM's survival as sales dropped by almost 30%.

"We needed a strong back-up. And Rajiv Bajaj, managing director of Bajaj Auto, proved to be a great support. He told us not to worry and that Bajaj will stick by KTM," says Pierer, who was in India a few days ago to attend a quarterly board meeting of the joint venture (one of the four quarterly meetings is held in India).

A decade ago, KTM decided to go beyond its off-roading niche and become a more volumes-driven automaker with on-road bikes. The only way to that was to partner with a maker of bikes with lowerdisplacement engines - KTM bikes typically are in the engine range of 690 cc to 1190 cc. Enter Bajaj Auto in November 2007.

"We have found a good base and a good relationship in Bajaj . We have developed common engine platforms that both brands can use. This has allowed us to enter new market segments of smaller displacement bikes," says Pierer.

"With Honda coming in strongly in India, Bajaj Auto can use all our high-end technology to take on the Japanese," he adds. The smaller-displacement engines sit on two platforms - one for bikes in the 125 to 200 cc range; and the other for engines between 270 and 390 cc.

KTM 390 Duke variants planned

KTM and Bajaj’s upcoming 390 Duke has been shown at the EICMA show, Milan.

The 390 Duke is a naked, sporty streetbike, with flamboyant, aggressive styling and similar, contemporary lineage as on today’s small capacity Dukes. It’s confirmed the 390 Duke streetbike will reach India by mid 2013, the first of future variants built upon this common platform. The 390 Duke will be followed within 2013 by a Pulsar that uses the same 373.2cc engine. Also to come are a road-going faired-in KTM sportsbike, a relatively comfortable KTM touring 390 variant, and possibly even an on-off road Enduro 390 special. It’s impossible to speculate precise launch dates for any of these bikes at this stage, with development for these models still in its early stages.

The first 390 Duke streetbike uses a four-stroke, 373.2cc, single-cylinder, fuel-injected engine with dual overhead camshafts driving its four-valves. Transmission will be a six-speed, one-down, 5-up toe-shifted box. Furious performance is assured, the 390 Duke tipping the scales at 139kg (kerb), and producing prodigious peak power of 44bhp at 9500rpm.

A beefy, steel trellis frame will hold the 390 Duke together, with riders seated in an upright, still sporty riding posture. Fat upside-down front forks are standard, along with an alluminium alloy swingarm and monoshock rear suspension. There’s a radial mounted 300mm disc in front and 230mm rear disc brake, with ABS brakes on offer.

Expect the 390 Duke to be attractively priced at close to Rs 200,000.
