Buddies,

Most of us in our childhood have often seen a small yet cute and highly popular 2 wheeler called "Luna"/ "Moped". Many of us definitely would have owned one and have grown up riding on it. That era with the Luna was really worth cherishing. Mahindra, has taken an interesting plunge and has re-registered the "Luna" Brand once again. With TVS being in the segment as a undisputed leader as on date, it would be really worth to watch out how does Mahindra position and market the once popular and primary mode of transport "Luna" in a market that has now graduated to the RTRs, Pulsars, Passion.

Just like the revival of the Vespa Scooter that were also really popular in India, will the revival of the "Luna" by Mahindra be equally successful with the youth? Will it be able to catch the eye of the buyers?

Do share your thoughts!

IMO Luna will have a different set of buyers, and rare chance for it to be popular among youth. There are many people who use two wheelers just for a quick outing (buy milk, cigarettes etc etc) and not for long commutes. You can find many people keep an activa at home along with their big fat cars just for this purpose (though many of them are not really fans of 2 wheelers, only motive behind is to tackle the irritating road traffic atleast on such short rides). Remember almost all popular scooters in market nowadays costs 40K and above. So if rightly priced the luna will have a lot of takers. Another factor that might enhance the sales is the nostalgic value of luna. But most probably the iconic "tuttutru" sound of the old 2 stroke engine may give way to "vrooom". But who knows Luna may be just a name and nothing else is related to the cute old ride.

PS: I have seen 100s of lunas still running on roads in Tamilnadu in Coimbatore and near by towns, surprisingly many of them in mint condition. I think it may be a rare thing to find elsewhere in the country.

Good to see mahindra intrested to get back the nostalgic era of Luna back on roads.
I still remember the fun it was to drive this vehicle and mostly after the fuel gets over the option to pedal it till pump brings smile on my face remembering those days.
Its still not sure what mahindra is exactly working on apart from the Luna name with what engine specs, design its going to launch again.

This one is stillborn. And here's why:

Don't you think, people with extremely low running would prefer a Scooty, or even an Activa (at max) , over this?

Market dynamics have changed. People have changed. India isn't really that socialist nation anymore.

Still remember the day in year 2000, when I asked my father for a bike and a desktop computer. Dad said either bike or desktop. I have opted for desktop as my sisters LUNA was there at home, as she completed her education and got married.

Then my days started with LUNA, all my PG memories were with that super bike[:)].

Think a person with weight of 95 kg on LUNA (it was I at that period)[;)]. But to my bad luck I don’t even have a single snap of it.

Mahindra has re-registered the "Luna" brand recently under its 2-wheeler division. And if the technical specs are changed in future then a probable increase in displacement can be done and we may have a 75cc Luna as compared to original 50cc one.

Hey i just wanted to know if it is a 2 stroke or 4 stroke one. I doubt about 2 stroke engine as nobody is producing 2 stroke engines except TVS.

Cheers

There are 2 main concerns about the "Type" of engine i.e 2S or 4S one:

* Will emission norms permit in present scenario and secondly with a comparatively fragile structure will it be able to handle the speed that a 2S engine creates in comparison to 4S.

* Their chief competitor will be TVS. In terms of technical specs, how superior can Mahindra make this product compared to the TVS one is yet to be seen. Since TVS has 2S engines, it would be interesting to see if Mahindra can create same hype with a 4S or will they also follow the line and provide a 2S engine. But as reported earlier, the displacement is something that Mahindra would plan to increase in this product and I feel that this idea in itself would spice up the segment.

TVS CHAMP, TVS XL are still used in large numbers in rural area even today. as they are reliable, gives heavy mileage as required by rural Indian's. also very economical to acquire if im not wrong the on road cost in karnataka is 35,000 so if mahindra can come up with a competetive pricing say somewhere near 30-31k they will be winners if not sudden but gradually they will end up having more of the market share of this segment.

I think if mahindra comes out with a 4 stroke luna, it will be priced high. If it comes with a 2 stroke engine, it should be below 30 k. Can anyone remember what happened to 4 stroke hero puch (stepmatic) ? It flopped ! AFAIK, the main reason for failure is its engine. Its performance was no where near to original 2 stroke hero puch ! So, mahindra has to be very careful in deciding the engine type for iconic Luna !

Luna, the one I drove was a blue color.
My uncle said that it had petrol tank integrated with its frame.
Though it didn't beat the TVS 50 in performance (speed, pickup, torque), it did succeed at the mileage part.
It had a good exhaust note, at least better than TVS mopeds.

Mahindra to re-introduce Luna – Mahindra will be introducing a Peugeot moped for the Indian masses and it will be rebadged as Luna.
It could be a 50cc moped in India and this will be competing with the TVS range. Mahindra Two Wheelers is at the moment testing two 50cc mopeds and they will be named as Luna and Luna TFR. The original Luna also had 50cc engine. This moped will have a length of about 1600mm, a fuel tank capacity of about 5 litres and will weigh 41 kilograms.

Mahindra's will be looking at introducing these two new mopeds in 2016, and they will be displayed at the upcoming 2016 Auto Expo.

WHY MAHINDRA IS MOVING INTO LOWER SEGEMENT? [anger]

50CC moped segment has already been out of phase & mentality of INDIAN commuters.
Its time to move into new technology for FE & Performance, adding more safety features, and INDIAN automotive companies Mahindra, Hero are rather looking to find newer micro segment between 100 - 125 cc, 125- 150cc.

There are many things to innovate finding expensive alternative to ABS units, better rubber compound for making good tyres.
