The Nozza Grande will be competing against the Piaggio Vespa range and will be produced at Yamaha’s Chennai manufacturing plant.

Yamaha’s 125cc scooter was a long-standing mystery that the company managed to keep under wraps for quite some time now. Going by the codename 04X, it is now believed that the Nozza Grande 125cc scooter was caught testing for the first time in Chennai with minimal camouflage. Expected to be launched later this year in the country, the Nozza Grand originates from Vietnam where it went on sale last year and is likely to get a different nameplate when launched in India.
With the Yamaha Nozza Grande specifically designed for Asian markets, there is a thick chance that the scooter will come to India. A retro inspired design language coupled with striking modern lines defines the styling on the scooter. Compared to the Vietnam version, the spy shot showcases the scooter with a tweaked tail light cluster while the exposed engine will go down well with young audiences. There is also an abundant amount of chrome seen on the scooter, another +1 for the Indian masses.
In terms of powertrain, the Vietnam spec Yamaha Nozza Grande is powered by a 125cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine with fuel-injection. The scooter comes with telescopic front forks and spring loaded shocks along with drum brakes at the front and rear. Other features on the scooter include analog instrument console with digital display, LED pilot lamp and under seat storage light.
For the Vietnam version, the Yamaha Nozza Grande claims a fuel efficiency of 54 km/l and has been priced at around Rs. 84,000/- (Indian equivalent). For the Indian version though, the scooter is likely to miss out on fuel injection to keep costs in check. If launched in India, the Nozza Grande 125 will be competing against the Honda Activa 125, Suzuki Access, Piaggio Vespa and the upcoming line of 125cc scooters in the segment.

The automatic scooter space is the fastest growing segment in the Indian auto market at 21 percent this fiscal and Yamaha will surely want to capture a major chunk of this space before more manufacturers join the lineup. Expected to come with the impressive handling and riding dynamics seen on the Alpha and Ray models, the Nozza Grande will be a stellar offering which rivals need to watch out for in the country.

I could see the white reg plates in 2nd snap, means the vehicle is registered. So what test are they conducting after completing the homologation?

Yamaha Fascino

1.jpg

Yamaha launched the Fascino scooter in India last month priced at Rs. 52,500 (ex-showroom Delhi).

With the scooter segment growing way better than the motorcycle segment, almost every manufacturer is cashing in on it. Yamaha known for its performance oriented motorcycles also took a step towards this non-gear category and has been focusing on the volumes game by introducing new products in the scooter segment. As of now, Yamaha has 4 scooters in its portfolio which includes the Ray, Ray Z, Alpha & the latest Fascino.

Engine, performance & handling:

Powering the Yamaha Fascino is the same 113cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, SOHC, 2-valve petrol motor which is plonked in the Ray & Aplha scooters. This motor generates 7.1 PS of power @ 7,500 RPM & 8.1 Nm of torque @ 5,000 RPM matched to a V-belt automatic gearbox. Fuel is fed via a carburetor system and Yamaha claims that the Fascino can deliver up to 66 kmpl.

Fire up the Fascino and the scooter starts up without too much drama. Self-starter is quick, and the motor idles with very little / negligible vibrations. Engine NVH is at par with the segment. Exhaust note at idle is also very well muted.

Wring the throttle and the brisk performance will keep riders happy. Starting off from a signal won’t keep you caught in the typical CVT rubber band effect but rather help you make swift progress. We mentioned this before, that this motor from Yamaha is quite peppy and the throttle response feels very crisp. Low & mid range performance of the Fascino is very well suited for city riding. There’s ample torque available to continue the momentum. There’s no dull area in this engine and the scooter can revv all the way up to the top speed from a standstill. While doing so, the Fascino not only feels refined, but also reliable.

Highway performance however feels a bit strained, as is the case with many other 110cc class scooters. Beyond 90 – 95 kmph on the speedo, progress tapers down. High speed stability thanks to the telescopic front fork is decent.

The Fascino shares the same platform with the Ray & Alpha. The scooter feels light and zippy and is very easy to maneuver in traffic conditions. Turn-ins are quick and this makes it a very fun scooter around the corners. The Fascino is the lightest Yamaha scooter weighing 103 kg, 1 kg lesser than the Ray & Alpha. Suspension setup is ideal for Indian roads and the Fascino does not loose composure over potholes. However, hard bumps will surely share jerks with your body thanks to the stiffer front fork.
FE - 66kmpl (ARAI certified)

Let the pictures do the talking now. [clap]

Short test - ride review

- Peppy engine with linear power, gets going without a fuss

- Looks are subjective, appealed to me with the retro design head lamp unit

- Under seat storage is large

- Stiff ride on concrete surface

- Large handle mirrors, gives good view of whats coming behind you

- Comes with 2 years / 24k kms warranty, additional 3 years / 36k kms could be bought at Rs 555/-

- OTR in Pune - Rs 60k

The Yamaha Fascino Joins the Dark Side with the Darknight Edition

Yamaha-Fascino-Darknight-front-1200x675.jpg

Priced at INR 56,793 (Ex-showroom Delhi), the Darknight edition of the Fascino comes with a bunch of features that differentiate it from the regular Fascino model. Finished in a dark shade of black, the scooter comes with UBS and a maintenance-free battery as standard. The mechanical components remain unchanged and the scooter continues to draw power from the 113 cc single cylinder motor. This motor is good for 7 BHP and 8.1 Nm of torque which is just enough to ferry two adults in busy city streets.
