Re: Mahindra To Buy 51% Share in Peugeot Scooter Unit

Press Release from Mahindra
Mahindra Two Wheelers set to acquire 51% Stake in Peugeot Motocycles
Mumbai, India, October 7, 2014: Mahindra Two Wheelers Ltd. (MTWL), an unlisted subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra Limited and a part of the USD 16.5 billion Mahindra Group, has made a binding offer to acquire a 51% stake in Peugeot Motocycles (PMTC), part of the Euro 54 billion PSA Group based in France. PMTC (a.k.a. Peugeot Scooters), a key player in urban mobility in Europe for 116 years, is the oldest motorized two-wheeler manufacturer in the world. Peugeot Scooters offers one of the most comprehensive range of scooters and mopeds, from 50cc to 400cc, including the successful three wheeled scooter – Metropolis, in the European market.
The transaction between MTWL and PSA, subject to Works Council consultation, as part of the employee dialogue process and anti-trust law, would involve infusion of Euro 15 million into PMTC to finance projects implemented through the strategic partnership, and further sale of shares by PSA which would allow MTWL to take a 51% stake in PMTC.
Commenting on the development, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Executive Director, Mahindra & Mahindra said, “The coming together of Mahindra & Peugeot is a win-win for the two wheeler businesses of both companies. Mahindra would offer access to the India market, mass market product technology and competence in marketing while Peugeot brings premium range, a strong European footprint, and a globally recognized brand. This partnership would enable both MTWL and PMTC to speed their international expansion by driving synergies and leveraging respective strengths of both parties”.
Over the past few years, Mahindra has strengthened its position in the two wheeler segment globally. Mahindra Racing competes at the highest level of global motorcycle racing in the Moto3 category of MotoGP, while Mahindra GenZe recently revealed its electric two wheelers in the US market that offer sustainable urban transport solutions to a new generation of US consumers.
In addition, MTWL has introduced several innovative technologies in its award winning range, including recently launched GUSTO. MTWL also has sales and distribution operations in Latin America, Africa and South Asia. The company has assembly operations in many of these markets.
MTWL would support PMTC’s global growth plan and the brand building effort that enriches the "Frenchness" of the Peugeot brand. PSA would support the Brand and growth strategy by holding a minority share for a long term.
MTWL would be committed to the current leadership team at PMTC. This would be similar to the approach that Mahindra group has followed in other global transactions such as the acquisition of Korean automaker SsangYong.

Peugeot scooters spied in India

Mahindra Two-Wheelers has recently bought 51 percent stake in Peugeot Scooters, and has also invested Rs 114 crore to finance Peugeot, through their strategic partnership. It certainly looks like things are moving along as Mahindra has brought six scooters from Peugeot’s international scooter portfolio to its headquarters in Mumbai. However, these scooters are not confirmed for sale in the Indian market yet, and Mahindra is remaining tight lipped about the project at the moment.

Out of the range seen here, only a few scooters look suitable for our Indian mass market. However, only time will tell if Mahindra will actually bring them here or will continue to market them abroad. In which case, Mahindra may produce the scooters here and export them to foreign markets.

Viren Popli, Chief of Operations, Mahindra Two-Wheelers said, “At this time, we are not making any comment on the way forward plans as we are still in consolidation phase”. The company mentions their intent to reveal further information only in March 2015.

Let’s take a peek at the scooters spotted here.

Mahindra to cross-brand with Peugeot scooters -SCOOP

Mahindra has got a stake in Peugeot scooters and the Indian automaker has plans not just sell it in India, but in several other markets as well. Peugeot is the oldest existing two-wheeler brand as per Mahindra & Mahindra. The company is looking at introducing premium scooters in India, at a very affordable price. Hence, the company is working towards localising a few Peugeot scooters in India.

India plan:

Mahindra will also be looking at getting the VOX 110cc Peugeot scooter also at some point of time. This will be the first set of scooters that will be making their way into India. These will be categorised as premium scooters and there will be larger capacity scooters also coming in. There have been talks about Metropolis scooter coming in early 2016, but Dr Pawan Goenka, Executive Director, Mahindra & Mahindra stated, “At the moment, we have no confirmed plans. We are evaluating various products and making them affordable is the real challenge that we are facing at the moment.”

One of our sources close to the factory also reveals, “Mahindra even has plans to get into the moped segment. With Kinetic now a part of Mahindra & Mahindra, the company is looking back at getting Luna and Luna TFR. These will be the Peugeot VOGVS2Y mopeds and the VOX 110cc step-through. These are 50cc and will help the company to enter the rural segment.”

Peugeot has had a strong presence in the moped/step-through technology as well. Mahindra can easily cash on this in India, as the Luna brand was one of the most famous mopeds. The only hurdle is complete localisation, which isn’t a major challenge for a company with an Indian origin.

Overseas plan:

With Peugeot scooters, Mahindra is looking at capitalising on the US market as there is a lot of scope in that market. Today, the fastest growing scooter brand in North America is Vespa and with Peugeot’s brand history, Mahindra will want to compete with the Italian scooter brand. Mahindra is also looking at entering several other markets were the Peugeot brand is strong (in four-wheelers) like Vietnam, China and even North Africa or where Mahindra has an existence.

The company is looking at venturing into new markets also with Mahindra and Peugeot brands. In some it will enter as Mahindra, while the rest could be Peugeot. There shall be cross-branding as well, between the two brands.

Mahindra & Mahindra looking to introduce Peugeot Motorcycles in India

NEW DELHI: Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), which has struggled to get a foothold in the country's intensely competitive two-wheeler market, is looking to introduce some products of Peugeot Motorcycles, the French company in which it holds a majority stake.

M&M is in the process of synergising operations between Mahindra Two Wheelers (MTWL) and Peugeot Motorcycles (PMTC). Apart from product interventions in the scooters segment, Mahindra is looking at joint sourcing to optimise operations of the companies.
