The KTM Super Duke 1290 is the big daddy of all the Dukes. ‘Duke’ is the nameplate of the Austrian bike maker’s range of naked street fighters.

The elaborate international range currently starts at Duke 125 and goes all the way to the Super Duke 990. The Super Duke 1290 will sit at the very top as the flagship.

The good news is, KTM India is not gonna stop with the Duke 390. During yesterday’s launch presentation, the company announced its intention to expand the product portfolio in the future.

The Super Duke 1290 is one of that candidate which would enter India, not as a volume sportsbike but as a brand shaper. The wild looking naked beast will be sold in limited numbers in India.

The prototype shows the things to come. With a 1,195cc V-Twin powerhouse, the Super Duke is expected to have a power output well in the excess of 150bhp. That should result in insane performance figures.

The Super Duke will be competing with the likes of other superbikes like the Honda CBR 1000R, Yamaha FZ-1, etc. KTM is expected to import the bike as a CBU but given that the company has access to Bajaj’s Chakan plant, it could even toy the idea of assembling the superbike locally.

A local CKD assembly would definitely put KTM in the lead as far as pricing is concerned.

KTM Super Duke 1290 revealed in a dealer preview

The KTM 1290 Super Duke is the biggest and the baddest of the hooligans given birth by the Austrian two wheeler stalwart.

The concept version of the naked superbike was showcased at last year’s EICMA Show in Milan. The production version will grace this year’s EICMA which is scheduled to take place between 7th-10th of November. The engine and specifications will be revealed then.

Super Duke 1290 in a special livery for the US. In contrast to KTM’s traditional orange and black paint theme, the spacial livery is all about blue and white. The fuel tank decal depicts the American national flag and there is also an eagle emblem before the fuel filler cap.

The wheels are also painted in blue and white with lettering “USA”. Livery aside, the production version of the bike is almost similar to the prototype save for few changes.

The immediately noticeable change is the headlamp which adopts a sharp and edgy styling. The rider saddle is bigger than the prototype and the production model has a pillion seat. Another important change is the silencer which follows the conventional trajectory outside the chassis (The prototype has a small and much shorter unit).

The bike will be reaching dealerships worldwide by December this year. KTM India is following a bottom-up approach and is not likely to launch the Super Duke 1290 here anytime in the immediate future.

KTM Super Duke Coming - Q4 2015

KTM is expanding its product portfolio in India and a company’s channel partner, who refused to discontinue his identity, has confirmed that KTM will be introducing the 1290 Super Duke R by the end of 2015.

The Super Duke has a two-cylinder four-stroke 1301cc engine that generates 177bhp of power and weighs only 179 kilograms. The bike has an 18-litre tank and a good clearance too of 140mm. Expect the bike to come in to India as a complete body unit, at least initially. As there is no need for an ARAI certification (for bikes above 800cc), KTM will commence importing the bike immediately.

The Super Duke R could be launched around Diwali, as this is the time when many people take deliveries.

The price of the Super Duke should be about Rs 12-14 lakhs (on-road price). KTM will be filling the gap between the 390 and 1290 and reaching out to the mid-sized premium bike buyers too.
