Hello forum members,
I am planning a road trip with my wife for the coming long weekend

I need fellow members advice on deciding best route , possible accommodation options and facilities, must-visit places etc.
This is my "first" long drive, so I wanted to be on safe side in all possible ways but have very short time to finalize on my own.

so , below are details of the trip:
dates : 25th - 28th Dec ( can be stretched to 29th if required )
cities to visit : jaipur , jaisalmer
places to cover : jaipur city , jaisalmer and sand dunes
car : honda accord

my plan :
25th : leave Delhi in early morning hours and reach Jaipur ,take an accommodation and fresh-up, city tour , night stay
26th : leave Jaipur in early hours, reach Jaisalmer by 3PM ,take an accommodation and fresh-up, visit sand dunes, night stay
27th : Jaisalmer city tour , night stay
28th : leave jaisalmer in morning ,to reach Delhi ( with breaks when required )

points to consider:
1. Visiting Sand dunes is primary purpose of this trip
2. only myself will be driving

also , tell me how to prepare for long drives in regards to what to keep in car , like spares, puncture kit etc.. I have no idea about this !!!

so , guys , your inputs at this juncture will be very helpful .

thanks in advance [:)]

Here is a link for basic tools to be kept in the car: Link

Link for the important documents to be kept in car while driving.

NH8 road has Trailers, Containers and Heavy Vehicle Traffic so maintain a normal speed. At places Road construction/ extension is going on so be careful.

When you'll enter Jaipur, just ahead of Amity University, speed camera might be there so always be cautious of speed.

Suggest you to fill nitrogen in all Wheels including spare one.

Do get a general check-up of the vehicle done before leaving for the trip.

Keep emergency contact numbers handy dear.

Rest, All the best dear, do share your travelogue with us.

Regards

Akash

Hi Akash ,
Thanks for the links
Since its out-of-station trip , I will carry all originals
Regarding tools , I have spare tyre and tool kit that came with car, 1st aid kit , torch and charger. Battery is charged recently.
Will see if I can get few more important ones mentioned in the link

Also , went through this thread by ToughGuy

Car Care: Though Akash1886 has taken care of it, these are my checklists. Check the coolant and engine oil levels. Top up fuel tank and tires before tonight. Ensure PUC & Insurance papers are in order. Carry the Service Manual and contact number of Insurance Co. Its better to have the contact no of Service Advisor / Manager of the service center you visited recently.

Route Care: A print out of the route map and a table of distances between major towns will give you more assurance. Ensure you sleep well tonight. Drive at a speed you are comfy.

Route: A colleague who went to Jaisalmer 2 months back said road is good (I'm attenuating; he said very good). My memory is that it is mostly a boring route with a lot of Straights. Sunset in Sam Sand Dunes is around 5:30PM in Dec. So reach there by 4PM to enjoy a Camel ride and to have general fun running down the dunes.

Wish you a happy trip.

Hello Manish ,
I was going through the forum and in another thread ,
Road from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur was in fantastic shape except 60km around Jodhpur which was in pathetic state due to stone mining work, i suggest NH15+MDR32 instead of NH15+NH114 which i took.
But this was in Jan 2013. So, what you were saying in present condition ?
And google maps does show this route only when I drag that small circle onto Ajmer

planning to cover important ones of below :
1. Amer fort
2. Jaigarh fort
3. Kanak Vrindavan
4. Jal mahal,
5. City Palace,
6. Hawa mahal,
7. Jaipur Zoo,
8. Bapu bazaar
9. Chowki Dhani

Jaipur - Jaiselmer
route : Jaipur - ajmer - beawar- jodhpur - jaisalmer
planning to cover important ones of below :
"Sam sand dunes"
1. Gadisar lake
2. Jaisalmer fortress
3. Patwaon ki haveli
4. Kuldhara village - ghost town
5. The thar heritage museum
6. Tanot, BP 609 and Longewalla

Jaisalmer - Delhi (with a long break at Bikaner)
route : - Jaisalmer - Pokaran - Phalodi ( suggested by google maps)
planning to cover important ones at Bikaner :

bikaner-kolayat is one more places you should visit and is on the way to bikaner

Hello black accord,

Below are my bit:

Day:-1

Even if you early from Delhi say 4:00AM you can manage to reach Jaipur in 5-6 hours (considering fog it may take couple of more hours), you need entire day and a half to cover the listings. I suggest you to add one more day in this, if not possible then skip Jaipur zoo, Kanak Vrindavan, To cover both Amer fort and Jaigarh fort in this tight schedule is tough skip Jaigarh fort. I traveled till Ajmer 4-5 times in last couple of months due to office work.

Put city place in last then Bapu market, try to reach Chokhi Dhani before sunset if not so then skip it too.

Day:-2

For sand dunes visit leave Jaipur before 4:00AM, fog disappears after Jaipur head straight for Sam sand dunes remember to reach here before sunset to enjoy this place. Try Rajasthan tourism accommodation having permanent structure located near barrier which is last point till where you can drive. If you find them full then try tented accommodations and bargain hard.

Day:3

You need this day for Jaisalmer city tour

Day:4

You can't drive till Delhi from Jaisalmer and cover places too in a single day, if you want to cover the listings then add one more day else only drive remember it's a very very long drive.

Hope you find above info just in time, sorry for late reply.

Regards,
TG

Hi manish,
It would be great if you can provide Google maps reference of the bypass road :please:
And jodhpur will be in my next trip to RJ along with udaipur and Mt.Abu

My 1st day plan is ruined by fog and truck traffic.
I left delhi at 5am and reached Jaipur around 12 noon.
Anyways, I will put my trip details after my trip is completed.
And yes, my plan is to leave jaipur around 4am so as to reach dunes by atleast 4pm

Hello ToughGuy,
Your previous travelogues were awesome and very detailed. And as you suggested, I will drive straight to dunes and try to get accommodation there.
