This information is related to paying taxes for driving in peak hours, but in case, you find this thread not suitable for this section, please feel free to move it to the more relevant one. Thanks in Advance..

Vehicle owners may need to shell out 'congestion charges' to drive during peak hours, if a proposal by the urban development (UD) ministry is accepted by state governments.

Modelled on similar rules in London and Singapore, the ministry is considering introducing these charges in a bid to de-congest some of the busiest central business areas across cities,

In London for instance, a congestion charge is imposed in a 20-square km area around the city centre using automatic number plate-recognition cameras at 348 entry sites. Vehicle owners entering the charging zone can either pay online through mobile phones or at specific stores.
Sudhir Krishna, UD secretary had written to all the state chief secretaries to "consider adapting congestion charging system as a measure to decongest central business districts" as well as to "control pollution."
The ministry has asked states to identify the most congested areas in their cities and get a study done on various aspects of the congestion charges as per the requirement.

The technical aspects, such as the amount to be charged and where to charge it, have to be worked out by the state governments as transport is a state subject. "To start with, we may have the manual permit/coupon system as was done in Singapore when it was first introduced," Krishsna's January 15 letter to chief secretaries.

But the ministry feels that the "most desirable and effective way" would be online payment /SMS/ prepaid payment based on vehicle identification through cameras or boxes installed in cars.

If this is true - its totally unacceptable

Re: You May Have To Pay For Driving in Peak-Hour Traffic!

This is not a viable solution without proper public infrastructure in place that has minimum comfort for every passenger, the reason for so many cars is the comfort they give to the commuter. Charging people for driving in peak hours is not a right move, this is again a way of filling their coffers and offering nothing solid in return. We are NOT Singapore where public transport and infra is 100 times ahead of us & can these people stop comparing our cities to that of Singapore and other cities that have better roads and public transport?

bloody hell, first they are going to study the places where congestion happens most, then they will come up with some plan. this itself will take years to do. After that as a pilot tests, they will do the manual ticketing like toll booth, this itself will create more congestion and traffic during peak hours. [frustration]. When will this people understand, that the problem is not traffic or population. problem is centralisation of the economy at ceertain places only (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, etc.). If we de centralised the sectors across the city, so people from other states and city don't have to travle to new city in search of the job.

Our country is such that : Fresh air also might be taxed soon !

First ask the government to build good infrastructure before even thinking of this

The morons in Govt should first see infrastructure & corruption in developed countries & then think about implementing these things here. Very, very few areas of Pune had road widening in past 10 years & the widened road is also now occupied for parking & by hawkers. [anger]

These ministers should first use public transport than taking convoy of 10-30 cars, isn't this causing traffic jams due to road blocks & waste of fuel ?

And if this rule become reality, I will put a flag of ruling party on car, & won't pay single paisa. [lol]

This will only create a havoc situation with the traffic if done in the peak hours. Having said that, if implemented in a manner as in Singapore or other places, it will definitely decongest the traffic. People might prefer traveling in public transport rather getting into mess.

Its a bizzare idea. [anger]

These crooks should first provide:-

- comfortable, clean, well maintained and RELIABLE public transport

- good roads with NO POT HOLES!

- in case they do not want to let go the toll-booths, replace them with E-tickets, to let the vehicle move without having to stop and create long queues

- proper planning and implementation of signals, and after implementing, KINDLY MAINTAIN their working!

- TEACH DRIVING ETHICS @ foundation itself (driving schools!!!) [frustration]

- proper parking lots in important business and tourist zones

A matter of fact is that, it is the pot-holed, poorly planned and badly maintained sewage slabs / manholes on roads, poor parking facility leading to occupying 3/4th of lane of a good broad road, lack of knowledge on DRIVING ETHICS which leads to congestion in any metro / city / town.

Once these are solved, it would be normalcy on roads. It has nothing to do with the no. of cars.

But the crooks running our country will never learn from mistake. All they know is to "unglify" each other and fill their pockets.[frustration]

On this note, i would like to quote the banner on Marine Drive which read as "Our politicians should learn from The Pope". !!!

A more appropriate word would be E-Tag, wherein it is fixed on the front windscreen, you recharge the same, every time you pass a toll, it gets scanned and money is deducted. In case there isn't sufficient balance, you get a message to your cell, asking to recharge the same.

This is what happens in UAE. [:)]

Ohh that's cool, but a bit sophisticated for Indian scenario.
There were lot of speculations on how to reduce congestion at DND and Gurgaon toll, so I was just curios to know this method.
