Volvo S60 Cross Country: Overview and Design

You have seen crossover-hatchbacks and crossover-SUVs. Now meet the world’s first crossover sedan: The Volvo S60 Cross Country. A sedan that claims to put to shame even some of the premium SUVs. This car made its global debut during early 2015 and is newest offering from Volvo that knocked the Indian shores last month. It’s more than just a regular Volvo S60 on steroids though. Apart from a considerably increased ground clearance, S60 Cross Country comes with all-wheel-drive as a standard feature. At first look, it closely resembles to normal S60. Sleek design, tough build and premium paint finish unmistakably sets it apart amidst the crowd, which translates that head-turns are guaranteed.

Bold front fascia embraces a long hood with sharp creases, thus offering a respectable road presence. But what’s really different over its normal avatar is black honeycomb grille instead of chrome slits as well as a front skid guard. Side profile is equally pleasing and this is exactly where the crossover character emerges more prominently. Cross country comes with 65 mm taller ground clearance which flawlessly tackles the ‘off-road’ like situations that one frequently encounters on the Indian roads. Additionally, side scuff plates (optional on S60) and black ORVMs are some noticeable changes worth pointing out. Design cues such as a coupe like smooth and slanting roofline clearly makes S60 one of the most attractive sedans in its segment.

The S60 Cross Country sits on a set of wider 235/40 R18 Michelin tyres which provide a fantastic grip opposed to 215/50 R17 on the regular version. There’s also a sweet range of alloys to choose from. Equipped on our test car are the diamond cut Porlia alloy wheels. The rear design is largely unchanged and look-alike to pre-facelift model (2011). I personally find tail lamps design of the Volvo cars to be particularly eye-catching. Thanks to AWD badge and Cross Country marking embossed on the rear skid guard, it’s only at the back from where you can find specific distinctions.

Volvo S60 Cross County: Interiors, Features and Comfort

The Volvo S60 Cross Country’s interiors remain unchanged. There are three interior color options to choose from (except full-beige). From the moment you enter inside, you know it ain’t an ordinary sedan. Quality is top-notch and highly premium right from plastics to upholstery. There’s absolutely no cost-cutting. Plastic panels are well-built and feel good to touch. Ergonomically speaking, this Volvo scores full marks. Center console is tilted towards the driver and all controls are within easy reach. One might get inundated by looking at the number of buttons for the first time though simple observation assures it really isn’t that fussy. However, an issue that may bother you at occasions is dashboard reflection on the windscreen under direct sunlight.

Storage spaces include dual front cup holders, armrest cubbyhole, front door pockets and a reasonably large glovebox. Fully-digital instrument cluster is very sporty too. Swedes claim that they were inspired by high-performance motorbikes when they came up with the idea of a single round instrument flanked by two smaller dials. It can be customized in three modes: Elegance, Economy and Performance (refer to MID tour video below for more). Then there’s a dash-mounted 7” screen with numerous options to configure your Volvo. It also includes technical data such as tyre pressure monitoring system etc. Other standard features on offer are Sensus navigation system which worked pretty accurate (though setting destination was a chore). Reverse parking camera with steering guidance can be engaged on demand at low speeds through a button on center console.

Three spoke steering wheel feels chunky to hold and is a delight to use. Front bucket seats are extremely well-bolstered to keep you in control during tight cornering. Thanks to raised height, view of on-road is commanding as well. Outside rear view mirrors offer a decent view but same isn’t the case with the inside rear view mirror, especially if rear seat is fully occupied. When there’s no one at the back, you can simply flip the two headrests by touch of a button. Even though S60 Cross Country stands tall, ingress and egress is a fairly convenient affair. The rear bench is best for two adults with a kid in middle. Huge transmission tunnel doesn’t help either. There’s adequate under thigh support and legroom but slanting roofline costs some of that headroom. And oh, yes the rear seat is 60:40 split.

Volvo S60 Cross Country: Performance, Braking, Ride and Handling

Unlike the regular S60 which comes in both, Petrol and Diesel variants, the S60 Cross Country is available only with D4 engine option at present. It’s a 5-cylinder, 2400 CC turbocharged diesel unit with a tweaked power output. It churns out 190 BHP @ 4000 RPM while maximum torque of 420 Nm can be tapped between 1500 – 3000 RPM. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with an all-wheel drive unit. Having a kerb weight of 2230 Kgs means the power-to-weight ratio amounts to 85 BHP per metric ton. This motor meets Euro-6 emission standards. The engine, obviously, is very refined and allows 0 – 100 Kmph in about 8.4 seconds.

Push the engine start button and you’ll admit, the car is somewhat noisy at lower RPMs. But engage the throttle and it gracefully moves forward. Overall, noise vibration and harshness levels are superbly well-concealed when it comes to high speed driving. The six-speed auto ‘box is responsive but if you’re in mood to take up this task yourself, simply switch to ‘S’ mode to use paddle shifters instead and S60 will continue to maintain its poise. Speed-sensitive steering wheel is also a joy to operate when using either in traffic or tight cornering. This car accelerates pretty quickly and remains extremely stable at high speeds.

There’s a noticeable surge past 2500 RPM mark upon sudden acceleration and that’s when you can also hear an enhanced engine note. It goes on till 5000 RPM mark before the transmission upshifts. The S60 Cross Country does 100 Kmph @ 4000 RPM in 3rd gear while the same figure is achieved @ 2200 RPM in 5th gear. On the other hand, the car cruises sedately in 6th gear, doing 85 Kmph @ 1500 RPM. Increased ground clearance means the ride quality indeed takes a toll. In short, the suspension is evidently stiff. Although minor potholes are digested neatly but be totally prepared to expect a few bumps every now and then. Upside is that you need not worry about taking the Volvo S60 Cross Country off-road. Yup, off-road. Where premium luxury sedans shy, this one cunningly makes its own way.

All-wheel drive is a standard feature on the S60 Cross Country but note that it sends power to rear wheels only in case traction is lost, otherwise it powers the front wheels. Body roll is well-controlled which indicates that maneuvering is still fun. All four disc brakes, equipped with EBD and ABS, are quick to respond too. Our test car left us impressed on the fuel efficiency aspect as well. The ARAI-claimed figure for Indian spec model is 16.3 Kmpl. Volvo brand is synonymous to safest cars on planet and while you’re sitting in one, you can be rest assured that you’re in the lap of safety. As a matter of fact, they're already working to make crash-proof cars by 2020. Front, side and curtain airbags, whiplash protection, dynamic stability control etc are just a few names among plethora of safety features available.

Volvo S60 Cross Country: Pictorial Review

Strong road presence. Typical Volvo styling.

Additional wheel arch cladding on the Cross Country. Notice the neatly slanting coupe-like rear roofline.

Taillamps similar to pre-facelift model. Looks beautiful when lit.

S60 Cross Country gets honey comb grille instead of chrome-slit type on regular S60.

Body panels are built to last. Long hood with sharp creases appears macho.

Headlamps very effective even at low beam. DRLs placed separately on the bumper.

Auto-wipers perform their job well. VIN location on windscreen similar to most European cars.

Total three washer jets with two nozzles on each.

The rear windscreen is large but view hindered by three headrests (although two can be auto-flip by tap of a button).

Volvo S60 Cross Country: Pictorial Review

Sleek outside mirrors offers a decent view. Painted black on S60 Cross Country.

Sunroof adds to the roominess in the cabin.

All you need is the keyfob in your pocket to open the door.

Alloys look catchy. Cross Country runs on grippy Michelins.

XL-sized windows are a boon to eliminate sensation of claustrophobia.

The talking point of Volvo S60 Cross Country: 201 mm ground clearance.

Incredibly helpful reverse parking camera can be separately turned on at low speeds if required.

Distinctive Cross Country marking embossed on the rear skid guard.

Volvo S60 Cross Country: Pictorial Review

All four doors open comfortably wide.

Highly premium cabin with well-bolstered bucket seats.

The rear seats are quite comfortable but apparently not as spacious as full-sized D-segment cars.

Chunky leather wrapped steering wheel and the entire dashboard exudes terrific quality.

Sporty instrument cluster is fully digital. It has three modes to offer: Elegance, Eco, Performance.

Engine start-stop button looks ordinary. Can go unnoticed at first sight.

Headlamps and wiper stalk.

Steering mounted controls.

Center console is tilted towards the driver. All controls are within easy reach but don't get inundated by plethora of buttons.

7” screen in middle of dash has numerous configuration options. GPS works pretty accurate.

Full sized remote control provided for those who prefer to be chauffeur driven.

Paddle shifts.

Automatic gearbox is quick. Want to drive manually? Switch to ‘S’ mode and use Paddle Shifts shown above.

Your left foot has no business here. Great advantage in bumper to bumper traffic.

Volvo S60 Cross Country: Pictorial Review

Sitting in Volvo means you’re in a lap of safety. Front, side and curtain airbags are standard.

Parking brake button. Push to engage and pull to disengage.

Hood unlock lever. Probably the only lever you'll find in the car. Very inconvenient if there's no one sitting on the left.

Stylish frameless inside rear view mirror also tells the direction you’re heading towards. Observe N (North) mark on right.

The interiors are very well-lit.

Sunroof beading peeling off on our test car. Not expected from a Volvo.

Sunglass holder on driver's side.

Lockable glovebox is sufficiently wide and deep.

Front cupholders neatly cover up with a flap when not in use.

Front armrest storage compartment features iPod charger and Aux port.

Wow!!![clap] What a superb review. Vibhor, Long awaited review buddy. Superb attention to details and brilliant photography. Volvo cars are known to be sturdy and even though they aren't as glamorous as the other counterparts but in many ways Volvo is ahead of the popular brands in India. Thanks for putting up such a detailed review.

Now that is a great review, unlike the plethora of first drives that are floating on the forum. Great pictures and write up! The forum needs more reviews like these Vibhor.

Coming to the car, it is an absolute stunner. I saw a Polestar Blue S60 the other day and this color is nothing less. Mind blowing car now with a good GC to clear anything this country can offer.
