Volvo car faculty located at Narsapura - Bangalore is expected to give Volvo the advantage of the Ennore port, situated off Chennai. Narsapura is about 325 kilometers away from the Ennore port, from where Volvo currently imports its luxury cars through the completely built unit (CBU) route.

CKD assembly will allow Volvo to save on the steep import duties levied on CBU automobile imports by the Indian government. The lower import duties will lead to more affordable Volvo luxury cars, and in turn higher sales numbers.

Volvo finished last year with sales of 936 cars in India and the car maker has ambitious plans to grow this number more than ten fold, to 10,000 units a year by 2018. The ten fold increase in sales will require more than just CKD assembly. Volvo will also have to expand its dealership and after sales reach to a level comparable to that of the Teuton trio.

Volvo Considering Local Production In India, Decision By Year End

The Indian luxury vehicle market is growing leaps and bounds every year and we’ve said this a lot of times. While the German trio, i.e. Mercedes, Audi and BMW are fighting it out aggressively, Jaguar too is trying to march ahead. Volvo is another company that resides in this segment but the Swedish company has had a not-so-satisfactory innings in India. Volvo has sold only CBU vehicles in India and despite them being very capable, the company hasn’t really managed to make a mark in any segment. The automaker is now looking to begin local production at various locations across the world and India too features in this list.

Volvo is studying the feasibility of commencing production in India. The company spoke to various other manufacturers like Mahindra, General Motors and Hindustan Motors about using their existing production facilities to assemble Volvo vehicles here. While Mahindra and General Motors refused to comment, Hindustan Motors ruled out any such possibility. The decision whether local production will actually be implemented or not will be taken by the end of this year itself. Local production also means that customers could get cost benefits which is quite a good thing.

Currently, Volvo sells the V40 Cross Country, S60 and S80 sedans and XC60 and XC90 SUVs in India, all of which are brought down via the fully imported route. The company revealed the all-new XC90 recently and it is a big step ahead of the present generation model and a proper rival to other competing brands. The new XC90 will turn around Volvo’s fortunes while the automaker also gears up for the launch of the new S60 T6 sedan. Volvo sold 1200 units in India last year and is aiming to sell 2000 units this year. By 2020, the company wants to sell 10,000 units and acquire at least 10% market share in the sub-continent.

Volvo India has begun taking bookings for the second-gen XC90 SUV. The booking amount is Rs 5 lakh which is non-refundable. Volvo dealers are expecting deliveries to begin by August this year. The carmaker will showcase the new SUV in India for the first time next week and will also conduct a special customer preview. The new Volvo XC90 will be displayed in Volvo showrooms across India by July 2015.

The all-new XC90 SUV will be sold in two trims in the Indian market, the feature-loaded Momentum and the higher-end Inscription. The top-spec Inscription variant will hit showrooms first.

The Momentum trim will offer features such as keyless entry and go, panoramic sunroof, electrically operated tail-gate, electrically adjustable driver seat with memory function, power-folding third row backrests, rain sensing wipers, LED headlamps, Park Assist, Hill Descent Control and a 12.3-inch screen in place of the earlier instrument cluster.

The top-spec Inscription trim will get added features such as a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins music system, air suspension, heads-up display, heated and ventilated front seats and a Nappa leather interior with wood trim.

The new XC90 will only be available with a 225bhp, 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder diesel for both the Momentum and Inscription trims. A petrol engine likely to make its way under the hood by early 2016, and the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain is expected to follow soon.
